As demands by society on the forest increase, forest managers are asked to consider increasingly diverse and complex objectives. Around the globe, forest managers have turned to forest estate modeling (aka wood supply modeling, timber supply modeling) as a tool used to provide insight into problems that are too complicated to be solved intuitively. The expectations of sustainable forest management require resource analysts, forest managers, and decision makers to understand the current state of forest estate models and how information from these models can improve forest management decisions.
The Forest Estate Modelling Discussion List provides a communication tool around the topic of forest estate modelling and the forest management decisions that can benefit from the use of forest estate modelling. Discussion is welcomed among members on the technical topic of forest estate modelling and on the use and decision side for all forest values including timber, habitat, biodiversity, water, etc.
This discussion list was established as part of the June 2007 conference titled Decisions for Sustainability: Forest Estate Models for the Future held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
