regulatory frameworks increasingly seek a general way to approach toxicological
issues in addition to cancer, the importance of determining appropriate "adverse
effect" in toxicological assessment has been on the rise. In this
full-day course, participants will gain an understanding of the general legal
background that gives weight to adverse effects, a discussion of the ethical
values associated with adverse effects, an economic perspective on adversity,
and the differences among regulatory agency approaches to determining what is
considered an adverse effect. Several case studies will be presented, including
determination of adverse effects from exposure to lead, perchlorate, fluoride
and acrylamide. Speakers include Jonathan Wiener (Duke Univ. School of Law),
