Yet another scam has emerged that we should be aware of.
Somehow, somebody has figured out a way to sniff out email
addresses from within Yahoo.     You may receive an email
seeming to come from somebody claiming to share your interests,
and inviting you to join his "Grouply" group to see his profile,
etc., etc., etc.

To do so, you are required to reveal your Yahoo user ID and
password.

It is being seen by some as a form of identity theft.
certainly a very inappropriate front end.     To see a

My name is Channing I am a Female that has Autism the Aspergers form.
I have a major interest in All Kinds of Carillons both the
Traditional Cast Bell Carillon and the Non-Traditional Carillon
(Which would be the Electronic Carillon). My Favorite Electronic

I have a 1925 Baby grand with the Ampico Player that is working OK.
In the next year I am going to refinish the piano and rebuild the
player. At that time I would like to install a MIDI system so I
could play both Paper & E-Rolls if posible. If this is as much
enjoyment as I think it will be, I hope to restore more of these
pianos.

I have been producing MIDI files from Reproducing Piano Rolls for about 10
years. I now have a library of over 4000 titles.

I have just finished developing a shopping cart service from which CDs may be
purchased for use on the PianoDisc, Disklavier and PianoMation pianos. Either a
built in CD drive or external CD player may be used. MP3 files are also
available for those who wish to use an IPod or other MP3 player.

I am initially offering 27 stock CDs as well as the ability to order custom CDs
with selections of your choice. Audio (MP3 files) and MIDI samples are available
on the site for all titles. Ordering stock CDs is easy. Ordering custom CDs
requires reading the on site documentation.

reject E-mail with embedded links as spam.)

Feedback (comments, criticism, suggestions) is welcome. The many options
available make the site a little confusing. I am especially interested in

Greetings r_balonier,

please note that i am still supporting these systems to the fullest extent
possible. i have some spare parts and the various tools needed to support and
repair them but can not offer a warrantee for a 5 year old system. i would also
prefer to not make custom note maps because it has been years since I did this
and it will take a fair amount of time to remember how to do it. so it would be
best if the system were sold to someone who wants to use it with the piano type
for which is is currently configured. there are instructions on the system disc
explaining how to reconfigure the note map but it requires a serial port
connection.

if someone does buy it and needs to have it re-mapped, i will do it for a
reasonable fee for my time. if an extra valve is needed for an Ampico
installation, i can also provide one of those and can also pre-wire it for a
reasonable fee.

Thanks for the tip. I changed the setting to moderate new members
postings.

On another topic. I have one E-Roll Player customer who has
continually given me a difficult time. He complains about
documentation design etc. etc. Just recently he told me he is giving
me a hard time as a test, to see what I would do. He has problems with
every installation. Even though he has done several he never seems to
learn from past experience and insists on making "improvements" to
complicate matters.

I have not had serious problems with any other customers. I have
clarified a few issues and provided answers and any necessary support
to customers who have contacted me. Of course I can not know about
problems that have not been brought to my attention. I have received a
few suggestions regarding improvement to the installation manual and
have made changes prompted by those suggestions. I have also received
many compliments on the documentation and ease of installation of
these systems. Please understand that this is a company of one with a
limited market product. I can not hire a staff of technical writers to
perfect the manual.

Please write to the group regarding your experience with installing
the E-Roll Player. If you have written to me directly, I have your
letters in E-mail archives but it is difficult to separate out these
letters from the tens of thousands in my archive so please write to
the group.

It is not clear what you are trying to do. It might be best to call as
we could go back and forth over and over trying to figure it out. I
have many scripts that I have written for converting MIDI events. I
probably have what you need or can write it. I do not use CAL for a
variety of reasons. My scripts run in batch mode and are much more
powerful (when necessary) than CAL scripts. If Ron doesn't know how to
set up his own product, I doubt that I can help. I can provide or
write a script to modify the MIDI files to match your setup. 707 984
8356. Today would be a good day to call as I will be spending hours
sealing my deck and can talk on the phone while I do it.

Hi all,

Hello Spencer

My '2 penceworth' from the UK

3000 US does not sound like too much to me (even when I add on
import duty, taxes, shipping etc and it gets closer to 4500).
I will certainly be knocking on your door (metaphorically speaking)
in the future, simply a matter of time !

IMHO I believe there will always be a demand for such a product,
albeit a relatively small market. The combination of the old
technology with the new for the best of both worlds (and without
compromising the antique) is a great idea.  (I have a few old bikes
with modern electronic ignition tucked into the magneto - still look
ancient - but now run much better).

A key point to my mind is that the conversion (both pianos and
bikes) is reversible, i.e. none of the 'old' is irretrievably
modified.

Again IMHO - with the continuing 'nostalgia boom' (in the UK anyway)
its difficult to see pneumatic players falling out of favour
altogether.

Hi Spencer,

From my point of view the increase in price you are contemplating is still in
keeping with the value of the system.  I am still a strong advocate for the
retro-fitting of pnuematic reproducing pianos with e-valve systems in order to
get the maximum enjoyment from these beautiful older instruments.

Your system (in my opinion) is one of the best on the market, for its
compactness, ease of installation and reliability.

I suppose in the bigger picture the market for e-valve systems is somewhat
limited (relatively small number of pianos and only small number of the owners
of those pianos that want the system installed).  A more concentrated/intense
marketing scheme might allow you to penetrate the market deeper to make it
somewhat more advantageous for production.

As to your other questions, I just don't know.

$3000 (worthless US dollars) too much for an E-Roll Player? You could
buy a medium quality sofa for that much, charge a wide screen TV on
your credit card and forget about the reproducing piano.

Up on MMD, Bob Taylor and Robbie Rhodes have expressed some
concerns about midi files and eroll files.   It's a concern that
emerges often.

In an attempt to shed a little light on just what is the basic
difference between a midi type 1 file and an e-roll, I've put

TICKLING THE TECHNOLOGY

Electronics play key role in new piano development

More than 100 years after the player piano was invented, it has
moved into the wide world of computer technology. It is no
longer just the background element in spooky films or smoky
saloons. Instead of musical notes eerily wandering down a
desolate hallway, picture neon glowing piano keys playing along
to Nora Jones in high definition.

Computer-activated solenoids have replaced rolls of paper in the
latest models of player pianos. And most pianos can be
retrofitted to serve without the accompaniment of two hands.
Laptops and iPods can be hooked up to equipped pianos to play
songs that are stored in playlists. No lessons needed.

"I don't think people are aware what there is available in music
technology. It has not passed up music," said Diane Cordogan.
Diane and her brother, John, own Cordogan's Pianoland on Route
38 east of Kirk Road in Geneva.

Cordogan's recently hosted an afternoon featuring manufacturer
demonstrations on the latest in piano technology. Sales managers
from Yamaha, QRS and PianoDisc showcased their brand's newest
piano accessories to almost two-dozen in attendance.

The focus of the dealers' presentations was on the ability to
play compact discs or DVDs and have a piano play the music live.
Slender black boxes attach to the undersides of the player
pianos and act as media centers accepting discs as well as USB
storage drives and memory cards.

"You can listen to beautiful piano music. It is unique and
different," said Terry Dolan of QRS Music Technologies and Story
& Clark Pianos.

Pianomation is QRS' take on the player piano of today. As with
the other systems, it works using analog and digital technology
and can be upgraded to provide numerous additional features.

"The system is so universal you can adapt anything to the front
end," Dolan said.

Add PNOscan and music played from the piano is recorded onto a
compact flash card by way of optical sensors. A library of music
can be stored on the card, he said.

"It's really cutting edge," said John Sagissor of PianoDisc,
referring to their latest player system that enables an iPod to
dock on a piano. Once combined with the "smart" player system
called iQ, music can be played on a piano from MP3 players,
discs and iTunes. It also can be connected to audio recording
software.

"It is the bridge between piano and home entertainment system,"
he said about the imbedded iQ system, which sells for around
$7,000. But that is just a start at merging pianos with modern
tech gadgets. Drop $20K and the company will bring extreme
multimedia to the piano with Opus 7. A hidden system that offers
wireless control, Opus 7 boasts a multitude of possibilities
that can be directed by a touchpad or other web-enabled device.

An architect who attended the event said that homes could be pre-
wired before they are built to easily welcome "smart" pianos.

And once owners are inspired enough to actually learn to play
the piano, the Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV eases the learning
curve with SmartKey technology. Keys wiggle, fingers follow and
soon a piano virtuoso is born.

Young pianists in the making can gain note knowledge with
assistance from Old MacDonald's farm animals. Piano keys "bark"
and "cluck" when hit correctly while the song appears in its
animated form via DVD.

Ironically enough, the first Disklavier MX100 was sold in 1985
to a McDonald's Restaurant in Limon, Colo.

Yamaha also has introduced into its player piano the option of
connecting a video camcorder to jacks in the piano to create
videotaped performances. The same PianoSmart audio and video
synchronization makes it possible to give or receive piano
lessons from a remote location.

Mike Urguhart with Yamaha said people are "mesmerized by what it
can do. You can recreate moments...you can program it to wake
you up with its eleven channels of streaming radio."

Those looking for a player piano can plan on spending $10,000
and up, said Diane Cordogan. She said the market for them is
much more residential, but they are seeing a lot of music
schools too. "We do a lot of homes, but it is all avenues --
it's not limited," she said.

And if the game room budget allows, a martini bar piano that
lights up glasses, coasters and piano keys in a rainbow of
colors costs under $20,000.
