Hi all, did anyone catch Doug Tallamy on NPR on Friday afternoon? He was discussing the concepts in his new book "Bringing Nature Home" (http://www.amazon.com/Bringing-Nature-Home-Wildlife-Expanded/dp/0881929921/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243359366&sr=8-1). I don't have the book yet, but the discussion was fantastic and focused on the role of native plants in supporting native food webs. He had some great statistics about how native plants support more native invertebrates (and so on throughout the food web) than exotic plants do (e.g., phragmites supporting 5 insect species after 400 years in the USA vs
156 insect species in its native Europe), and also within native plants, which ones support the broadest diversity of inverts (e.g., oak trees support 534 species of caterpillars vs 21 on tulip trees). It was a great interview, which you can hear here http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=104447716&m=104447699. Can't wait to see the book!
