A Strange one. Send me the old and the new .HHP if you like.

Maybe an invalid width got stuck in the HH persistent data store. Dunno.

I ended up creating a new hhp file with the existing files in the help project,
and have no problems changing hhp settings now. Thanks Paul and Rob for your
responses :)
Hi,
I was changing the "Navigation pane width" on the TriPane dialog from 0 to 250.
If I change any hhp setting and compile then the chm won't open. I just now
opened the 05/09 hhp and unchecked "remember window position and size" and
compiled - "unable to open chm" message.
I think I may try creating a new project with the existing files - this hhp will
need to change eventually I'm sure.
Hi Janet
(and thanks Paul) You know it is actually easy to set width=0
if you (on the Windows Types page) misread the fields... they are
Left, Top, Right, Bottom -- The reason why I didn't use Left, Top, Width
, Height
was a decision to make FAR setting very similar to the raw .HHP
settings.
So if you make Left=250 and Right=250 then you have a width of zero.
But if you did some other action please let me know.
Thanks
Rob

The hhp has not changed since may 09. I am unable to open the chm after
compiling again. No error number is reported and it appears to compile
ok. just when i try to view the chm a dialog states "cannot open the
file"...and lists the path. If I restore the may 09 hhp and compile
the chm opens fine.

I figured it out - you are right - the problem was with a new window type
specified with the Project Editor; When I opened the TOC Editor and looked at
the Properties tab (which I had never done before), I unchecked "Dialog frame"
and the blue border was not present in the chm. Thanks for your response - BTW
FAR works great!!

TOC area? Sounds like you may have experimented with TOC advanced settings.
In the TOC properties page, hit the Reset button to reset your styles.
Save and recompile.
You could also create a brand new HHP and HHC file and compare the
settings with your current project. Even open 2 copies of FAR side by side.
HH had lots of features that were never really completed. Some of them
could get you into a bit of trouble. Always a trap for those starting

Above the topic list is a large blue tab-like region; thin blue outline around
rest of content tab. Other help projects compiled with FAR do not have this blue
region. I have looked at the project settings and am unable to identify why it

I have converted existing .hhp project to .hxc project using FAR. Both projects
are using existing HTML files.
I am getting this error 'Error: HXC3023: Failed to open file' when I try to
compile the .hxc project.
I used Innovasys's HelpStudio to generate the help files and compared the HTML
files with existing ones. My HTML files have some META and LINK tags which are
not closed.
Is there any documentation to see which HTML format is valid to use with FAR or
hxcomp?
Thanks,
Thank you so much for responding so quickly, and on a Sunday! When I looked into trying your solution, I discovered I had forgotten to add the child chms to the merge file list. So I added them and recompiled, and everything has been merged successfully and looks great.
I appreciate the information you sent.
Thanks again.

Hi Cynthia You must have a setting that's wrong. Especially make sure all Project files have setting: non-Binary TOC, Binary Index as this will inhibit the merging. If that does not help send me all your HHP, HHC, HHK files so I can look at them.

Hi,
I used a trial version of FAR HTML several months ago and successfully merged
the TOC, index, and search of multiple chm files by including the child chms in
the TOC of the parent chm. When I compiled the parent chm, the index and search
were merged as well. When we purchased our multi-user license and registered it,
I downloaded the registered version (4.3.0.681).
Now when I include child chms in the parent toc and compile, only the toc is
merged. So I imported the file content of one of the child indexes. It seemed to
work and I could see the child index entries in the compiled parent chm.
However, when I tried to open child index entries, I received an error (this
page can not be displayed in Internet Explorer), but, parent index entries are
fine. I was working on my local drive. I verified that child index entries had
topics linked to them.
How can I merge the indexes and search of all child chms with the parent chm?
Watch your log and try and pinpoint when these files are compiled into
the CHM. If there is link to the file in you HHC, HHK, HHP or from
any HTML .. you have to track it down and remove that link.
Its debugging work.
Removing the file directly from the CHM is rather dangerous and not
the best way to correct your project.

Hi
You have to be very careful with HTML Help projects.
The compiler "follows links" and automatically pulls in files.
Always good to use FAR HH Utils window to make sure it all looks
ok inside the CHM (which is like a big zip file).
In your FAR "HHP Editor" make sure Compiler> Display Compiler
Progress/Notes are Checked.
Now the Compile Log will show you all the paths of files added to the CHM.
Keep an eye on this log! It gives you a clue to as to when and if
strange files
are pulled into the project.
Remember there are also links to your HHC and HHK files too.

Should be problems. But I don't think I've every tried D2007.
You'll soon find out - if Help events don't fire then you need the fix unit.

The Unicode release is quite a change for Delphi (which may explain

Hi,
I'm new to FAR, new to this group, and generally pretty ignorant about building
.chms. Anyway, my .chm builds are referencing all kinds of files from other
projects. I'm not sure why this is happening, and it's not really a problem,
except when Search returns topics that aren't in the .chm. I've tried using the
HH Utilities dialog to remove them, but they just re-appear after I re-compile
the .chm. Does anyone know how to remove these extra file references?
Thank you.
Thanks much for your kind offer. I removed all graphics and recompiled so
I could send you the CHM -- and guess what? No “Redirect Page” topic
appears in the Search returns.
:-)
So perhaps one of the graphics
files in the original file somehow had the word “security” attached to
it, although no graphic has that word in the filename.
When the current deadline is over, I’ll experiment a little to see if I
can track down the culprit. If I learn anything of interest, I’ll share
it with you and the group.
Yes add them back in a few at a time till you find the problem.
It may be a file name such as xxxxxxxxx.hxxxx.gif
HH Compiler is a bit crude and would mistake the above for a HTML file
and attempt to parse it for search terms etc.
Folder names like \xxx.Hxxx.xxx\
can also cause problems.

Thanks much for your kind offer. I removed all graphics and
recompiled so I could send you the CHM -- and guess what? No “Redirect
Page” topic appears in the Search returns.
So perhaps one of the graphics files in the original file somehow
had the word “security” attached to it, although no graphic has
that word in the filename.
When the current deadline is over, I’ll experiment a
little to see if I can track down the culprit. If I learn anything of interest,
I’ll share it with you and the group.
Thanks again for your always-terrific support!
Gay

Hi Gay
Don't know. If you want free to send me the CHM so I can make a comment.
- if you delete all images before compiling, and send instructions that
would be great

Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2,
I compiled a .CHM as usual, and in doing some spotchecks, found that when using
the Search function to look for the keyword “Security”, among the
several topics returned, one is called “Redirect Page” but when I
try to open that “topic”, it gives me a DNS error
(“Page cannot be displayed”).
Does anyone know what is being included in my project to produce this?
I don’t have redirect.html in my project folder and I read the FAR help
but can’t find anything that seems relevant to this problem.
Thanks for any suggestions or help,

This is a manual job. You may need to decompile each to its own
folder (incase of clashes with filenames). And because of that you
may need to adjust link paths (FAR find and replace will help). You
will notice that the latest FAR TOC Editor (you may need the Beta - I
forget), has a TOC > Import - This can be used to manually merge your
TOC (and Index) files into one master file.
