Dear DRSGers and colleagues,
You might be interested in attending this workshop sponsored by the DRSG "Approaching Adversity: What's Adverse? What's Not? Why You Should  Care" which will be given on Sunday, December 3, 8:30 am-5 pm in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis in Baltimore.   You do not have to attend the SRA meeting to register for the course. There is a discount for early registration by Saturday, Nov. 4.  You may find more information and register at www.sra.org.

As regulatory frameworks increasingly seek a general way to approach toxicological issues in addition to cancer, the importance of determining appropriate "adverse effect" in toxicological assessment has been on the rise.  In this full-day course, participants will gain an understanding of the general legal background that gives weight to adverse effects, a discussion of the ethical values associated with adverse effects, an economic perspective on adversity, and the differences among regulatory agency approaches to determining what is considered an adverse effect. Several case studies will be presented, including determination of adverse effects from exposure to lead, perchlorate, fluoride and acrylamide. Speakers include Jonathan Wiener (Duke Univ. School of Law), Gary Foureman (EPA), John Doull (Univ. of Kansas Mrd. Ctr,) Rick Belzer (Regulatory Checkbook) and Heather Douglas (Univ. of TN). Co-chairs/speakers are Sara Henry (FDA) and James Wilson (Resources for the Future, retired).
