I will happily test any theories you have, but my initial gut-feeling
is that no, this probably wouldn't. When the problem occurred on my
slower computer two years ago, I noticed that the error message would
appear after the coarse image had painted, while the computer was
doing its resampling calculations to figure out what to draw on top
of it. Besides that, I've also noticed that the problem doesn't
occur if I turn off the resampling option altogether. Consequently,
it seems to me that the error is in those resampling calculations,
and would occur whether or not the coarse image gets drawn first.
