If you haven't already noticed, e-Drive mag has a brand new look!
Brilliant new issue, larger format, designed to fit the "industry" standard
size of components "trade" publications.
The contents of the October/November 2002 Issue is jam packed with the
latest specs on EV drives and motors, with dozens of articles and photos. A
nuts&volts amp head's paradise!
There's a story on the design of Brushless 'PAM' (permanent magnet axis flux
motor) opening new opportunities for Electric Motors... Another about
external pancake motors developed by Maxon.
On page 19 we discover that a company called Gravitron, Ltd. is doing with
electric boats what some companies have done with NEVs like the GEM and the
HX480... making "go carts on the water" called Aquakart and renting them out
at tourist resorts and theme parks! I'll report on this further for the ET
List... promise.
There's a ton of cool links and ads...
But best of all is this article:
Overcoming EMI (electromagnetic interference) Challenges in Electric Drive
by Josh Ley of UQM Technologies.
This story describes the protocol of UQM's new EMI reduction program for
military EVs & HEVs, a protocol which will certainly trickle down to
commercial applications, especially as we discover a new report by the
French government that reinforces the fear of electromagnetic health related
problems, especially with children and pregnant women. French insurance
companies will no longer cover homes, families or workers who come in close
proximity to cell phone towers.
This subject has been a concern of Electrifying Times ever since this
reporter was told by a designer of the EV1 drive-train that he would not
discuss the EM shielding technology used in the EV1 because it was
classified under the stealth program by DOE and Hughes. This reporter began
to question the brush-off claim that riding in EVs was EM safe under the
current guidelines. In otherwords the EV driving and owning public has a
right to know the facts!
How can we possibly improve on EM safety if the science and the research is
kept under wraps by an anointed few? Sounds like same'ol-same'ol to me. This
is in fact the "first" article of its kind I have "ever" read in an EV trade
publication.
ET has never been able to afford funding the necessary research. One of the
things ET wants to do at EVS-20 is test all EVs & HEVs with EM monitors, and
also try a number of cell phone brands to test for interference while
driving. This has never been done before, or if it has, this author is not
yet aware of any published consumer report.
My hat goes off to Josh Ley for breaking ground on this extremely important
and touchy topic.
If you're an industry professional, e-Drive will certainly snail you a
sample copy of this terrific issue. Subscriptions are free to trade. Just
