If you haven't heard him, Mark gives a pretty clear, concise talk on these critters, all of whom are here, or moving rapidly towards us.  The goal is to have landowners, hikers, etc. able to recognize the signs and alert responsible parties (DEC, researchers, whoever) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Smaller infestations are easier to control.  So if you, or any hiking, logging, landscaping, or landowning neighbors are not familiar with the insects, their life cycles, and how to detect them, please consider attending.

[JOE, please make a note on the FLNPS website, and/or forward to any other list-serves that seem appropriate.  Thanks]

Subject: Fwd: invasive forest insects class press release

Hi Rosemarie,

Is there any way to let the FLNPS folks know about this?  The media are not as helpful in publicizing as they used to be.  I have only 2 folks signed up.

Invasive Insect Pests That Threaten New York’s Forests
Thurs. June 11, 6:30-8:30 pm

Our forests are threatened by invasive insects from abroad, particularly the Emerald Ash Borer, Asian Longhorned Beetle, and Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.  Mark Whitmore of Cornell’s Natural Resources Department will discuss basic biology, outline potential impacts, and explain how to look for these insects.  Invasive Insect Pests will be presented Thurs. June 11, 6:30-8:30 pm at the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca.  Fee:  $5.  Pre-registration preferred.  Please call 272-2292 (Pat Curran) for more information or registration.
