USDA FSIS Approves Hiring of Private Inspectors for HorseMeat

In the past year there has been an effort to remove federal funding
from the horsemeat inspections as a way to end horse slaughter. The
move has backfired & the USDA is moving ahead with plans for the 3
foreign owned slaughterhouses to pay for their own inspections.

The bottom line is this:

"The supporters of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, AHSPA
must level the playing field by hiring the best professional federal
lobbyist that money can buy; Anything less results in the continued
slaugher of America's Horses against the Will of the American People"

Christine Berry, Equine Protection Network

in response to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service
Fee for Service Program for Horsemeat in defiance of the
Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and
Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2006 (H.R. 2744)

Anyone who believes that animal welfare organizations have the most
powerful lobbyists in Washington is naive.

Anyone who believes that letter writing & calling your Congressman
is going to win against the high powered lobbyists in Washington DC
is naive.

Horse Slaughter & low end horse auctions, the "Trash Dumps", of the
horse industry exist because the horse industry wants them to exist.
There is enough wealthy owners and money in the horse industry that
if they wanted horse slaughter to stop it could stop tomorrow by
simply using their money to hire the best professional federal
lobbyist, AND by taking responsibility for the horses that they
create, use, & discard when they are no longer useful. The
Breed 'Em, Trash 'Em & Can 'Em attitude of the Horse Industry.

The EPN stands behind our effort to educate horse owners & require
horse owners to take responsibility for their horses to insure that
their horses never end up at slaughter or begin the downhill slide
into neglect.
