Hey Liz, I'll go with you, tag along just to help verify that the plant you're
documenting for the group isn't the same as the type I photographed for my
flickr photostream.  We wouldn't want you to have wasted your trip down to
Mexico, for it to be unproductive now would we. Yep, I'd better go with you!

My neighbor knows I've been shooting flowers, and he's been telling to to PH this plant.  I think he called it a Yaka plant, comes from the desert someplace? ...

It is called the Yucca, it grows in New Mexico (I think it is the state plant) and probably elsewhere in the southwest. They can grow to be VERY tall,...

Yes, Be careful... it's like that blowfish... eat the wrong part, and you'll have a bad day... I don't know anyone in the state that ever ate Yucca... Prickly...

The century plant is usually called an Agave, not a Yucca. The yuccas comprise the genus Yucca of 40-50 species of perennials, shrubs, and trees in the agave...

I have several photos of both agave and yucca Dan. The yuccas are really beautiful when they are blooming all over the mountains on the other side of the pass....
