Hiya, Swappers!

This week's swaps are finally up here...
http://able2laugh.com/master/swap/index.htm

There's some new groups here this week...

C27

A33, A49, and A69-73

For those with adult swaps that don't want ads for smut groups sent to their
groups, be sure to look thru all of these and let me know which you need to
exclude for next week.

Have just gotten a report that 5 clean lists aren't sending out their verify
notes. Let's all play fair and GET those verifies out. If you get behind
and have to send some out the next week, that's OK...but DO get them all
out.

Have a great week!

Cheers!

Hi, Again!

something odd happened....I sent up this weeks swaps, and checked the link
last night. but some of you wrote that the old links were up. I checked,
and by gum, it was the old links. I have re-sent the correct links again,
tho I have no idea how the old one got back there.

Hiya, Swappers!

This weeks swaps are up and running here...

http://able2laugh.com/master/swap/index.htm

A few announcements for the week.

First off, there's a site for a program that gathers donations each year to
but plane tickets for overseas soldiers so that they may come home for the
holidays. This is a VERY reliable group, and have been bringing home troops
for 8 years now. If you could put a mention in any of your newsletter it
would be appreciated.

Let's Bring Em Home 2008
http://www.lbeh.org/

Next, since so may of you have Yahoogroups lists, I again strongly recommend
that these folks sign up for the Moderator Central group. You'll get those
updates directly from Yahoogroups on all the new stuff happening there.
It's only 4 or 5 mails a month, but it's mostly important stuff.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/moderatorcentral/

That's it for now.

To all concerned, y'all have a nice Thanksgiving.

Cheers!

hi, Swappers!

Sorry, but I have a bit of a personal problem which needs to be resolved
this week, and so I don't have time to do the swaps this week.
I'm not even publishing this next week.

Hopefully all will be straightened out in time for the week after's swaps.
I'll give you a heads up early if it doesn't look possible.

This will give you all a weeks breather from the swaps, and time for any who
may have fallen behind a bit to catch up. Perhaps it's a good time to get
with some groups outside the program and run a few swaps with them.

Cheers!

Hiya, Swappers!

Next week's swaps are now posted here:
http://able2laugh.com/master/swap/index.htm

WE have 2 new groups this week, A32, and C42 (this replaces the now defunct
Big Laughs at this number).

All of you that have YahooGroups SHOULD sign up with the Yahoo moderators
group. You'll get announcements directly from the Yahoo team as to changes
and such.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/moderatorcentral/

One thing that came through this week was an announcement about the
profiles.
-----------------
We heard that many of you have expressed a desire to check the complete
profile of a user prior to allowing them to join your
group. With the recent changes to profiles, many of you have been
unable to do this.

For the time being, you may verify a user's profile and account information
by going to:
http://manage.members.yahoo.com/YAHOOUSERID

Please replace "YAHOOUSERID" with the ID you wish to research. This
will pull up a profile page similar to the old profiles format.

This format/page will NOT be available for long and is a temporary
solution for many of you who need to review full profile information
to appropriately manage your groups, while

Please note that any changes you make to your own profile while logged
into this screen will not show up in your new profile.

At this time, the only way to reliably manage and edit your own
profile is to go through http://profiles.yahoo.com
--------------------

Just passing on the news.

Cheers!

Hiya Stan & Fogie! Good to see Both of U Again!
Just a few comments & I am outta here! lol.
I always send my verifys with one exception...if the owner is a member
of my group FUNNERS and we agree to not verify. I go the extra mile to
make sure my verifys are sent. Sometimes Yahoo skips Digests so then I
go to My Friend who always sends me a copy of the Ad I sent. In My
Graphics Group...I go to Sent Mail & send them that Copy whenever Yahoo
skips. It is just a habit I formed when Stan was doing the Ads. I have a
Lady that for years has sent me Thank You when I send her my
verification; but she has never sent me a verify where she run my ad in
her group. That is trivial to me. I trust her.
About the larger groups not wanting to run smaller groups ads...Can U
not remember when u were small & trying to build up your Membership? I
had a Member of Ad Swap dump FUNNERS from his ad swaps when he was doing
ads. I had 300 members at that time. He thought it was too small for his
Groups. Thank Goodness, Brown Sugar told me about Stan & I have been
here ever since. I am zooming in on 1000 now. Stan & Fogie have helped
me Big Time! So Ad Swapz does work if u do your Best. TY Papa for
sending "the rest of the story" about Mark. Huggs;

Dear, Swappers!

WHEW! What a response rate!

OK, I'm sorry, I DIDN'T really put that out so that everyone could pat me on
the back. I can do that fine enuf by myself...heh heh!

I am REALLY happy that a bunch of you folks are happy with the way I'm
running the swaps. And I THANK YOU one and all for your support.

The ACTUAL reason I put out the "timetable" of how many hours I spend is to
diss that mention in Mark's letter about "you just don't have a
clue... not only about how the swaps should be run...but also about your
actual importance in it."

My dear friend and mentor Jack Daniels told me to put that in...it's his
fault.

In fact, I wasn't going to push thru all those comments to the list....just
answer them offline. Seems good ol' Fogie decided to have some fun with the
list and sent them thru. I also got another big chunk of notes directly to
me that Fogie didn't send thru.

It WAS nice to hear from the Fogie-meister tho. Also Stan's input.

but as I mentioned in the original letter, the amount of letters to me about
the whole verification subject has DRAMATICALLY dropped to a drizzle since I
put in the Standardization of the way to do verifications. and MOST of you
have taken that to heart and do it correctly. when you run the ad for the
Eazy Ad Swap group I DO look at all the verifies that I receive to make sure
they are being done fairly correctly.

tho I don't check yet to see if they are all being SENT to me. sometime
after the US elections (I'm a poll official, and am too wrapped up to bother
before then) I'll be going thru all the old verifications I have (yes, I
keep them all) and see who's been naughty or nice. so after I get that all
sorted and crack a few more skulls, nicely of course, there should be even
less problems in that department.

what I'm MOSTLY finding right now is that if you don't get a verify, it's
USUALLY because that listmaster didn't get their issue out that week, or
have fallen a week or so behind in their swaps. It's a "Shit Happens"
thing, which could happen to anyone. Nothing to get hung about. this whole
TNT was is a REAL exception, because as far as I can tell everyone IS doing
the swaps and sending out their verifies. even with the TNT lists, 15 of
the 19 lists were being done correctly.

all of you deserve a thank you for making this all work. so here's a VERY
WELL DONE to you all for playing nicely!!

Once again, I appreciate the responses, and let's just let this whole thing
pass...like dust in the wind..............

Cheers!

Papa Thorn your doing great job with the swaps... it takes time
to "settle in" with a "new job"......to work out any "kinks" etc etc.
Anyone with half a brain, knows that... & should be patient & let you
work out any problems.... which from your mail...you did!!

Even though Bics Jokers Wild, does not swap with "ANY" lists that
promote porn, we did swap with other TNT lists.... We have 14 swaps a
week, posting at least 2 each day... & I do verify!!! but if I happen
to miss one, an email from the swapper or you, would be accepted
gracefully... none of us are perfect ;-)

I was sorry to see TNT leave, under the circumstance I read in your
mail ... guess the intent is lost, misunderstanding occur, when
trying to settle a problem using email..

I do thank you for sharing the "whole story" with us... I was
surprised Mark sent that email publicly..

Hiya, Kiddies!

Just wanted to give you folks a little taste of the stuff that goes on
BEHIND the scenes in getting you the swaps. This may sound like a bit of
personal "back patting", and perhaps it partly is. But it's mainly to give
you an idea of what kind of oddness it takes to get you the swaps every
week.

In an average week I spend...
5 hours doing the actual figuring out the ad swaps for the week, typing in
the swap info into the tables, and sending it up to the site.

2 hours updating the weekly ad copy sent in, adding new groups, doing fixes
of links, getting the new exclusions set up, noting who's on vacation for
that week, etc.

2 hours updating my database of "who swapped with who" so you hopefully
don't get the same ads over and over.

1 hour writing to the folks that send in the above, making sure the ad copy
is right, etc,

1 hour (in a normal week) chasing down complaints of "why didn't so-and-so
send me an ad swap verification", and trying to convince all to make sure
their verifications are standard so everyone can understand them. this has
greatly decreased since the time I put out the standardization of the
verifications. this usually also includes trying to calm down the original
complainer so they don't up and leave the program over a stupid ad
verification.

1/2 hour trolling thru many sources looking for and inviting new groups to
join up.

This all goes on behind the scenes, and you folks see it all as a single
post telling you that the swaps are ready, with an update of the new groups,
and perhaps a relevant news items I've stumbled across during the week.

That's a normal week. I do it gladly, because I really want everyone to get
more members...including myself.

But THIS week, it was decided by someone to go public with what normally
stays behind the scenes. And since it was done so venomously with no just
cause, I'm going to walk you through just one of the things I deal with.

========================
The TNT Playroomz debate
========================

A few weeks ago I received this from Mark of TNT Playroomz.

-----------------------
Hey Thorn,

Mark and Joan here.

A little number crunching has given us the idea that a majority of
the ad swap partners don't wish to swap with TNT Playroomz.
Although we make up 27.5% of all of the adult ads...since you have
taken over the program we have swapped 92% of the time with the
same group owner. We have taken turns telling each other that
maybe it will be different next week, but alas that has not come
to fruition. And, we're fairly sure that this list owners' subscribers
are just as tired of the same ads week after week as our subscribers
are. By ceasing our participitation we will be reaching almost the same
number of new eyes. We just don't see a benifit at this time.
We welcome a reply if you can offer any clarification.

Mark & Joan

TNT Playroomz
-----------------------------------
my reply
-----------------------------------
hiya!

well...THIS took me by surprise!

ok...some numbers here...

you have 19 groups you're promoting. last week we had 69 adult groups
swapping. so, you DO have a good chunk of the groups available.

MOST of the exclusions are your own lists. your smut lists are excluded by
couple that don't promote porn, yours or anyone else's, to their lists...
which is Wolf's Wallpapers and BICS Jokers Wild. I don't think anyone else
is excluded from your lists.

since I took over, these are who have swapped with each list. I'm just
giving the numbers

[here was a long list of all 19 of their groups with the numbers of each
groups swapped with for the last 12 weeks. almost all numbers were from the
below groups]

these are the lists who swap 7 ads a week
6, 11, 27, 34, 35, 37, 39, 40, 46, 47, 48, 50, 51, 52, 53,
74, 75, 77, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89

these swap 6 ads a week
8, 19, 56

so you see...what is happening is that I HAVE to cycle your ads through all
the lists that need 7 ads a week FIRST. I only have so many lists I can
swap ads with them for. and the 7 a week swappers are already on their
third and FOURTH time around swapping with some of the other lists.

so it's not that anyone else WON'T swap with you....but I HAVE to get
everyone rotated through all the other lists. since you only do one ad swap
per week with each of your lists, it takes about 10 MONTHS for each of your
lists to go through the entire rotation. whereas the lists swapping a lot
more can cycle thru the entire list in 3 months.

while the same swappers seem to be rotating through your lists, each is
promoting a DIFFERENT list each week...not the same list over and over as
you state. remember, another list takes 19 WEEKS to get through your entire
batch of lists. so you will see EACH list swapping with you for 19 weeks.

I will start rotating some of the other lists through yours. but then you
WILL be seeing EACH of them going through 19 weeks each also.
---------------------------

the next day I seriously looked at this all again, and went back to Fogie's
original instructions on how to set up the swaps. and there it was...in
black and white pixels...
---------------------------
Step 8:
I proceed in the same fashion w/ the "2-swap" groups, then the "3-swap"
groups and so on. The theory here is that if you do the lowest swaps first
then they will rotate through the entire list; if you start w/ the higher
swaps, then the groups that only do 1 or 2 a week will continuosly get the
same swaps and never get a chance to expose themselves to all of the groups.
---------------------------
yep, I had been doing it back-assward, starting with the "7-swap" groups
first. so I dumped the entire database I had been using and starteed fresh.
I wrote to Mark....
---------------------------
Dear Mark & Joan!

I'm sending this note to humbly APOLOGIZE for the last 12 weeks of swaps.
your note made me look at the entire way that the swaps were being
done....and I was doing it bass-akwards! I'd totally turned around the
instructions Fogie sent me when I first took over, which ended up placing
all the importance on the lists with the most amount of swaps each week.
instead I should have been running groups like yours thru the rotation
FIRST.

it has now been corrected, and won't happen again.

humbly...

Thorn in everyone's side
---------------------------
that week I wrote to all in the EAZY AD SWAPZ announcements....
---------------------------
I'm re-doing how I figure these out. Seems that old Fogie was a lot better
at this than I am...so I'm going back to the way he did it. Nothing changes
for the way you handle the swaps...so don't panic. But the distribution
will end up getting you a wider variety of lists you're swapping with...so
enjoy.
---------------------------
so, that was out of the way. then this week I get a note from another
ad-swapper, who will remain anonymous.
---------------------------
after being assigned to swap with basically the same nothing
group for the last 3 to 4 weeks, my conclusion is that I am
just giving away free advertising. a thought I find quite
repulsive. While I do not mind helping a small group once in
a while, I really find it distasteful when they didn't even
bother to run my add this last week. Sorry to do it, but I
am pulling out of ad swaps ...just is not worth the
aggravation.
----------------------------
a deep sigh to myself....another verification gone wrong. turns out it was
some of the TNT groups that were being swapped with. the 3 to 4 weeks he was
assigned different TNT groups, and the one that didn't send him a verify was
the TNT Playroomz Tiger Purrz list. but it started a research campaign for
me, and I checked out the past issues for ALL 19 of their groups. (that was
about 1 1/2 hours shot there). so I sent a note to the original person
explaining that each TNT group was different, then sent this off to Mark.
-----------------------------
hi, Mark!

got a complaint about not getting an ad swap back with Tiger Purrz from
someone, so I checked it out.

weird. it's a monthly mag (although it skipped September), yet only runs
two ads. that's 2 ads a month not run....and none of the Sept ones were run,

so I looked around, and most of your groups are running the ads just fine.
but there are a couple exceptions.

Playrooms is a bi-weekly ... running only one ad an issue.
(2 ads a month not run)

Naked Saturday is a bi-weekly...only running one ad an issue.
(2 ads a month not run)

the kind-of-weekly TV Bloopers hasn't had an issue since 27 Sept.
(3 recent ads not run)

at least now I understand how you have so MANY cool lists, yet only run one
ad each....some are only monthly or bi-weekly. of course you wouldn't want
to double up the amount of ads in those...it would be way too many per
issue.

please do get back on track with the above mags, tho. folks DO notice.

and PLEASE PLEASE get Tiger Purrz to run an issue with last weeks ad for
[name excluded] ...as well as make sure this weeks ad for him gets in your
next Noiz Playz. his panties are in a bunch now over this.

concerned,
Papa Thorn
------------------------
here's his reply
------------------------

Hey back Thorn...

I kinda' knew this would come up. If I can explain my problem I hope this is
just between you and me for the moment.

Tiger and I work independently on most of our lists. I do the following:

Cool Linkz
Playful Artz
Just Girlz
Tunez and Stuff
Nasty
NoizPlayz
Soup2Nutz
Manzine

And Tiger does these:

Trivia
Just Boyz
Xtasy
Recipeez
Fun & Gamez
TV Blooperz
This & That
Tiger Purrz

On the other 3...

Playroomz
Naked Saturday
Jokez and Toonz

....I do the first half and send it off to her to finish. and then she posts.

I am very diligent with the ad-swap program on the lists I do, and I'm sure
that if you'll compare with the above information you'll agree. But
I get many e-mail and messenger messages from Tiger informing me of various
problems that prevent her from posting on time. I continually expect that
they will be sent out late, but sometimes they are not. And
I'm not sure how to handle the problem.

I wish I could apologize to all the members about this, and now I know that
I have to take care of it.
I promise I will bring it up to her in earnest.
A partial solution will be that for the 3 lists that we share I will insert
the swaps myself before I send them off to her to finish.
And I will tactfully impress upon her the importance of sending out the
swaps regardless of her lists content.
I'm sorry that you have to deal with fallout from my problems...and I
promise you that I will take care of it.

Sincerely...and with apologies,

Mark
--------------------------------
so that was explained. and now Mark has finally had his wish granted to
apologize to you all that didn't get a swap back.

so I wrote him this back....
--------------------------------
my GAWD...such groveling! get up off the floor, man...quit kissing my
shoes! that's just demeaning!

Mark, I'm not one to get down heavy on anything. just wanted you to check
into it and see if you could patch it up. it sounds like your idea to put
the ads in yourself quite handles a good chunk of it.

I totally understand about working with a partner. things just never get
done right if you don't do them yourself.....but you haven't the time to do
EVERYTHING yourself.

do have a NICE chat with Tiger, and give her my love!

Cheers!
Papa Thorn
---------------------------
so, a nice friendly note back, starting with a bit of humor to lighten the
levity of the situation.

so, then I get the following...showing, to my surprise, that a listmaster
who puts out a humor list HAS no sense of humor.
---------------------------
Hey Thorn...

Everyone has an idiot moment every once in a while, but
you have once again proved to be an arrogant, pompous
son of a bitch. I gave you the first one, but your recent
pile of garbage has only confirmed my guess that you just
don't have a clue... not only about how the swaps should
be run...but also about your actual importance in it. You've
ruined what was once a great vehicle for list owners to
enhance their membership.

In a reply to an answer I wrote to you in all sincerity, you replied:

my GAWD...such groveling! get up off the floor, man...quit kissing my
shoes! that's just demeaning!

You must have SHIT dribbling out of your collar. I made three (3) attempts
to
either reply to a situation or point out to you a much needed correction.
You
finally heeded on the second count and started fairly distributing the
swaps.
After twelve (12) weeks of doling out the same swaps to the same groups you
suddenly had a revelation. C'mon...admit it. You screwed up, and instead of
sucking it up like a man you showed your weenie side. Yeah, it was all your
idea.
Take the credit and pretend you're something you're not.

What a JERK!!!

Well, your job just got a lot easier. TNT Playroomz and all of it's 19 lists
will no
longer be participating in Ad Swaps. If someone who really knows how to do
this properly takes over the Swaps we will gladly return to the program.

We consider this sufficient notice so as not to inconvienence the other
groups.

Until then, any list owners who wish to swap independently with TNT
Playroomz...Just drop us a line. You have our addy's.

Mark and Joan

TNT Playroomz
---------------------------
WELL.....first time reading through it I got a good laugh.

the second time through, I realized that he must have taken this PUBLIC, and
sent this out to other ad-swappers on the list. that was really sad, as now
I had to actually do something to clear up this distorted pile of drivel
with whoever received this. not having a clue WHO he sent it to, I had no
choice but to send it to you all in this format.

what i DID notice is that in this very public announcement of his, he gives
NO mention at all about some of his groups not running ads for other groups.

I haven't actually responded to Mark on this, since he considered his note
"sufficient notice" in itself. and, frankly, there was just no way to
respond to it sanely.

so, let it be publicly mentioned now that all TNT Playroomz ads are now
cancelled, and they are officially removed from the program.

as a reminder, Mark and Joan are still willing to swap with any of you
independently. just drop them a line...you have their address. but in case
you don't, here they are...

Oh, my!

Yeah, kids, I'm still here... just watching quietly on the
sidelines... until now.

I hoped EVERYONE understood there would be a few bumps in the road
during the transitional period; it was certainly no different when I
first took over from Stan. I think Thorn has done a dandy job and I
understand the trials and tribulations he faces.

I didn't intend to weigh in on this, but there are a couple of things
I did want to add to the conversation. .. nothing I haven't said a
gazillion times before, but apparently bear repeating.

And when the Thunder from Down Under jumped into the mix (hiya, Pip,
my brother) I felt compelled to say my peace 'cause you gotta do a lot
to get my man's dander up.

Verifications have ALWAYS been the biggest issue facing the swaps; and
unless you think the group moderator has time to require copies and
then wade through every verification, they ALWAYS will be.

Personally, I always assumed that most folks ran ads like they were
supposed to and the only reason I asked for verifications for myself
as long as I did was to check out other groups, their formats and
their content... never once checked to see what if any ads they ran.
Didn't know, didn't care... just assumed the best in people and slept
much better at night. Ignorance is indeed bliss.

That being said, other than fundamental fairness, why do most of you
even give a rat's ass? Unless your group/zine is FOR PROFIT, then you
have lost absolutely nothing when someone else either doesn't run or
verify your ad. Mine WAS for profit with a subscriber base well over
100k in its heyday and I still could find a few kb's of space to try
and help out a fellow group/zine. Surely none of you are so tight for
space that a couple of lines devoted to another group is gonna kill
you, even if it turns out to be a donation and not a swap.

My advice is now as it has always been -- try to let it go, and if you
can't then simply drop the other group owner a NICE note asking about
it. If that gets you nowhere, then ask Thorn to omit them from your
swaps in the future.

My friends, there is no reason to abuse Thorn or each other over
something so trivial as not getting an email from someone saying they
ran your ad. Think about it -- in the grand scheme of things is it
REALLY that big a deal. If it is, then I STRONGLY suggest you get
outta the group/zine game.

Now, you kids go play nice, eat your veggies, have a drink and send
your verifications.

And, as always, have a very LARGE day!

Fogie

The original idea of the swaps was to give every ezine a chance to run
their ad on a one for one exchange regardless of size, But... the lazy
ones that DON'T run the ads they are given and expect everyone else
to run theirs or the owners who refuse to send copies of the ads they
do run was and still is a constant problem that I grew tired of dealing
with. That's why I turned it over to Fogie.

I apologize if I stirred up some "Static" for you over my comments. I have been asked a couple different times to assume leadership of the group. And have steadfastly refused each time, knowing its a thankless job that results in very little for the time it requires
to invest. If I may, let me just point out a couple of problems that adswap has never fully
addressed. One of course, is the failure of so many groups to fullfill their obligations in actually running an ad. You are doing much better than fogie, because when he ran it,
my estimate is that at least 50 % of the time certain groups failed to run the ad as required. (most of them have left, I noticed)

The other problem which adswap fails to address and also the reason there are no large groups in it, it fails to address the size of the list. it gives a unilateral one on one swap with a list, regardless of whether it is 1500 or 15000 members. this just is NOT fair to the large group. And if you really want to attract the larger groups, you have to make the adjustment. in the mean time, small groups that go no where, like tnt, will never understand the concept.

For myself tho, it is simply easier instead of running an ad that is not going to gain me anything like TNT, and run a paying ad in its place like hydramedia where I will make 20 bux, makes more sense. Then I can use the 20 dollars to buy some legitimate advertising which will actually produce some results.

Hiya, Kiddies!
Just wanted to give you folks a little taste of the stuff that goes on BEHIND the scenes in getting you the swaps. This may sound like a bit of personal "back patting", and perhaps it partly is. But it's
mainly to give you an idea of what kind of oddness it takes to get you the swaps every week.
In an average week I spend...
5 hours doing the actual figuring out the ad swaps for the week, typing in the swap info into the tables, and sending it up to the site.
2 hours updating the weekly ad copy sent in, adding new groups, doing fixes of links, getting the new exclusions set up, noting who's on vacation for that week, etc.
2 hours updating my database of "who swapped with who" so you
hopefully don't get the same ads over and over.
1 hour writing to the folks that send in the above, making sure the ad copy is right, etc,
1 hour (in a normal week) chasing down complaints of "why didn't
so-and-so send me an ad swap verification", and trying to convince all to make sure their verifications are standard so everyone can understand them. this has greatly decreased since the time I put out the standardization of the verifications. this usually also includes trying to calm down the original complainer so they don't up and leave the program over a stupid ad verification.
1/2 hour trolling thru many sources looking for and inviting new groups to join up.
This all goes on behind the scenes, and you folks see it all as a single post telling you that the swaps are ready, with an update of the new groups, and perhaps a relevant news items I've stumbled across during the week.
That's a normal week. I do it gladly, because I really want everyone to
get more members...including myself.
But THIS week, it was decided by someone to go public with what normally stays behind the scenes. And since it was done so venomously with no just cause, I'm going to walk you through just one of the things I deal with.
========================
The TNT Playroomz debate
========================
-----------------------------------
my reply
-----------------------------------
hiya!
well...THIS took me by surprise!
ok...some numbers here...
you have 19 groups you're promoting. last week we had 69 adult groups swapping. so, you DO have a good chunk of the groups available.
MOST of the exclusions are your own lists. your smut lists are excluded by
couple that don't promote porn, yours or anyone else's, to their
lists...
which is Wolf's Wallpapers and BICS Jokers Wild. I don't think anyone
else
is excluded from your lists.
since I took over, these are who have swapped with each list. I'm just
giving the numbers
[here was a long list of all 19 of their groups with the numbers of each groups swapped with for the last 12 weeks. almost all numbers were from the below groups]
these are the lists who swap 7 ads a week
---------------------------
the next day I seriously looked at this all again, and went back to Fogie's
original instructions on how to set up the swaps. and there it was...in black and white pixels...
---------------------------
Step 8:
I proceed in the same fashion w/ the "2-swap" groups, then the
"3-swap" groups and so on. The theory here is that if you do the lowest swaps first then they will rotate through the entire list; if you start w/ the higher swaps, then the groups that only do 1 or 2 a week will continuosly get the same swaps and never get a chance to expose themselves to all of the groups.
---------------------------
yep, I had been doing it back-assward, starting with the "7-swap"
groups first. so I dumped the entire database I had been using and starteed fresh.
I wrote to Mark....
---------------------------
Dear Mark & Joan!
I'm sending this note to humbly APOLOGIZE for the last 12 weeks of swaps. your note made me look at the entire way that the swaps were being done....and I was doing it bass-akwards! I'd totally turned around the instructions Fogie sent me when I first took over, which ended up placing all the importance on the lists with the most amount of swaps each week. instead I should have been running groups like yours thru the rotation FIRST.
it has now been corrected, and won't happen again.
humbly...
Thorn in everyone's side
---------------------------
that week I wrote to all in the EAZY AD SWAPZ announcements....
---------------------------
I'm re-doing how I figure these out. Seems that old Fogie was a lot better
at this than I am...so I'm going back to the way he did it. Nothing
changes
for the way you handle the swaps...so don't panic. But the distribution
will end up getting you a wider variety of lists you're swapping with...so
enjoy.
---------------------------
so, that was out of the way. then this week I get a note from another ad-swapper, who will remain anonymous.
----------------------------
a deep sigh to myself....another verification gone wrong. turns out it was some of the TNT groups that were being swapped with. the 3 to 4 weeks he was assigned different TNT groups, and the one that didn't send him a verify
was the TNT Playroomz Tiger Purrz list. but it started a research campaign for me, and I checked out the past issues for ALL 19 of their groups. (that was about 1 1/2 hours shot there). so I sent a note to the original person explaining that each TNT group was different, then sent this off to Mark.
-----------------------------
hi, Mark!
got a complaint about not getting an ad swap back with Tiger Purrz from
someone, so I checked it out.
weird. it's a monthly mag (although it skipped September), yet only runs
two ads. that's 2 ads a month not run....and none of the Sept ones were
run,
so I looked around, and most of your groups are running the ads just fine.
but there are a couple exceptions.
If I can explain my problem I hope this
is just between you and me for the moment.
Tiger and I work independently on most of our lists. I do the following:
Cool Linkz
Playful Artz
Just Girlz
Tunez and Stuff
Nasty
NoizPlayz
Soup2Nutz
Manzine
And Tiger does these:
Trivia
Just Boyz
Xtasy
Recipeez
Fun & Gamez
TV Blooperz
This & That
Tiger Purrz
On the other 3...
Playroomz
Naked Saturday
Jokez and Toonz
...I do the first half and send it off to her to finish. and then she posts.
I am very diligent with the ad-swap program on the lists I do, and I'm sure
that if you'll compare with the above information you'll agree. But
I get many e-mail and messenger messages from Tiger informing me of various problems that prevent her from posting on time. I continually expect that they will be sent out late, but sometimes they are not. And
I'm not sure how to handle the problem.
I wish I could apologize to all the members about this, and now I know that I have to take care of it.
I promise I will bring it up to her in earnest.
A partial solution will be that for the 3 lists that we share I will insert the swaps myself before I send them off to her to finish.
And I will tactfully impress upon her the importance of sending out the swaps regardless of her lists content.
I'm sorry that you have to deal with fallout from my problems...and I promise you that I will take care of it.
Sincerely...and with apologies,
Mark
--------------------------------
so that was explained. and now Mark has finally had his wish granted to apologize to you all that didn't get a swap back.
so I wrote him this back....
--------------------------------
my GAWD...such groveling! get up off the floor, man...quit kissing my
shoes! that's just demeaning!
Mark, I'm not one to get down heavy on anything. just wanted you to check
into it and see if you could patch it up. it sounds like your idea to put
the ads in yourself quite handles a good chunk of it.
I totally understand about working with a partner. things just never get
done right if you don't do them yourself.....but you haven't the time
to do
EVERYTHING yourself.
do have a NICE chat with Tiger, and give her my love!
Cheers!
Papa Thorn
---------------------------
so, a nice friendly note back, starting with a bit of humor to lighten the levity of the situation.
so, then I get the following...showing, to my surprise, that a listmaster who puts out a humor list HAS no sense of humor.
In a reply to an answer I wrote to you in all sincerity, you replied:
my GAWD...such groveling! get up off the floor, man...quit kissing my shoes! that's just demeaning!
You must have SHIT dribbling out of your collar. I made three (3) attempts to
either reply to a situation or point out to you a much needed correction. You
finally heeded on the second count and started fairly distributing the swaps.
After twelve (12) weeks of doling out the same swaps to the same groups you
suddenly had a revelation. C'mon...admit it. You screwed up, and instead of
sucking it up like a man you showed your weenie side. Yeah, it was all your idea.
Take the credit and pretend you're something you're not.
What a JERK!!!
Well, your job just got a lot easier. TNT Playroomz and all of it's 19
lists will no
longer be participating in Ad Swaps. If someone who really knows how to do
this properly takes over the Swaps we will gladly return to the program.
We consider this sufficient notice so as not to inconvienence the other groups.
Until then, any list owners who wish to swap independently with TNT Playroomz...Just drop us a line. You have our addy's.
Mark and Joan
TNT Playroomz
---------------------------
WELL.....first time reading through it I got a good laugh.
the second time through, I realized that he must have taken this PUBLIC, and sent this out to other ad-swappers on the list. that was really sad, as now I had to actually do something to clear up this distorted pile of drivel with whoever received this. not having a clue WHO he sent it to, I had no choice but to send it to you all in this format.
what i DID notice is that in this very public announcement of his, he gives NO mention at all about some of his groups not running ads for other groups.
I haven't actually responded to Mark on this, since he considered his note "sufficient notice" in itself. and, frankly, there was just no way
to respond to it sanely.
so, let it be publicly mentioned now that all TNT Playroomz ads are now cancelled, and they are officially removed from the program.
as a reminder, Mark and Joan are still willing to swap with any of you independently. just drop them a line...you have their address. but in case you don't, here they are...
Mark (Noiz)
noiz5wayz@...
Joan (Tiger)
joandegrave@...
-------------------------------
so ends this chapter in the weekly behind the scenes running of this list. I wonder what fun I'll have next week...heh heh heh....
Cheers!

---------------------------
the next day I seriously looked at this all again, and went back to Fogie's
original instructions on how to set up the swaps. and there it was...in black and white pixels...
----------------------------
a deep sigh to myself....another verification gone wrong. turns out it was some of the TNT groups that were being swapped with. the 3 to 4 weeks he was assigned different TNT groups, and the one that didn't send him a verify
was the TNT Playroomz Tiger Purrz list. but it started a research campaign for me, and I checked out the past issues for ALL 19 of their groups.

Hey Thorny. Don't let it get you down. I'm sitting here loosing members because I can't do my list right now and another is trying to help and not doing exactly what I did. I'm getting flack about what he is doing, but I don't see anyone else stepping up to the plate to help put out an issue while I'm down.

It seems that the old adage is true. You can't please some of the people "even" part of the time. I hope to be getting these legs repaired sometime before Christmas and be back up and at least walking again.(I'm a little old now to run) Then I'll be back with you and hopefully put things back up to some real numbers.

========================
The TNT Playroomz debate
========================

1 hour writing to the folks that send in the above, making sure the ad copy
is right, etc,

1 hour (in a normal week) chasing down complaints of "why didn't so-and-so
send me an ad swap verification" , and trying to convince all to make sure
their verifications are standard so everyone can understand them. this has
greatly decreased since the time I put out the standardization of the
verifications. this usually also includes trying to calm down the original
complainer so they don't up and leave the program over a stupid ad
verification.

The TNT Playroomz debate
============ ========= ===

A few weeks ago I received this from Mark of TNT Playroomz.

------------ --------- --

------------ --------- --------- -----
my reply
------------ --------- --------- -----
hiya!

well...THIS took me by surprise!

ok...some numbers here...

you have 19 groups you're promoting. last week we had 69 adult groups
swapping. so, you DO have a good chunk of the groups available.

------------ --------- ------

the next day I seriously looked at this all again, and went back to Fogie's
original instructions on how to set up the swaps. and there it was...in
black and white pixels...
------------ --------- ------
------------ --------- ------
yep, I had been doing it back-assward, starting with the "7-swap" groups
first. so I dumped the entire database I had been using and starteed fresh.
I wrote to Mark....
------------ --------- ------
Dear Mark & Joan!

------------ --------- ------
that week I wrote to all in the EAZY AD SWAPZ announcements. ...
------------ --------- ------
I'm re-doing how I figure these out. Seems that old Fogie was a lot better
at this than I am...so I'm going back to the way he did it. Nothing changes
for the way you handle the swaps...so don't panic. But the distribution
will end up getting you a wider variety of lists you're swapping with...so
enjoy.
------------ --------- ------
so, that was out of the way. then this week I get a note from another
ad-swapper, who will remain anonymous.
------------ --------- ------
after being assigned to swap with basically the same nothing
group for the last 3 to 4 weeks, my conclusion is that I am
just giving away free advertising. a thought I find quite
repulsive. While I do not mind helping a small group once in
a while, I really find it distasteful when they didn't even
bother to run my add this last week. Sorry to do it, but I
am pulling out of ad swaps ...just is not worth the
aggravation.
------------ --------- -------
a deep sigh to myself....another verification gone wrong. turns out it was
some of the TNT groups that were being swapped with. the 3 to 4 weeks he was
assigned different TNT groups, and the one that didn't send him a verify was
the TNT Playroomz Tiger Purrz list. but it started a research campaign for
me, and I checked out the past issues for ALL 19 of their groups. (that was
about 1 1/2 hours shot there). so I sent a note to the original person
explaining that each TNT group was different, then sent this off to Mark.
------------ --------- --------
hi, Mark!

got a complaint about not getting an ad swap back with Tiger Purrz from
someone, so I checked it out.

weird. it's a monthly mag (although it skipped September), yet only runs
two ads. that's 2 ads a month not run....and none of the Sept ones were run,

so I looked around, and most of your groups are running the ads just fine.
but there are a couple exceptions.

Playrooms is a bi-weekly ... running only one ad an issue.
(2 ads a month not run)

Naked Saturday is a bi-weekly... only running one ad an issue.
(2 ads a month not run)

the kind-of-weekly TV Bloopers hasn't had an issue since 27 Sept.
(3 recent ads not run)

at least now I understand how you have so MANY cool lists, yet only run one
ad each....some are only monthly or bi-weekly. of course you wouldn't want
to double up the amount of ads in those...it would be way too many per
issue.

please do get back on track with the above mags, tho. folks DO notice.

and PLEASE PLEASE get Tiger Purrz to run an issue with last weeks ad for
[name excluded] ...as well as make sure this weeks ad for him gets in your
next Noiz Playz. his panties are in a bunch now over this.

concerned,
Papa Thorn

here's his reply
------------ --------- ---

Sincerely... and with apologies,

Mark
------------ --------- --------- --

Mark, I'm not one to get down heavy on anything. just wanted you to check
into it and see if you could patch it up. it sounds like your idea to put
the ads in yourself quite handles a good chunk of it.

I totally understand about working with a partner. things just never get

EVERYTHING yourself.

do have a NICE chat with Tiger, and give her my love!

========================
The TNT Playroomz debate
========================

Just Girlz

On the other 3...

....I do the first half and send it off to her to finish. and then she posts.

Mark (Noiz)
noiz5wayz@mpinet.net

Joan (Tiger)
joandegrave@sbcglobal.net
-------------------------------

so ends this chapter in the weekly behind the scenes running of this list.
I wonder what fun I'll have next week...heh heh heh....

Cheers!

Gday Papa Thorn,

Greetings from Australia.

You are doing a wonderful job in every way and I'm grateful for the work you do.

I don't have time to check who's verifying ads for me. Some people must have a lot more time on their hands than I. I just hope for the best and know that I get plenty of verifications. (And I place one ad every time [five a week out of my 7 daily emails], unless I am away from home or sick, in which case I do my best to put an extra one or two next time. And I verify every time. Maybe I've made a mistake once or twice, but very rarely. I expect most people do the same.)

Don't let the idjuts get you down. I'm sure we're just about all very grateful for your hard work and the complicated stuff you do. I could never do it, I know that.

Thanks for Ad Swaps. Kep up the good work.

Cheers

Well, your job just got a lot easier. TNT Playroomz and all of it's 19 lists

this properly takes over the Swaps we will gladly return to the program.

We consider this sufficient notice so as not to inconvienence the other

========================
The TNT Playroomz debate
========================

Jokez and Toonz

...I do the first half and send it off to her to finish. and then she posts.

I am very diligent with the ad-swap program on the lists I do, and I'm sure
that if you'll compare with the above information you'll agree. But
I get many e-mail and messenger messages from Tiger informing me of various
problems that prevent her from posting on time.

=========================================
this weeks new lists...
adult
A50 has been replaced with a new list

clean
C67, C68, C69, C70, C71, C72 & C73

==========================================

You're going to find the numbers in your ad swap list may be jumbled and out
of order. Those from the days of Fogie will recognize it immediately. I
know it doesn't make sense to you, but it makes it MUCH easier to figure out
the next weeks swaps when I leave it like this.

==========================================
Also in the news...

Since many of you have groups hosted at YahooGroups, let it be known to all
your members that Yahoo, in their infinite wisdom, has gone and changed
their style for the profile page for everyone.

You need to go and update your profile page to make sure your
age...gender...and a general location will show up in your profile. UNTIL
you do this all that shows up is your Yahoo ID.

I know some groups unsub people who do not have their ages in profile when
they do a frequent check. So inform the members so they may get this fixed.

You can go to http://profiles.yahoo.com/ to update your Profile.

that's all for now.

Here's the new ad swaps for this week.

Here's a fun thing which Pat from the Just Humor Me group put together for
all of us...

A-Z Groups Showcase
http://groupshowcase.ning.com/

It's a blog site with a Forum...JUST for listmasters!

Only takes 30 seconds to register, then you can run to the Forum page and
add your groups there.

This forum could be a place for all of us to share suggestions for making
life easier to run our groups.

There's also a handy chatroom where you can yack to each other. One may
also set up your own profile page, make announcements for events or contests
you may be running, and you may also send in pictures and videos.

Nobody's twisting your arm....but it would be a nice place where all us
listmasters may get together and chat, getting to know each other better.
From the correspondence I've had with members of this group I already know
that there's a bunch of great people behind all these groups.

So, go poke around and let's get some action happening here.

Hey Papa Thorn,

Greetings from Bellingen, Australia.

Thanks for the tips.

FYI, I use http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm and it's excellent and free. Perhaps as good as your email stripper, I don't know.

http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/ is another fantastic tool, I'm sure very useful to our ad swapping colleagues and I use it daily.

Best regards, and thanks for all your work in Fogie's grand tradition.

Hiya, Swappers!

Forgot a few things in yesterday's Ad-Swap announcement...

-----------------
There are 2 new clean lists in the mix now

Dana has added a new group to help support her animal shelter
C-11

Van is a returning swapper with a nice Quotes of the Day group
C-13

you can see their ads here
http://able2laugh.com/master/swap/clean_ads.htm

------------------
REMINDER...

Listmasters are encouraged to change their ad content. Stale ads that have
run over and over on everyone else's list will be ignored by the members.
Find a new angle about your list to promote and hook all you can with a new
ad.

ALL of the maillist hosts that I know of (I may be wrong, and I'm sure
you'll let me know if I am) will let a member join with an email
subscription. So every ad SHOULD have a way for the member to join by
email. Include the website link if you'd like so they can get more info
from your front page about the group.

There are also some folks that love to sign up for lists that have no
web-access, only e-mail access. They will ignore your ad if there is no way
for them to join your list by e-mail subscription.

----------------
I am presenting a little tool to help make putting together your lists a bit
easier. You know when someone forwards something to you and it has all
those annoying
>

in front of each line. Then you have to tidy it up to use it yourself.

I have a tiny program called CLEANER. It's almost exactly like notepad, but
will strip out all those annoying >>>.

You can get it here in zip format. Just unzip it an you will have the
program with a small text file which tells you how to use it.
http://able2laugh.com/master/CLEANER.zip

If you have a problem opening .zip files, let me know and I'll get you set
up.
