Hi All--
I have been on vacation in CO since the last week of June.
I deleted out 3 "new members" that have added themselves to our listserv
in July to send us spam and I've deleted their messages from our file
history.
Only listserv members can send emails through our listserv. We get
these problems b/c our listserv membership is "open" to anyone to
encourage new members to join us online.
OPTIONS:
1. Keep membership "open" as it is now. Continue to keep an eye on the
spam and have me delete out such spamming "new members" and their emails
as they pop-up.
2. Increase our membership to a "restricted" status. (This is the
middle level of membership security--between "open" and "closed" group
membership). This would require genuinely interested parties to request
membership through the website--the website would send their request to
me the moderator by email; the potential new member would have to wait
for me as listserv moderator to "approve" their membership request
before they could officially join and have access. The waiting period
would typically be a day or two maximum (except when I'm out of town
like the last few weeks). We only have about 30 legitimate EWB members,
so there isn't a rush of people joining this listserv. Thus, the
"restricted" status for membership may be a good option to help cut down
the spam. The system will also allow me to make one or more members an
"assistant moderator" who could help approve legitimate new members in a
timely fashion (volunteers?).
Let's have some discussion/votes as to which option our members would
like best.
Kiersten :)
