 I tried one, couldn't get it work, but then got too busy to mess with it. Seems like it would be an excellent source of raw audio. I did buy a batch a of new 1N34s for this type of project.

Interesting idea! A 1N5711 should be good through about 3.5 GHz. Not that the BNC connector used will allow much of that to come through. But I doubt if anyone...
