I realize that this is a continuation of a very old thread -- last
seen Dec 1st, 2004, in fact -- but I bought myself a new computer
this week, and I'm seeing this problem routinely and regularly on
the new one once again.
As I reported at the time, I had this problem on a desktop I owned
back then, but not on the laptop I owned at the same time. Well,
since then that desktop died a tragic death, and for a long time --
until this week -- all I used was that laptop, so I didn't encounter
this problem and in fact pretty much forgot about it. But now it's
back.
I'm not actually urgently pleading for you to do something about
this right away, but I did want to at least mention that it's
happening to me again. (Better to say something, just for the
record, than to suffer in silence, I suppose.) I'm happy to do
whatever I can to help resolve the issue, but if you decide that
it's a low priority (if I'm the only person on the planet who is
seeing it, for example), I won't argue ... too much.

My apologies Jeff. That was a temporary licence code - I've just e-mailed

Yahoo! Groups will be continuing our database maintenance on Monday night,
January 9, at 9:00 pm Pacific Time (5:00 am on the 10th (GMT)). For
approximately 30 minutes, the Groups site will be down for all groups. In

Brian,
I don't think the present version of the program will do this. If you
want to check for duplicates in \images\ then it needs to be \images\ on
both disk drives.
[Not a serious suggestion] You could create a \images\ folder on F: and
move all your files there temporarily <G>. As you would only be moving
directories it shouldn't take long..... And there's Edit, Undo to move
them back!

How do I get FindDuplicates to search for duplicates within the
contents of E:\Images\ together with the contents of F:\ ?
I am finding that if I try to select both the E: and the F: drives in
the "What to search for" box, and then put "\images,\" into the "In:"
box, FindDuplicates tries to blend "\images" and "\" together and
turns them both into "\" -- but on the E: drive, I really don't want
FindDuplicates to look in E:\ -- I only want it to look in E:\Images\
and below.
I am also finding that I can't put the drive letters directly into
the "In:" box because "e:\images,f:\" gets converted
into "\e:\images\,\f:\", which is also not what I want.
How should I approach this problem?

Okay, now I see your point too. I hadn't really noticed before now
that Word does both. That's a good point, and now that I see that,
I'm content leaving it as is too.
So, I've reviewed the beta version, and I'm very happy with it. Thank
you again for making those changes, and for making them so promptly.
I recommend letting that beta become official whenever you're ready to
send it out.

Ummmm ... I think I may have been misunderstood, or I may have
misspoken. Let me try again.
I don't want you to change File Exit. I'm talking about File
Close. I've said nothing about File Exit, and I do want that to
remain where it is, because, as you say, it's very clear and very
common.
As you know, your File menu includes BOTH an Exit item AND a Close
item. I'm not making any comment about the Exit item, which is
good, happy, serene, and tranquil where it sits. I'm commenting on
the Close menu item, and only that.
I'm suggesting that the CLOSE menu item (not the EXIT menu item)
might be more accurate if it read CLEAR instead of CLOSE. That
solves two related ambiguities: (1) You won't have both a Close and
an Exit menu item on the same File menu (which can be confusing
since, as you know, Windows sometimes uses File Close to shut down a
window application (e.g. File Explorer, Internet Explorer), and
sometimes uses File Exit to mean the exact same thing (e.g.
Microsoft Word)) and (2) what you really mean by "Close" is NOT the
same thing that File Explorer means by "Close"; what you really mean
is "clear the contents of this window", not "shut this window
down". I suggest that, thanks to both File Explorer and Internet
Explorer, most people think of File Close as a way to shut down an
entire window, when you only mean for it to clear out the contents
of that window.

Thank you, David, for such a quick response! This does indeed
address my concerns, with one small remaining item.
I actually didn't know that the left mouse button could drag images
from one position to another. I don't know how I missed that. It
makes so much sense now that I see it! It just wasn't something that
I was aware of, and so I misunderstood, thinking that the left mouse
button was going completely unused. Now that I see what it's for,
it makes sense, and I'm happy leaving it as is.
But:
Now that I see that I can move slides with the mouse, I also see
that the status bar area is putting text there when I do ("Move
slide: 8 to: 16"). However, that text, and the "16 slides" text,
are both remaining even after I do a File Close, and I think those
text areas should get cleared at that point. Otherwise, when I drop
new files onto SlideShow after clearing out the old set of files, I
still see "Move slide: 8 to: 16" there, even though the new set of
files might only include 4 slides! (It's also a little disorienting
to leave the "16 slides" text there after a close, because there are
obviously not 16 slides in that case -- there are zero!) I think
that once a user does a Close, if you could clear out both of those
status bar text areas, that would do it.
Changing the subject (and this suggestion is just a half-baked one,
and is just occurring to me just now): Do you think the "Close" menu
item should read "Clear" instead of "Close"? Generally, when a File
menu includes a "Close" option, as in the case of Windows File
Explorer (explorer.exe), that menu item shuts down the whole window,
rather than just clearing the contents of the window as is the case
here. Just an oddball thought, but it might make the meaning of
File Close more clear (pardon the pun).

Brian,
Many thanks for your careful observations and suggestions. There is a
beta-test version available at:
http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/software/beta.htm
which fixes your reported bugs 1, 2 and 3. Bug 3 really refers to the
fact that although the program is a Slide Show program, it has a number of
different functions such as the slide sorter, test card, and slide show
itself. I've renamed the sorter function to be "Slide Show Sorter".
Of course, the left mouse button is used to select the slide for
drag-and-drop altering of the display order, and the right-button to
select other functions. I agree there isn't a "left-click" action, but
for now I hope the "right-click" action offers enough choices.
Cheers,
David

Using SlideShow.exe version 2.2.6.64, 2005 Jan 28:
Bug #1:
If I start SlideShow, and drag-and-drop files onto it, the status
bar shows the number of images on the window (e.g. "8 slides").
If I save this to an SSH file (e.g. "Images.ssh"), then close
SlideShow and then reload it by clicking on that SSH file from File
Explorer, all eight slides are loaded, but the status area doesn't
read "8 slides" until I resize the window. Unless I resize the
window, that area that ordinarily reads "8 slides" is just blank.
Once I resize, then it displays the slide count.
Bug #2:
If I load "Images.ssh", the title bar reads "Slide Sorter -
Images.ssh". Now, from the File menu, select Close. All images are
removed from the window, but the title bar doesn't change. Now drag-
and-drop more files onto the window. The title bar still doesn't
change. Now save those new files by selecting "Save" from the File
menu. SlideShow prompts for a new file name, correctly (in my
opinion) reasoning that since the slides have been cleared out and
repopulated, you probably don't still want to be saving them
to "Images.ssh". But if that's the case, shouldn't "Images.ssh" get
removed from the title bar at some point along the way (probably,
I'm guessing, at the point where you do a File | Close).
Bug #3:
I never quite know whether to call this program "SlideShow"
or "Slide Sorter" because of the fact that the executable is called
SlideShow, but the title bar reads "Slide Sorter". Considering that
http://www.david-taylor.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/software/imaging.html
refers to it as "Slide Show", probably the title bar should too.
Enhancement request:
It would be nice if left-clicking on an image would do something.
My preference would be for it to do a Full Screen View of the
image. I understand that there are a number of potential choices
for what the left-click might do. Perhaps this could be
configurable? That way left-click could mean "Full Screen View" for
me but "Start Slideshow from here" or "Properties" or what have you
for someone else. In any case, it would be nice if the left mouse
button did SOMEthing.
These are all very minor and low priority, and certainly nothing
I can't live with. However, if any of these can get added to your
to-do list, that'd be great.
Thanks,
Brian

How much trouble is it to omit scrollbars when ImageViewer is used to
display non-JPEG images (e.g. *.BMP images)?
Right now, scrollbars appear for those image types in all cases, even
if the image is small enough that it doesn't need them, and I have no
way to change that.

I got it, I've tested it, and I love it!! It solves all of the
major concerns that I had had with image positioning, and I'm very
pleased.
My only other comments are minor ones, and if you don't implement
them, I won't object. I think that what I'm testing now is a great
enhancement. But let me throw a couple of ideas on the table for
consideration:
1) I have an image which is 800 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high.
On my 1024x768 display, right-clicking it gives me a scrollbar on
the side so that I can see all 1200 pixels of the height. That's
great, I love that. But the scrollbar across the bottom seems
unnecessary, since the image -- even when enlarged -- isn't wider
than my display. The image is 800 pixels wide, and my screen is
1024 pixels wide. Can we do without that horizontal scrollbar in
that case?
2) Similarly, what do you think of the idea of not adding scrollbars
at all if you know that the image already fits on the screen? Given
an image which is, let's say, 640x480 on my 1024x768 display, it
strikes me as necessary for scrollbars to appear even if I right
click on that image. I can imagine that either approach might seem
confusing to users, since they may be saying, "Hey, I right-clicked
and nothing happened" or they may be saying, "Hey, I right-clicked
and got these scrollbars, but why did I need them when the image
already fits here?" I'm not sure what the right usability answer
is, but my (very slight) preference would be to omit the scrollbars
in that case.

Using the newly released (28 Feb 2005) Image Viewer, and with a Windows task bar
which is not auto-hidden and appears along the bottom of my display (as opposed
to, say, the left side or the top of the display), and with a monitor that is
configured at 1024x768 resolution, I am noticing the following anomaly:
If I right click on a JPEG image in the Image Viewer to enlarge the image, ...
then ...
... if doing so results in an image which would be wider than my desktop -- in
other words, if the actual size of the image is wider than 1024 pixels -- then
the Image Viewer's enlarged window appears over the top of the task bar.
Otherwise, if the actual size of the image is narrower than 1024 pixels, then
right-clicking on the image in Image Viewer results in an Image Viewer window
which appears underneath the task bar.

I finally figured out my problem. My Sony TV will only display jpg
images created a certain way. For example, in Photoshop 7.0, if I use
"Fille/Save As..." to create a jpg file it won't display on my Sony
TV. If I use "File/Save for Web...", it works fine. I had similar
results with other image editing software.

Rob,
I'm delighted to have your report, and to have my software in use for your
International Space Station project. Yes, a registration would be
appreciated in the future. If there are any additions you need to the
program I would be interested to hear about them.
By the way I have two groups for my software, and discussion about by
radio and satellite-tracking software is best carried out here:

While writing, may I wish all group members a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year!
