Hi Rusty:

From what I know, you don't need to have an If Frame Loaded in a MC because
the whole movie clip has to load into the main movie before it will even
play.

Is it possible to do an If Frame Loaded command within a movie clip? Everytime I
try to do it and then export it as a swf my Flash hangs. Reminds me of what
happens when I try to use PS fonts on my NT with Flash.

Please advise.

Hi Christian,

I'm new to flash and want to thank you for posting your site... It looks
like a get site for new Flashers like me, I plan to spend a lot of time there.

Rusty and Jayma thanks, that sums it up what I'm doing wrong. I make my
movies hundreds and hundreds of frames and layers. I end up with 900K
movies but it's the only way I know how to make each menu item work. I
make one scene for each menu item, then I copy all the menu buttons and
paste them on each scene so the all the scenes have the same navigation.

It gets to be a huge movie.

What I want to do is when someone clicks on a button, a nice mini movie
plays so I make a scene with its own layers and animations and when someone
clicks on a button I say Go To Scene # and play. At the end of the scene
there's an action that tells it to back to the scene that had the button.

Any suggestions? My movies are to huge to be published.

The only work around that I know of I got directly from Jonathan Gay (the
origional creator of Future Splash before it became MM's Flash). He basically
said to uninstall ATM. But I would then be forced to use True Type fonts.

Basically they don't work together. If you use an ATM font under Windows NT in
your Flash presentation, the program stops responding when you try to anti-alias
the font (for example, using the View > Antialias Text option or using Test
Movie). You can continue to use TrueType fonts without problems.

Windows 95 and Macintosh versions of ATM have no such problems. We've reported
this bug to Adobe. ATM for NT hasn't been updated since 1997, by the way.

Hi Sienna,
One thing about the other list is that folks were starting to get tired of the
newcomers. Instead of answering questions they would point them to the myriads
of websites at their disposal. I hope we will be more tolerant here.
To give you an overview of Tell Target I will be glossing over the technical
stuff and trying to just give you a basic overview. Anyone can feel free to
correct me.
Tell Target is a pretty cool way for optimizing Flash and utilizing the
Streaming capabilities. The idea is that you can tell a movie clip what to do
INDEPENDENTLY from the timeline of the main movie. Now, if you are making movies
that go from frame 1 to frame 100, fine.
Here is an example of what I am currently using TT for (err... that's Tell
Target). I have a site map that I want to be more informative than a simple
static site map. Here is what I do. I create a movie clip. In the movie clip I
place some cross hairs like through the scope of a gun. In Frame 1 the
crosshairs are over the icon on the map signifying "HOME" in frame 2 I place the
crosshairs over the "Movie Reviews" icon. When the user goes to my site the
"Home .swf file TT's to the movie clip telling it to go to and stop on frame 1.
When they go to the Movie Reviews section, that .swf TT's to the movie clip and
tells it to go to and stop on Frame 2. It's a relatively simple way of creating
multiple action not reliant on the main timeline. I hope that helps you get a
grasp.

There are a few things in Flash that are really hard to grasp. Especially if you
have not experienced anyhting like it before. Trust me...I know. You will
probably get stumped on Load Movie, Tell Target, and creating Pop Up Menus. Feel
free to ask away at anytime. I had so much trouble with those I am more than
willing to help anyone out of their funk.

Hi Sienna:

I am not sure what your question is exactly, but there are many advantages
to using tell target.

I was with you a few months ago... I just couldn't see any purpose for
them, when so many things can be accomplished in other creative ways in
Flash. Actually, this is one thing I love about Flash, that you can do so
many things in so many different ways. It is all about being creative.
There really doesn't seem to be one correct way to do anything. I have
found there are several solutions to any given prospect.

For me, one thing that is really nice about Tell Targets is that you can
contain your main movie into a much more compact timeline. Another
advantage is not having to create an "if frame loaded" loop for some
elements. Yet another is being able to create the DHTML feeling without
having your main timeline cluttered. It really depends on your needs and
design.

If I had more of an idea of what you have thought about using TTs for,
perhaps I could give you more advantage/disadvantage thoughts. But
honestly, there are so many aspects, that I would only be generalizing.

Please let me know more.

Hoping to help,
Jayma

I may as well say something I hope to learn on this list that I didn't feel
comfortable asking in the other list.

I don't understand tell targets or what advantage I have if I learn them.

I'm not new to flash however; I'm not good at it either because I don't get
to spend as much time learning it as I'd like to. Maybe now on a slower
list, I'll be able to understand the more complex issues of Flash.

Thanks for the new list whoever started it.

Well, someone may as well kick off the new list. I sincerely hope that this
list will be better than the Flasher alias. There is a lot of good information
to be gotten from the brilliant minds scattered throughout the list but those
darned spammers.

Anyway, welcome one and all.

My question is this... For those of you who don't know, Flash 3 coupled with NT
and Adobe Type Manager causes Flash to hang when trying to utilize postscript
fonts. Converting to True Type is not an option for me. Does anyone have NT and
a different Font Manager where the problem is not evidenced?

This is a new list but most users in here are refugees from another Flash list
that got out of control. Feel free to pipe in with any questions you may have.
There are a lot of resources here just for the asking. Don't worry, we are nice

If you are running a mac, you can usually get away with just removing the
plug-ins. I am not sure about Windows based machines, but I seem to
remember a friend of mine lamenting that he had to do the
uninstall/reinstall thing. I could be wrong though.

For Windows 95 or 98 and the ActiveX control:

1) Run the following command line using the Run command from your Start menu.
This will uninstall the registry entries which apply to the Flash ActiveX
control:

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH\SWFLASH.OCX /U

If necessary, replace C:\WINDOWS with the path where you store Windows.

2) Remove the file SWFLASH.OCX from your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH
subdirectory.

For Windows NT and the ActiveX control, it's the same process as described
above, but the SWFLASH.OCX file lives in C:\WINNT40\SYSTEM32\MACROMED\FLASH
instead.

For the Netscape plug-ins, remove the file NPSWF32.DLL from your
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\PLUGINS
or
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\NAVIGATOR\PROGRAM\PLUGINS
subdirectory.

For Macintosh users, just remove the "Shockwave Flash NP-PPC" plugin from your
browser's plugins folder.

Anyone having success tying into an Oracle dB? If so, how did you do it? How
did you use Generator? Was it for list, single text fields or image
replacement etc?

We are attempting to replace text variables within Flash with data pulled
from an Oracle dB. Is there a way to do this and _not_ use ASPs?

Thanks in advance.

Does anybody know how to remove the Flash plug-in after it is already
installed? do I just move a file out of a particular folder, or do I have
to uninstall and reinstall the browser all over again, or what?
I need to know for both IE and Netscape, if anyone can tell me.

TIA,
Joe

Me and my big mouth.

Disclaimer: I've never used Beatnik, so I have no idea what/which metaevents you
can pass back and forth between Flash and Beatnik. This type of question would
be almost impossible for me to guess an answer on without more specific
information on what you're trying to do.

Time to visit http://www.beatnik.com, I guess.

Brad,

Nice to know you're around here.
I'll take you up on your offer.
I'm currently developing a project that involves external control over a
flash movie. The controlling events are triggered by metaevents arriving
from a beatnik rmf file. Now what I've been trying to do is to guess the
minimum granularity I can achieve. In other words beatnik can handle
events that are about 80ms apart. If I send for example a series of
TGotoLabel, or TPlay events targeted at various movie clip instances in
a Flash movie will it be able to handle them all without burping ?
Initial tests seem to show no problem but I'm testing on a PIII so
results could vary. What can you tell me on this. I do know all the swf
specs but I can't figure what a movie will do if it can't handle it.
Should I time the events so that there is a minimum time between each ?

Keri

Flash is only compatible with Illustrator 6.0 format. If you create
something in 8.0, you must save it as a 6.0 version in order to import
it into Flash properly.

After having this same experience, I consulted the manual and Macromedia
tech support. 6.0 is the limit, because that was what was out when Flash
was developed. Hopefully, the next version won't have that problem or
Macromedia will come up with an update/fix.

Hi everybody,

I'm having difficulty importing Illustrator 8 images in to Flash when they
have the gradient mesh in them. I've even tried converting the image to an
Illustrator 7 format, but it doesn't help. I just get this jumbled graphic
that looks nothing like the original image.

Has anybody else come across this? If so, what did you do to fix it? I am
on a Mac format.

Thanks,

Keri
