Sheila is uploading pictures that the team took during the recent
visit to the Seri Indians in Sonora. They will be added over a period
of a few days. Check photos on our site.
Hi, this is Sheila. I am sorry about the delay getting these pictures
to all of you. I have posted part of the trip, regarding the elementary
school.
The Seri children and people in general are a very happy people. The
children bubble with happiness. Although these pictures imply poverty
in the traditional sense, they are in a rich area for fish, scallops,
crabs, and other sea food, on oceanfront property.
There are 88 children, 20 desks, a very old teachers desk, a very very
very old 5 drawer, and a playground that could use some help.
When asked the teacher requested the following 2 things:
#1> help moving the fence back further so the children have a bigger
play area
#2> he'd like the computers to be fixed
A problem is that scarcity in the reservation is great, so things that
are nice tend to grow legs and walk away. Which is not judged, it is
very understandable given that a desk may be the only furniture some of
the tribepeople have. You will see by future pictures how the situation
is.
One idea is to create concrete school benches and desks, and a concrete
or slump block work area with some kind of doors that can be opened and
closed and which can house school books and a computer work area.
Apparently wood and metal do not fare well there, it is very humid and
has a high salt content in the air. The reservation is right on the
ocean.
The electrical to the school could use upgrading and renovation for
safety. Additionally, it is very hot 4 months of the year, so hot that
the children are not able to sit in the classroom for instruction. An
idea would be to think of some way to shade the school, perhaps a shade
higher than the structure which would provide relief from the sun. It
is also extremely humid, so ideas for cooling the children without
adding more humidity so they can concentrate (it's 130 degrees during
those months) would help.
Please check back often, I will be posting different segments (or
potential projects) as I can.
Thanks, Sheila Cloudcroft
The UA student chapter has regrouped and will meet on Monday, March 3.
That would be a quick turn around for us, but I would like to get
back to that first Monday of the month schedule. Let's hold a meeting
on that same evening at 6:00. It's not a problem if this is too quick
for you, but if some of us could meet it will be worthwhile. I'd like
to discuss fund raising, and my high-priority task is the Rotary fund
raising effort to support the Ghana water project. We have some good
news on that front.
I have found a house I plan to rent, just need to know if any others
on the team plan to go and need accomodations. be nice to split rent.
A very nice 4br house, big, right on the beach. Plan to go 4/1, 4/2
and 4/3. Email me at az_smr@... if you want details.
Hi, I was wondering if each of you involved in the different projects
for EWB could take a few minutes to upload pictures from your various
experiences in the club. Please save them with descriptive names such
as how the Seri pictures were uploaded (in other words, Pic001 or
DSF00017 are not helpful when viewing the pictures). I am working on a
display case for R-Team EWB (your sub-family) and would like to show
what EWB projects are like. As many pictures as you have, the better!
I
caught something that we need to change. According to the Director
of the 70 R-TEAM clubs we CANNOT use words like "EwoB at Raytheon"
or "Raytheon EwoB". When he first corrected me on
that, I found it rather irritating.
The
R-TEAM folks make very, very clear distinctions and he was emphatic that
we cannot do that. It is one of the legalities of the R-TEAM constitution.
Has to do with liability issues and all of that.
He
told the story of an R-TEAM Scuba Club that had taken a trip to somewhere
in Mexico. On the way back, there was a car accident and I think 5 or 6
died in the crash. The article in the paper wrote about "a Raytheon
club" and that created some major liability issues for Raytheon
because it was an R-TEAM club, not Raytheon.
This
sticking point is something I find odd and I've had to change the way I
talk about EwoB. So, along with me . . . let's work on disengaging
the two terms "EwoB" and "Raytheon". We are The
R-TEAM EwoB.
The
odd thing about this is that "R-TEAM" stands for Raytheon Tucson
Employee Association Management . . . or something like that. We
brought that up at the mandatory meeting we attended and all he said was,
"Yeah, right, . . . but you are still not a Raytheon club". Odd.
I
asked him if we could use the Raytheon logo on our flyers announcing our
meetings and he said (again) am emphatic, "No".
We'll
have to keep that in mind for the display case.
Don't
these little details just get in the way of the real and important work?

I wanted to apologize for not attending today’s
meeting but I had to take care of a couple of things at the office.
On the other hand, as Anthony mentioned,
we attended Monday’s meeting and explained our actual status.
Also, I have retrieved some information
regarding the community, especially surrounding hydrological information as
well as some sociological information.
I’ll upload to the group site the
information I have so far.
Please let me know of the conclusions from
today’s meeting.

[EWB_SouthernAZProfessionals] Wed. meeting - out of town
Hello everyone,
Just letting you know I am out of town so I regretfully won't be able
to attend the meeting Wednesday. Allan and I (among others) were at the Monday
meeting and updated the group on the Salamanca
project. I hope the meeting goes well and I look forward to hearing/reading a
report afterward.

A status meeting will be held this Wednesday (2/20/08) evening from 6:00 until 7:30 pm.
The previous meeting location no longer exists as CH2M HILL has moved to
new office space. The new location will be on the Univ. of Arizona
medical school campus…hopefully a relatively central location to all
(with good parking and easy access).
A map that shows the meeting location and parking area is
attached. Please call me if you have any questions at 520-576-4694.
Our February Meeting will be on Monday, 18 Feb. at 6:00 pm. We'll
meet in the engineering building where we met before, Room 214. If
you need a map, please email me. Doug May
Hello All,
I have posted a file that describes a $50,000 opportunity for EWB and
a $1000 potential grant for the student chapter. I recommend we focus
on the student chapter because that would give us the best chance to
win the grant. I'm copying Dave Newman's message below since he
researched it.
Doug
If we each donate $10 to EWB-USA, and EWB-USA wins this challenge (see
the posted file), then EWB can make $50,000 in a challenge grant.
EWB-USA will then turn around and make that money available in $1000
project grants.
Better yet - you can direct your $10 donation to our project. That
way, the money is going to the project anyway! You can accomplish
that by writing "Mafi Zongo Water Project (EWB-UArizona)" in the
"Designation (Optional)" box that comes up.
Note: You have to create a username/password to complete the
donation. There is also a 47-cent fee to process the donation.
If you don't mind - forward it on to friends and family...
The last part is that if you do donate and get others to donate, keep
track of their name, etc. The $1000 grants will be awarded to the top
chapters in terms of number of donors they mobilize.
Regarding
the Seri Indian project and possible collaboration w/UC Santa Barbara --
let's also include Raytheon/EWB as well to see what type of contribution
we can make. I've discovered at Raytheon has another EWB chapter
in Santa Barbara. Synergism . . .
When
I find some time, I will give you a call to discuss your involvement in
our Feb 6 EWB mtg at RMS. I'll need some information to get you a visitor
pass but I need to coordinate with security at this end to find out exact
steps I must follow.
I
do believe the more we focus resources and/or interest that things that
we had not imagine CAN happen.
I
failed in my last two attempts to reach Cathy Leslie by phone. Just need
to sync the calls.

Our Salamanca team includes most of our members, and they are planning
to meet regularly. It would be quite understandable if some of them
would not have time to also attend our general meetings. With that in
mind, I think it would be good to stick with meeting the same night as
the students (but at 6:00) so we could coordinate and hopefully
maximize our effort while minimizing everyone's time. And with THAT
in mind, I've asked when the student chapter will meet next. I got
one response that it might be January 21, but that is MLK Day, and I
doubt they will meet then. Last semester they met on the first Monday
of the month. Let's plan on that for February, and I'll update you if
there is a change.
I have posted a diagram in an Excel file that I received from Water
Tec International, the company that is doing the work on the
desalination plant. Look at both sheets one and two. I find it
interesting that they will train the Seris in operating and
maintaining the equipment. We have an additional possibility for a
cooperative effort. The EWB chapter at UC Santa Barbara whose faculty
advisor is David Bothman, would like to help the Seris, and would like
to work with us. We'll set up a conference call to discuss this with
them. I think expanding our interests like this could be beneficial
in terms of getting additional ideas, fund raising help, and getting
involved with another chapter. Allan, I think the partnerships with
the U of Sonora could be a real plus too. This doesn't mean we have
to make the project really huge, but just to get some really good
effective help.
EWB-USA Limitations for the # of Active Projects per EWB Chapter:
The subject of the number of projects that an EWB chapter can have active at a time came up at our December meeting when we were discussing the advantages/disadvantages of the Raytheon chapter being a seperate group or a subgroup of the Professional chapter.
At that December meeting, I knew I had seen an active project/chapter limitation at the EWB-USA website somewhere, but couldn't remember exactly where. As I was reviewing the Salamanca MX documents after our meeting tonight, it jumped out at me--there is a 3 projects/EWB chapter limit listed in the "502 Form" Application to Acquire an EWB-USA Project(the form we fill out to "bid" on acquiring an open project).
Thus, as we discussed at the December meeting, since there is an EWB-USA limit on the number of open projects/chapter, it might be advantageous for the Raytheon group to be a separate chapter; then there could be 6 open projects to work on between the two groups rather than only 3, which may be more satisfying to the large/diverse number of engineers and professionals that are joining the two groups.
There certainly may be other compelling reasons to have the Raytheon group be a subgroup of the professional group. Nonetheless, since I did come across the project limitation guidelines, I wanted to pass such information along.
(Open the 502 form--the quote is 2/3 down the fist page and is also reprinted below)
Here is the quote from the 502 form entitled:
"CHAPTER APPLICATION TO ACQUIRE AN EWB-USA PROJECT
Eligibility Criteria:
3)Does your chapter currently have a project (circle)?____Yes____No
·If Yes, which projects (Country, region, type)?
(Note: In general, EWB-USA asks that chapters limit their number of projects to three for quality and funding reasons. Please contact the project managers with questions)"

Hello Everyone,
I just checked, and in our December meeting we said that we would meet
at Gentle Ben's on Jan 7th. I apologize for not following through on
this. However, the Salamanca project meeting is this evening, Jan 8th,
and that involves most of the chapter. I won't be able to attend, but I
received input from Marlene which is copied below. Please discuss our
next meeting of the entire chapter. We have substantial agenda items,
including the Seri Indians, and I think we should meet before the
Raytheon club meeting on Feb 6th. Jan 21 is MLK day. Jan 14th and 28th
are good possibilities. If you decide on one of these dates, I'll
follow through this time.
Cheers,
Doug
Happy New Year! There is a meeting tonight for the Salamanca Project
and am not able to make it. However, I would like to be a part of the
fundraising committee. I have been talking to my boss about the project
and finding funding for it, whether it be the company that I work for,
finding a pump company, etc. My boss is interested and is willing to
help me. Who is in charge of the fundraising? Do you have their
contact information so that I can hear about what happens tonight?
Thank you for your help.
