I spoke with Mentor on these 2 issues, and they've
confirmed them both. SP2 changes the version of ODBC
used making older versions of DxDatabook incompatible
with the newer dbc file. So, back up your dbc file
before upgrading if you are interested in running
parallel tool versions.

Cheers

xref questions:

1.) what is the switch and where does it go to get the xrefs to give
page number only (no / sector) I thought this went in the xref.cfg
file, but I have the xref.cfg file from an old design that xref'd as
desired and I don't see this in it.

2.) Is there a way to setup the xrefer up front to only show the value
and not attribute name xref= ?? Otherwise have to go thru all pages
and turn off name visibility.

Thanks in advance!

Ah yes, now I remember.....

Previously I had set up a 'custom' command line for xref as follows
under the tools menu:

/k xref.bat $BLOCKNAME -alltypes -page -condense –connected

Thanks,
John

Dear All,

I creat a new schematic, load a transistor from DxDatabook, when I "Creat
RefDes", Error 7618 appears, I also place other parts by this way, but they are
no problem. As the error message describes, it's because of inconsistencies
between DxDesigner and PDB parts, I had checked the parts in PDB and Dxdatabook,
they are exact match. Since the parts in dxdesigner is loaded from PDB, why
still there is error between them? Urgently, How to solve this problem?

Any input will be great appreciated!

Best Regards,
Luo.

Message: Inconsistencies found between DxDesigner and PDB parts.

Cause: Mismatching of Symbols, pins, pinswaps, slot or package types.

Solution: Resolve differences between DxDesigner and PDB parts.

Hey everyone. Sorry for reposting this, but there weren't
many takers last time. Anyone know how to force DxD to
accept new ref des base names? For instance, say a symbol
is "LK1" and I change that to "JP1" after it's placed in the
schematic. When I run a netlist again, DxD is forcing it
back to the original "LK1".

I'm using:

Have you tried adding the "PKG_LOCK" attribute to the component?  It tells the netlister to leave the part alone when it assigns REFDES and packages.

Subject: [DxDesigner_Users] PCB Error 7618

Ok, I tried that. From the Help file, I wasn't sure what the value
was supposed to be. If I understand it right, it needs to be "yes"?

After running the Create PCB Netlist, I see that the Ref Des's stay
correct. But when I run the Forward to PCB in DxD Link, that's when
the Ref Des gets reset, regardless of the PKG_LOCK attribute.

Dear Vern,

I edited expedition.cfg as your advice, But still failed to do Forward
Annotation, shown error message as below. Looks like because of a symbol
TRAN_NPN, this symbol just contains 3 pins, B,E,C, pin number is B,E,C too. I
also checked the pin mapping information in PDB, (cell pin number is 1,2,3), B
connect ro 1, E to 2, C to 3, WHY pin B not in PDB?

Luo,

Make sure these lines in your expedition.cfg file are as shown. These errors are
a reported SR on the Mentor Website (SR #: 278977101).

CHKBRD _PDB_ILL_PINSWAP WRN 0 | Illegal pin swap with Central Library PDB
CHKBRD _PDB_PIN_MAP ERR 0 | Illegal pin mappins with Central Library PDB CHKBRD
_PDB_PARTS_LOC_PDB WRN 0 | Unmatched part definitions in Local PDB

This will help you get a netlist out.

Is there a way to run SQL queries against a DxDb database (MS Access)
from a ViewDraw script?

Here's what I've tried:

Dim DxDb
Dim SQLString
DxDb = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
DxDb.Open "DxDb" ' DxDb is setup as an ODBC user source.
SQLString = "SELECT * FROM Master_Parts_List WHERE P/D_NUM = 020-000374"
set rs = DxDb.Execute(SQLString)

Upon running the script I get a message that DxDb is not an object,
which I think means that CreateObject failed to create the
ADODB.Connection instance.

I think in ordinary VB program ADODB library needs to be linked into
the project. Does an equivalent step have to be done in the script
somehow in order for CreateObject to know what ADODB.Connection is?

If this is not even the right approach, is there another way to query
DxDb library for a given part number?

Thanks,
Victor

Set objConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

Here's the exact error reported by ViewDraw:

Source:'Microsoft VBScript runtime error'

It's as if

and rebooted, so the ActiveX control should be installed on this
computer just fine.

BTW, I've tested CreateObject with other COM

Is there a way to run SQL queries against a DxDb database (MS Access)
from a ViewDraw script?

Here's what I've tried:

Dim DxDb
Dim SQLString
DxDb = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
DxDb.Open "DxDb"   ' DxDb is setup as an ODBC user source.
SQLString = "SELECT * FROM Master_Parts_List WHERE P/D_NUM = 020-000374"
set rs = DxDb.Execute(SQLString)

Upon running the script I get a message that DxDb is not an object,
which I think means that CreateObject failed to create the
ADODB.Connection instance.

I think in ordinary VB program ADODB library needs to be linked into
the project. Does an equivalent step have to be done in the script
somehow in order for CreateObject to know what ADODB.Connection is?

If this is not even the right approach, is there another way to query
DxDb library for a given part number?

Thanks,
Victor

I know it's rather obvious, but did you define the variable with a "Dim objConnection" ?

When I see that error, that's what I usually check for.

Here's a chunk of code that works as a script with Option Explicit enabled.

option explicit

Dim adOpenStatic
Dim adLockOptimistic
Dim adUseClient
Dim objConnection
Dim objRecordset
Dim SQLString

adOpenStatic = 3
adLockOptimistic = 3
adUseClient = 3

Set objConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Set objRecordset = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
objConnection.Open "DSN=DATABOOK-GOD-MODE;" 'Replace DATABOOK-GOD-MODE; with DxDb;

objRecordset.CursorLocation = adUseClient

SQLString = "SELECT DISTINCT [PART NUMBER], [DESCRIPTION] FROM [Capacitors] WHERE ([PART NUMBER]='04026D105KAT2A')"

objRecordset.Open SQLString, objConnection, _
    adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic

msgbox objrecordset.fields("DESCRIPTION")

Thanks for the suggestion, but I get the same error as with my code.
Here's the exact error reported by ViewDraw:

Source:'Microsoft VBScript runtime error'
Line: 238 Char:0
Error:0x800a01f4 'Variable is undefined: 'objConnection''

It's as if

Set objConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

doesn't create a valid object. I just installed ADO on this machine
and rebooted, so the ActiveX control should be installed on this
computer just fine.

BTW, I've tested CreateObject with other COM
objects--Excell.Application in particular--and it works fine.

Thanks for the help! This seems to work, though I am not sure why.

I think I was, in fact, missing a declaration of objConnection early on.

Thanks!

Not sure on this one without seeing the PDB, Cell and Sym.

Are you doing PDBs on the fly, or do you have PDBs ready made in a
database? This error tends to point at the PDB being mapped improperly -
I would start there.

Send me the sym, pdb and cell and I might be able to take a look at it.

Dear Vern,

I edited expedition.cfg as your advice, But still failed to do Forward
Annotation, shown error message as below. Looks like because of a symbol
TRAN_NPN, this symbol just contains 3 pins, B,E,C, pin number is B,E,C
too. I also checked the pin mapping information in PDB, (cell pin number
is 1,2,3), B connect ro 1, E to 2, C to 3, WHY pin B not in PDB?

Luo,

Make sure these lines in your expedition.cfg file are as shown. These
errors are a reported SR on the Mentor Website (SR #: 278977101).

CHKBRD _PDB_ILL_PINSWAP WRN 0 | Illegal pin swap with Central Library
PDB CHKBRD _PDB_PIN_MAP ERR 0 | Illegal pin mappins with Central
Library PDB CHKBRD _PDB_PARTS_LOC_PDB WRN 0 | Unmatched part

Here's another one to add to the list.

Text files (and ODBC in general) are no longer supported for Unix (and
I assume Linux) in the 2005 release. I love how they can decide to
just drop a feature, when I'm paying maintenance for "improvements".

The DxDatabook documentation repeatedly points out features that are
no longer supported in the Unix version. But they don't tell you what
IS supported in Unix. Hey, thanks for the help...

And why add a Linux version, but then drop a feature that might be
used by this version?

Also, on a PC, function key F6 no longer centers the schematic at the
cursor. As a workaround, you can use the Insert key. HOW is it
possible to screw up this most basic feature that has existed for years?

Considering the other issues identified so far, I would highly
recommend users let Mentor know this release is crap and that they're
not going to migrate to it.

Just when you thought things might be getting better...

Have users run into any other issues besides those identified so far
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DxDesigner_Users/message/4558) ?

Note: we use only the PC version - some of these issues have been
previously reported here.

F5 (view refresh) does not work - cannot be mapped to any other
command
Workaround: Use the End key or the menu selection View-
>Refresh
F6 (pan) does not work - cannot be mapped to any other command
Workaround: Use the Insert key or even better use the mouse
wheel and shift mouse wheel Initiating Project Navigator Contents
window results in error message,
"License request for dxdatamanager feature failed."
Workaround: Just click OK. If you leave the contents
window activated when you close DxDesigner, it will not report the
license request error next time you start the application.
Attribute Editor - highlight on active component remains when AE is
closed.
Workaround: bring up AE again and close it
EDIF output results in no values visible.
Workaround: use fixEDIF.exe (a compiled Perl script to
modify the output before sending it to InterComm.
Icons for DxDesigner and HyperLynx are missing when switching from
2005PADS to 2005IND
Workaround: drag shortcuts from .\bin folder
There is no KeyUp event in the .emf forms to implement user
pressing "enter" in txtbox
Workaround: Press a command key instead
The partlist output file extension does not match the setting for
output_format in the ini file
Workaround: Just click on the desired output BOM type - the
output file extension will change
The spacebar sometimes does not bring up the command dialog
Workaround: Click the menu selection View->Command Line
Generate command does not generate a symbol
Workaround: UNcheck "Open Symbol in DxDesigner"
Generate command overwrites existing symbol when working
w/heirarchical project
Workaround: take care to name the symbol something
different if you wish to preserve an existing symbol. This problem
happens even though the user does NOT have "Override Existing Symbo,
if any" checked. There is no warning message. The symbol is simply
replaced by the generated symbol
If the user has an environment variable that is defined as the path
to any library e.g. VLLIB_DIR
defined as v:\wvlibs2\ and then opens another user's project
from Dashboard, that project's
viewdraw.ini library will be immediately modified to remove
the hard path (v:\wvlibs2\) and
replace it with a soft path ($VLLIB_DIR). If a subsequent
user of the project attempts to
open the design and does not have VLLIB_DIR in their
environment, that user sees a string
of error messages complaining about being unable to find
symbols.

defined as paths to libraries--- In

If you believe that the product you received significantly differs from what
the documentation says, I would suggest invoking this clause in their user
agreement:

"5. LIMITED WARRANTY.
5.1 Mentor Graphics warrants that during the warranty period Software, when
properly installed, will substantially
conform to the functional specifications set forth in the applicable user
manual. Mentor Graphics does not warrant
that Software will meet your requirements or that operation of Software will
be uninterrupted or error free. The
warranty period is 90 days starting on the 15th day after delivery or upon
installation, whichever first occurs. You
must notify Mentor Graphics in writing of any nonconformity within the
warranty period."

The weasel word is "substantially". What is substantial to you and me may
not be substantial to them.

Regards,

Austin
