Date: Wednesday, September 9th
Time: 6:00pm
Place: CH2M HILL Tucson Office at 5151 E. Broadway Blvd., Suite 500 (across
street from Macaroni Grill)
Call Jennifer at 520-576-4694 if you have trouble with access.
We will use this meeting to discuss progress on individual action items and to
examine any tasks which we have struggled to complete so we can continue to
progress with our mission.
I will be contacting various team members regarding the webpage development,
airline contributions, marketing materials, and potential funding sources so
that I will be able to provide an update regarding these topics. I will also
share the chapter's current account status that I received from EWB-USA.
I have heard from a couple of people who are interested in joining the group and
I hope they can attend the meeting so that we get the opportunity to meet them.
I'll send out another reminder on Tuesday, September 8th. Regards – Jennifer
Dussor
We will meet at 5:00 in Room 214 of the old Engineering Building on
the UA campus on February 18. The students will meet at 6:00. We
will have an update on the Salamanca, Mexico project, and we'll have a
discussion about a potential new project to support a tilapia fish
farm in Ghana, Africa. The presentation on this project will be
during the student meeting, but we'll talk about how we might support
it. It's a project that is already moving forward sponsored by
another organization, but we'll look into ways EWB can support it as
an official project (either or both chapters).
The Salamanca team will meet separately, and they are looking for a
water resources/mechanical engineer and an electrical engineer
volunteer (see Kiersten's posting). Please help circulate this
request to help the team add these members.
The students are always looking for mentors, and they have a second
water project in Mali, Africa. We will summarize their activities too.
If the timing of these meetings isn't good for you, pleas try to come
when you can. You'll find each of the meetings to be interesting, I'm
sure.

Hi All--
I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Sandy, the newest member of our
EWB listserv. She is a "UA MS student in conservation biology with a
previous MEngineering degree" who also worked for IBM.
Sandy, I look forward to meeting you at future meetings!

Sorry
I haven't made many meetings but really, really swamped at work and can't
make many meetings after my ordinarily long days here.
Alex
and I are keepint EwoB at Raytheon together by what sometimes feels like
a thin thread -- Alex also as stretched as I am.
Best
that I can do is hold this fledgling club together. We do get folks
who are interested but no big donor types, it seems. So, just keeping
it together.

When respected, I can be an effective innovator & can contribute to

This is short notice, but we will try again to have a meeting on the
same night as the student chapter. That will be Monday, November 3,
at 5:30 pm in the usual place, Room 214 of the old engineering
building. The students meet at 6:30 and will have a talk by Tucson
based Watershed Management Group for those of you who wish to stay for
that. I went to the region workshop in Denver and came back with lots
of ideas. I'll share the pertinent point with you. Please try to
attend. No one showed up for the September meeting, and we have some
very significant things happening. I think we could have a long term
role to play in the Ghana project to achieve the sustainability
requirements. See you Monday.

Engineers Without Borders-Princeton University is looking to implement
a new project this summer on a water distribution system in
Huamanzaña, La Libertad, Peru. We have been working with this village
since the summer of 2005, completing projects dealing with a bathroom
system, a solar energy system, and improved cooking stoves. We are
planning an assessment trip for the last week of January (our
Intercession Break) to prepare for an implementation trip this summer
(most likely for the month of August). Our project is in its very
early stages, and we are currently in search of a mentor. We are
looking to have a formal selection process over the next few weeks,
accepting resumes and conducting interviews. The EWB-USA website lists
your chapter as having a water distribution project, and we would love
to have the guidance of someone with experience in this area. If there
is anyone in your chapter who may be interested in this project,
please give them my contact information. I would be more than happy to
provide more information or answer any questions you may have. Thank
you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

I think we can excuse ourselves for being a little late with the
election of officers since this is the first time it has arisen. I
have copied two sections of the bylaws, one stating the positions that
we "may" fill. The first four are a necessity. I think we can work a
ballot by email and accomplish the voting. We should shoot for
completing this in a couple of months with the new officers assuming
their positions at the first of the year. I would like to request a
volunteer to take nominations, including self nominations. As an
alternative, you can send the names to Anthony, our secretary.
Section 3. The Executive Committee, in which the governance of the
Chapter shall be vested, may consist of the following positions:
1. The President
2. The Vice President
3. The Secretary
4. The Treasurer
5. The Fundraising Chair
6. The Membership Coordinator
7. The Communications Officer
8. The Project Coordinator
9. The Programs Coordinator
10. The Past President of the Chapter (ex-officio)
Section 5. The term of office of the members of the Executive
Committee shall be one year. This term shall begin on the first day of
September and shall continue for the period above mentioned, or until
a successor is duly selected.
We can make this smooth and seamless.
Thanks,
Doug

Our first meeting following the summer hiatus will be on Tuesday,
September 16. Let's meet in the same place as before, room 214 of the
old Engineering Bldg. on the UA campus at 5:30 pm. We'll have an
update on the Salamanca project and talk about plans for the fall.
Fund raising is becoming important, so if you have ideas, let's
discuss them. We can also talk about future meeting times and
location. All new project ideas are welcome too.
Here's a repost as a reminder about tomorrow's meeting!
Thanks!

--------------------------
Both the Salamanca Team and the EWB_So AZ Prof chapter have met sporadically this summer with dwindling attendance; this "summer slowdown" has largely been due to vacation plans and other complications. The Salamanca Team met last night at CH2M Hill's office along with a few others for a mini-general chapter meeting and a little work on the Salamanca project.
The Salamanca Team would like to invite anyone interested in getting involved, to join us for our next meeting:
Thursday September 4th at 6pm
Offices of CH2M at 5151 E Broadway Blvd, Suite 500
(tall white tower across the street from Macaroni Grill)
Also, the Salamanca Team is interested in identifying alternate meeting locations with free wi-fi, (perhaps a coffeeshop or market?) -- preferably around the swan/ina or sunrise/campbell areas. This would allow us to occassionally have meetings at a location more convenient for members travelling from northern Tucson. If anyone is aware of such a venue, please let us know!
I checked with Carole Johns, the finance person at EWB-USA, about how
donation checks should be written. There is no difference between
individual or corporate donations unless the corporation has their own
guidelines. Checks should be made out to "EWB-USA". The memo line
must have the chapter, e.g., "U of AZ Chapter..." and it can have the
project, e.g., "...Salamanca Project", if that is the intent. If some
special breakdown of the funds is requested, e.g., 50% to the
Salamanca Project and 50% to the general chapter account, that should
be stated in a letter with the check. Of course the attached letter
can restate any of the above just for clarification, but having the
chapter on the memo line is much better than just having it in the
letter, because if there is a mix-up that information could be missed.

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
EWB_SouthernAZProfessionals group:
Welcome back from your summer activities. We have not yet set
the day of the week for our meetings. This poll will allow you
to give your preference. We do not yet know the day that the
students will meet, and that could be a factor. Please respond
to the poll, and we'll make an informed decision. Meeting times
will be 5:30 or 6:00 unless that does not work well for many of
you. Vote for the day or days that you prefer to meet.
o Monday
o Tuesday

Hi Everybody,
Hope you're having a great monsoon season!
Does anybody have a meeting date for August? For a general meeting
and/or Salamanca or Seri Indian projects, etc. If not do we want to
schedule one?
Just wanted to spark some conversation again. Look forward to hearing
from you!
Thanks,

Based on the recent discussion about reducing listserv spam, I have changed our listserv's membership to "restricted". Three easy and quick questions will help us determine the real potential members from the spammers.
I have also made Jennifer Dussor an assistant moderator to help keep up with "approving" via email any new members that may "apply". Please be patient with us both, as we continue to work through these changes for future potential members!
These changes only affect our main listserv, not the Conference Room where the Salamanca project is conducted.
At the end of this email I've included the wording of new website mainpage which you can also visit at:
"Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA) is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students."
This Yahoo Group is the communications hub and listserv of the Southern AZ Chapter of Engineers Without Borders. Please feel free to upload links, documents, etc to this site. Postings to this Yahoo Group will go out to all EWB--Southern AZ Professional Chapter (SAZPC) members.
To keep it organized, please START A NEW TOPIC whenever needed.
"Workroom" Yahoo Groups for project subcommittees may be formed in the future to assist communications about specific projects. (Links will be posted at this site)
NOTE: FOR FULL ACCESS TO ALL FEATURES, BE SURE TO "LOGIN" (UPPER LEFT CORNER)
------------------------- MEMBERSHIP:
TO BECOME A MEMBER, CLICK "Join Group" to request membership. To cut down on spam, we have chosen to have "restricted" membership.
First, make a YAHOO PROFILE--please consider listing your full name so other members can contact you about future projects.
Then, the website will send your membership request to the moderator by email. To EXPEDITE YOUR MEMBERSHIP APPROVAL, IN THE COMMENT BOX PLEASE BRIEFLY ANSWER the three questions below to help us verify your genuine interest in the Southern AZ Professional's Chapter of EWB.
1. How did you find out about our EWB chapter? 2. Describe your area of expertise or experience... 3. Do you live in Southern AZ? If so, which part?
After briefly answering these questions, please wait for the listserv moderator to "approve" your membership (typically a day or two).
I second the "restricted" status. I think having contact information on our local website is adequate...maybe not ideal, but if someone wants info or to be involved they are equally likely to email
or call. I really don't think we are missing out on prospective members or inquiries by limiting access to the yahoo site. Anyone have a good argument against resticting access? I'm not super tech savy so I might be missing something here.
I would be happy to accept a co-administrator responsibility if we go that route.
Welcom back from vacation Kiersten! - Jennifer

I think that the restricted membership option is better, since the work produced by accepting new members potentially could be less
than having to keep an eye on new spam coming which eventually could be overpopulated as soon as more “spamers” find we exist.

Hi All--
I have been on vacation in CO since the last week of June.
I deleted out 3 "new members" that have added themselves to our listserv
in July to send us spam and I've deleted their messages from our file
history.
Only listserv members can send emails through our listserv. We get
these problems b/c our listserv membership is "open" to anyone to
encourage new members to join us online.
OPTIONS:
1. Keep membership "open" as it is now. Continue to keep an eye on the
spam and have me delete out such spamming "new members" and their emails
as they pop-up.
2. Increase our membership to a "restricted" status. (This is the
middle level of membership security--between "open" and "closed" group
membership). This would require genuinely interested parties to request
membership through the website--the website would send their request to
me the moderator by email; the potential new member would have to wait
for me as listserv moderator to "approve" their membership request
before they could officially join and have access. The waiting period
would typically be a day or two maximum (except when I'm out of town
like the last few weeks). We only have about 30 legitimate EWB members,
so there isn't a rush of people joining this listserv. Thus, the
"restricted" status for membership may be a good option to help cut down
the spam. The system will also allow me to make one or more members an
"assistant moderator" who could help approve legitimate new members in a
timely fashion (volunteers?).
Let's have some discussion/votes as to which option our members would
like best.

For those of you following the progress of the water project by Ardys'
Rotary club for the Seri Indians, here's a note from Ardys:
WOW! I just got the word from Water Tec in Mexico -- and the chief
engineer -- that the SERI'S NOW HAVE WATER!!! The plant is up and
running and the water has been tested. The mayor of Hermosillo is
coming to inspect it on Thursday the 24th.
A long project has been accomplished thanks to all who helped along
the way and gave support. I can't believe it. Just a few more
details to tie up but the water is flowing. I am very elated............
More to come as I get news....................
ARDYS
EWB Members -
I have noticed some strange postings to our yahoo site and someone has
invited themselves to post links to the site. I think the only person
with administrative rights is on vacation, but when she returns we'll
work to increase the security of the website. In the mean time don't
feed the "monsters" by clicking on links or responding to emails that
look they are about anything other than EWB business. Have a good
holiday weekend - Jennifer
To
help you out on May 27, do allow yourself plenty of time to get set up.
The guests that day will ALL enter the plant site on the Hermans
Road entrance only. Coming in that way takes more time to eventually
find your way to Bldg 800.
I
recommend you look for a parking space in front of Bldg 807 which, I believe,
Doug is familiar with. I think Dave came in the Hermans Road entrance
last time and got a bit turned around.
Again,
if you have problems give me a call. Here, as you know, it is all
about security. And after 8am parking spaces are at a high premium!

I received word today that our application for a Rotary Matching Grant
was approved. This will support the EWB-UA project in Ghana with full
funding for the pretreatment filtration system. EWB and Rotary offer
a very good partnership for developing and financing projects. A
total of nearly $40,000 will be available for materials, heavy
equipment operations, and labor. You will certainly hear more about
this as we go forward and advertise our progress and results.
Hi All--
The strange message below is reportedly junk from some Biker Social
Network. I have not personally opened this link (which below I've
delibrately deleted half of so it won't work). I recommend you don't as
it is spam (at the best) or could be virus infected/porn (at the worst).
From time to time on "open" listserves like our EWB Professionals Group,
where anyone can join, things like this happen. I will delete the "new
member" associated with this message.
If such spam does become a problem, we can "close" this listserve so
that new members would need approval from the moderator--nothing more
than telling me who they are and why they want to join so I know they
are legitimate--to avoid spammers such as this. But that might
discourage people from joining our group.
So for now, since this is our first spam, we'll just keep an eye on it.
Do realize this is an open listserve and don't open anything
suspicious--just email me and I'll delete it.
Thanks!
Kiersten

P.S. Salamanca team--don't worry this is not coming from the secure
"conference room" but from the general listserve "foyer"

Still need to post the pictures of the homes. This is a very large
collection and therefore it is going to be posted later.
What my insights were on the trip:
===========================
In summary here, I think viable easy to implement projects for our
chapter are:
1. Helping the school with chairs and tables for the children possibly
using concrete to ensure the furniture does not wander.
2. Helping them with moving their fence back as the teacher requested
to enlarge their play area and updating or repairing their playground
equipment.
3. Providing the school with computer setup (case and computers) and
book area that can be locked up by the teacher and secured to the
structure so the case doesn't wander. Possibly also made from concrete
or block, steel doors, and a lock? Teacher also showed the two
computers - no monitors, broken.
<<<<<< For pictures of 1-3, see the School Pictures >>>>>>
4. Providing steel doors and bars for the windows for the visitor
center, one simple thing the chief mentioned to me and which, if we
hear and respond to that simple request, I believe would take us far
with the Seri tribe.
5. Providing finish plumbing, toilets, and construction improvement to
what appears to be preliminary beginnings of restrooms for the guests
they have who hunt and sail with the Seri around Tiburon island (what
seems a significant source of income for them), another simple project
the chief requested which again, I think if we hear and respond, will
take us far with the Seri. He said the guests are appalled by the lack
of facilities and this distressed him.
<<<<<< For pictures 4-5 see Visitors Center >>>>>>
6. Determining the status of electrical availability to individual
houses because it appeared connections were being made that had small,
lamp-like cords being run across the roadways which is unsafe and
inadequate for the community. Also, the school has antiquated setups
for electrical with exposed wiring in the classroom.
<<<<<< For pictures 6 see Utilities on Reservatin >>>>>>
7. Helping the smaller houses with cooling in the summer - ideas -
make a central court area that is well thought out to be cool so they
can escape the humidity and heat at least in a community area. They
seem to like socializing so this may work until the larger problem
with small buildings can be tackled. The school teacher also mentioned
this problem with respect to the children. Perhaps a misting system
and some kind of higher and big shade over the school or playground
would help?
<<<<<< For pictures on homes, will post soon! >>>>>>
8. Helping provide water to the school.
9. Doing something about the situation with trash. Not sure what the
solution to that would be.
<<<<<< For pictures 9, see Environmental (trash) problem >>>>>>
Sheila is uploading pictures that the team took during the recent
visit to the Seri Indians in Sonora. They will be added over a period
of a few days. Check photos on our site.
