Summary of Meeting

We do not have a set agenda, but in addition to the routine procedural items for the year, last year’s business meeting included these major issues:

  • Identifying presentation topics that would be of mutual interest to the maximum number of members in order to promote better attendance and less attrition.
  • Discussing/selecting some topics for meetings that would focus on specific group interests rather than individual topics, with the idea of having members volunteer to lead such meetings, with a reasonable amount of preparatory research.

DelVal HFES meetings are open to members and non-members alike. We are eager to have new people participate in our meetings to broaden and liven discussions. Please let us know if you are changing your email address so that we can keep our list current. If you would like more information about the meeting before attending, please contact:

About the topic:

Information visualization has been defined as “the use of computer-supported, interactive, visual representations of abstract data to amplify cognition” (Card, Mackinlay, & Shneiderman).  With the power of today’s desktop machines, complex and highly interactive visualizations have become readily available to everyone, even in a browser-based world.  Through selected examples, this discussion will explore the challenges such visualizations pose for both users and developers.  Come to share your own experience with visualization technology, or just to learn about recent trends.

Guest facilitator:  James Stokes

Mr. Stokes is a human-computer interaction specialist at CHI Systems and has worked with a number of different systems; both developing and evaluating visualizations.  He is currently working on map-, time-, and network-based visualizations for analysis in command and control contexts.

About the topic:

With increased availability of high-speed internet connectivity and powerful supporting infrastructure, web-based computing continues to grow in new and interesting directions.  One such direction is a new generation of tools for “knowledge-based work” that bring the large-scale communication, processing and information storage capacities of the internet to bear on personal-scale activities of creating, applying, improving, and sharing knowledge.  In an informal 'focus-group'-like format, you will learn about and be able to offer critical feedback on one such tool currently under development.  This tool is intended to assist in the personal act of idea creation by leveraging implicit and explicit communal knowledge through a structured ideation process and supporting graphical user interface.  Human factors issues to be discussed may include:  models of cognitive processes and creativity, user interface design, knowledge management, group work support, privacy and intellectual property, applications and limits of intelligent agents, among many others.

About the Presenter:

Fred Reed, is the Chief Technology Officer of As It Is, Inc. of Amherst NY.  He has over 25 yrs of experience in designing and building interactive computer systems for various Department of Defense and commercial users.
