Hi,
I've just started using DxDesigner, and either it has a HUGE learning curve, or I'm an idiot. When I first started using Orcad Capture it was much more intuitive. I'm finding DxDesigner extremely frustrating. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, the first of many questions to come:
1) Where is the 'CL View tab' on my DxDatabooks window that they constantly talk about in the documenation? All I see is the Symbol View Tab.
2) I'm trying to create a part and trying to import the pins from a CSV file. For some reason, the Symbol Editor rejects any pins that have the same name. For example, GROUND or VCC. Does this mean that EVERY GROUND pin on an FPGA has to have a different name? I can't believe that.
I would use Explorer to place where you like the symbol libraries, and make back up copies.

Okay, I figured out that what happened was that I translated from Orcad to PADS Logic (not DxDesigner). It's VERY easy, once you know what to do (File/Import) . My face is red.
But I still don't know how to copy symbols to a local (or other) library other than through Windows Explorer. Maybe that's the way...

I think that you can try to set your sw exactly as I've
sent.
Then you use the "annotate selected" command to see what
happen,

Okay, I apparently DON'T have SE, since I get a licensing error when I try to run DxDatabook. And the location of that Central Library was obvious, it was only(haha) 9 layers down and mentioned nowhere in the docs.

On the subject of unique names, that's sort of true. Each pin has to have a unique pin label...but that label can be made invisible, and text can be used in place of the pin label. I do that, and it works great, providing you're careful, since the text is not attached to anything. I guess I could make a new pin attribute, make it visible, and use that instead...never thought of that before, as I've never had a problem.
What I do is name my "same name" pins, say a GND pin gets GND_B21 (for pin B21 of the BGA), and as I mentioned, make that pin label invisible, and make the text "GND" visible.
Also, make sure you set your PINTYPE attribute correctly if you expect to DRC the design.

Austin

Barry,
I can not talk to your first question. On the second yes every pin needs a unique name. I use commonname(pin#) ie GND1, VCC22. I also show all pins, you can use the SIGNAL attribute to "hide" pins, but I had a gotcha a couple of times.
Keep asking questions they help everyone at one time or another.

For some reason, the Symbol Editor rejects any pins that have the same name.
For example, GROUND or VCC. Does this mean that EVERY GROUND pin on an FPGA has
to have a different name? I can't believe that.

Hi,
I've just started using DxDesigner, and either it has a HUGE learning curve, or
I'm an idiot. When I first started using Orcad Capture it was much more
intuitive. I'm finding DxDesigner extremely frustrating.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, the first of many questions to come:
1) Where is the 'CL View tab' on my DxDatabooks window that they constantly talk
about in the documenation? All I see is the Symbol View Tab.
2) I'm trying to create a part and trying to import the pins from a CSV file.
For some reason, the Symbol Editor rejects any pins that have the same name.
For example, GROUND or VCC. Does this mean that EVERY GROUND pin on an FPGA has
to have a different name? I can't believe that.
Thanks,
Barry
If possible please send me your design and we will take a look here at Mentor. I'm here at the moment with the IOD Engineering Manager. This could have been caused by having DxD schematics open with write access whilst exporting the Functional (top) level and PCB level schematics. This is an area we are looking at improving significantly in this concurrency area.
Thanks,

I hope someone on this group can help me.
I'm using I/O Designer to generate symbols for an FPGA in my DxDesigner project.
After trying to export schematics from IO Designer, I can no longer open the project in DxDesigner. There is a pop-up that says "Unable to open iCDB connection" and the output window says "Snapshot creation failed: Snapshot already exists".
This is now happening consistently, although it seemed to be pretty random at first.
At one point, I thought it might be related to the use of subversion, since some of the "files" files in the database directory structure had references to .svn directories, but that is looking more like a red herring.
If anyone has seen this and can give me a clue, I'd be very grateful. It has caused my work to come to an almost complete halt.
I hope someone on this group can help me.

At one point, I thought it might be related to the use of subversion, since some
of the "files" files in the database directory structure had references to .svn
directories, but that is looking more like a red herring.
If anyone has seen this and can give me a clue, I'd be very grateful. It has
caused my work to come to an almost complete halt.
Hi,
I'm using DxDesigner version 2005.1 and I'm not sure why this is happening but
when I pick multiple symbols that are identical and load them into dxdatabook
than choose a different component to load back on to the schematic the refdes
numbers disappear. Is there a cfg or ini file that I could edit to annotate the
symbols but leave the refdes alone? If I do a change component/replace I'm given
the option to Preserve the refdes value for a single component why wouldn't I be
given that option when I replace multiple components?
Thanks for any suggestions

Dxdatamanger is much more than a storage tool. It's a work group collaboration
tool, version tracking and how the share and control our schematics. It's a
major part of our flow just as much as Databook. If you just use the basic
functions, it is simple and easy to use. Mentor's plans to update it for the new
version is years away.

It can select from the start of line, delete lines, change text, and perform the action on multiple files in a batch mode.

Hi Guys,
Can anyone recommend a good windows program for doing a text search and replace on an entire directory of files? I'm looking for an easy program for doing search and replaces on Dx Symbol libraries.
I've tried the program Actual Search and Replace but it only does 60% of what I need.
Go find a copy of Ultra Edit. It's
a text editor where you can do a search and replace on an entire directory
of files.

I've had similar problems and enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP resolved it.

Hi Todd,
Check your licensing configuration, this is the most likely suspect.
Make sure the MGLS_LICENSE_FILE / LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variables point to an existing license file / license server.
Greetings everyone. Thanks for reading my post. I sure could use your help.
I work in the IT department of an avionics engineering and manufacturing firm.
Our avionics engineers use DxDesigner and DxDatabook. Recently we moved our data center offsite. Since that time all users of these tools (except one) cannot drag and drop symbols from DxDatabook into DxDesigner.
The one user who can is using Windows 2000 everyone else is using XP.
I'm thinking this is network latency. Is there a time-out interval that I can change that might fix this problem.
Anyone else ever had to deal with this issue.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Whatever you tell me I will relay to the users.
I myself don't use these tools. I write business related custom apps and also help users when the first tier help desk folks cannot figure out the problem themselves.
