I would like to share with you the final counts obtained from our colleague Valerie, regarding the number of accessions, tubes and in vitro plantlets distributed by SPC to INEA partners in 2011.
Please have a look at the table here under. Not less than 3857 tubes or bags have been prepared and sent to partners ! They represent many different taro varieties selected for their agronomic performances, taste or tolerance and resistance to taro leaf blight. For the details see the INEA annual report posted on the INEA website ( www.ediblearoids.org).
I think that we will all agree to say that this is just an amazing achievement. As far as I know, there are not many germplasm centers on this planet who can achieve such a fantastic job in such a short time (approx. six months) ! What Valerie Tuia, Mary Taylor and their team in SPC have succeeded to do, smoothly and with high professional skills, deserve worldwide recognition and acknowledgement. These varieties are now in your hands, some are already in the field. Our INEA project is on the right track, thanks to SPC.
During the year 2012, we will focus on their field propagation (and on the preparation of samples for the EU partners of course...!). Lets hope that by next year, following our initial workplan, we will be ready to distribute these genotypes to farmers.
I wish you al the best ... and congratulations to SPC!
With regards
Vincent
