·         Very good knowledge in network switching & routing.

Dear

 

With Microsoft Windows 7; the built in-firewall in amazing. And you can easily control all the incoming/outgoing traffic; so I don’t believe that you will need a third party software to cover the firewall part.  The Firewall Feature from Microsoft was introduced in windows XP SP2 and there was a very big enhancement in Microsoft Windows Vista then Microsoft Windows 7. Personaly I stopped using Firewall Software (3rd Party since Windows Vista).

Concerning the antivirus; if you want to work legal; I would like to recommend the following software: Microsoft Security Essentials; it is free and you will get update through Windows Updates.

Forefront TMG provides an unparalleled value to the network security marketplace by integrating multiple web security technologies into a single, comprehensive solution. Forefront TMG is also all about “the basics” to ensure that besides the breadth of new features, Forefront TMG also provides the best infrastructure to run those features: reliability, scalability, performance and security.

 

In the following sections I will list some of the new functionality that Microsoft has added into TMG and will cover some of our infrastructure investments.

 

·         Secure Web Gateway: Forefront TMG is a Secure Web Gateway (SWG) that improves security enforcement by integrating multiple detection technologies such as URL filtering, Anti Malware, and intrusion prevention into a single, easy-to-manage solution. Microsoft has seen a lot of interest in the features that comprise this solution, so here is some information on what they do and how:

o   URL Filtering: URL Filtering allows controlling end-user access to Web sites, protecting the organization by denying access to known malicious sites and to sites displaying inappropriate or nonproductive materials, based on URL categories. TMG features over 80 URL categories including security-oriented categories, productivity-oriented and liability-oriented categories. Forefront TMG uses Microsoft Reputation Services (MRS), a cloud-based categorization system hosted in Microsoft data center. To ensure the best bandwidth utilization and low latency, Forefront TMG has implemented a local URL cache. There is a lot more on URL Filtering available in an earlier URL Filtering post.

o   Anti Malware: Stopping malware on the edge significantly decreases the possibility that a virus will hit a computer with anti-virus signatures that are not up-to-date or a test computer without an anti-virus to protect it. TMG has integrated the Microsoft Anti Malware engine to provide world class scanning and blocking capability on the edge.

o   Network Inspection System (NIS): NIS is a generic application protocol decode-based traffic inspection system that uses signatures of known vulnerabilities, to detect and potentially block attacks on network resources. NIS provides comprehensive protection for Microsoft network vulnerabilities, researched and developed by the Microsoft Malware Protection Center - NIS Response Team, as well as an operational signature distribution channel which enables dynamic signature snapshot distribution. NIS closes the vulnerability window between vulnerability disclosures and patch deployment from weeks to few hours.

 

In addition, Microsoft has introduced HTTPS scanning to enable inspection of encrypted sessions, eased the deployment and management with a set of easy to use wizards and significantly improved logging and reporting to provide full visibility into how your organization is accessing the web and whether it’s compliant with your organization’s policy.

 

·         VPN, Firewall, Email Protection and Infrastructure:

Microsoft has also made significant investments to ensure that we keep delivering top notch VPN and Firewall functionality. Microsoft made quality improvements in Web Caching and made sure it works well with the new Windows 7 BranchCache feature. Microsoft have added several new features, among them: Email Protection, ISP redundancy, NAP integration with VPN role, SSTP, VoIP traversal (SIP support), Enhanced NAT, SQL logging and Updated TMG Client (previously known as the Firewall Client). In addition TMG was built as a native 64bit product that supports Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 SP2, allowing better scalability and increased reliability.

That is one of the greatest problems that we are facing nowadays specially in Egypt due that we don’t following the standards for mailing system in Egypt. You can face companies in Egypt that are using DSL for Home to send email; also they don’t configure their firewall to only allow the mail system to connect through port 25 which cause that users can be affected by Virus and spreading spam emails from the Organization network to the internet.

 

In general; each SMTP gateway responsible of sending emails should have a PTR and any emails systems should be configured to not accept any email from domain without checking its PTR. Also as best practices; each domains should have a SPF Records in its DNS Zones.

 

Also you can make the IP that is used for Exchange (sending/receiving emails) different from the IP address used for browsing and other services.

 

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2007; there is a role name Edge Server that is acting at the SMTP Gateway; this server is responsible of send/receive all the emails of Organization on the Internet.  You can configure the Edge to filter the incoming emails. If you don’t have the Edge; you can enable these features on the edge as they are not enabled by default.

I'm facing these problem with a lot of emails related to Update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express specially (KB910721) to all my network users, I tried to test these link in a test machine out of my Infra. network & redirect to another link with approximately same GUI of MSFT but not it like *.nniukih.eu\* , *.fedhyniz.eu\* , *.tj1fiil.tc\* , *.lllliok.me.uk\* and a lot of others sites, which I do believe it is a spam or malwares.

 

Sophos detects this threat as Troj/Spy-CU.

 

So I do some steps for these:-

  • send a warning message to all users to avoid these links.
  • block a lot of mentioned URLs from access via ISA. ( most of these mails contains different sites )

these mails comes from one sender (Microsoft Update Center [mailto:noreply@...])

 

My Question: how could I block these mails from EX2K7, but In the same time I need to receive mails from Microsoft trusted support team.

One of the biggest issues that Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Administrators are facing is: Where is the Whitelist in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007?

Whitelists are common in most 3rd-party anti-spam tools. Adding domains or SMTP addresses of important senders like customers, vendors, or your CEO's home email address  for instance, ensures messages from these domains or addresses do not get filtered by the anti-spam filter.

When you browse the different options of Mail Flittering on the Edge Server or the HUB Server; you will not find this tab; so how can we manage our Whitelists?

The good news is Microsoft Exchange Server 2007's Content Filter Agent has whitelists! You can add SMTP addresses and domains to the Content Filter configuration, and have messages from these senders and domains bypass the Content Filter Agent. However, you need to resort to the Exchange shell (EMS) to manage it.

Use the following shell command to add sender SMTP addresses to the BypassedSenders list:

Set-ContentFilterConfig -BypassedSenders waleed@..., abdelnasser@...

Use the following command to whitelist the sending domain:

Set-ContentFilterConfig -BypassedSenderDomains  company.com.eg, company.com

Before you start using whitelists, here are a few things you should consider:

SMTP headers can be spoofed easily. If spammers spoof any of the addresses or domains you whitelist, your recipients may end up getting more spam as all of it will bypass the Content Filter.

Use SenderID Filtering to detect and protect your mail system from header spoofing. Maintaining whitelists, just as maintaining blacklists, is a manual process that imposes its own management costs.

Checking every inbound message against a list of whitelisted recipients imposes a performance penalty - miniscule as it may be. Use the whitelists sparingly.
