Jim,
Hi! How are you doing? What's new?
We are looking forward to seeing you all once again and to a very sucessful GSV
2010.
You take care!

Yes, we do have the dates set, the Georgia SkyView 2010 Star Party is scheduled
for May, 13, 14, 15 & 16th of 2010. Hopefully, we'll miss the "April Showers"
and it won't be too hot. Since we always schedule the star party around the new
moon and on a weekend with the least competition from other events, thats the
reason for the May scheduling this year. The '09 event just missed the NEAF
convention, this year the new moon of April and this NEAF coincided.
Tom Moore has started a GSV'10 page on the FRAC website.
http://www.flintriverastronomy.org/GSV2009.htm
Please watch the site as more information will be put up as we finalize the
preparations. We hope to see every one of you there this year. This star party
is more like a family get together. If a single one of you couldn't make it,
something would just be missing.

Hello all
Now the that the Fall Star parties are now behind us i.e PSSG and MASP.
I am now sighting my telrad on the GSV 2010, being that the Fall Star Parties
were all a wash out I am really looking even more now to a good Spring Star
Party. I NEEEEEEDDDD it :) Having withdraws, I need a good observing fix.
So do we know what the GSV2010 dates will be yet? Please let us know soon so
that we can plan for the event.
Regards, Jim S.
Greenville, S.C
Tom,
I just posted 54 phtos of the star party in the FRAC Yahoo Gp, Photos, 2009 GSV

Well, it's finally over. The Georgia Sky View of 2009 is now in the history
book. Even though the event is over, I, for one, will never forget it. It was
my first attempt at organizing an event of this magnitude. Too say the least, I
was skeptical of my ability to pull it off.
In my opinion, the event was a great success. But, my opinion doesn't count.
The opinion of the people that attended the event is what counts. I'll let them
judge the success of the event. After all, that's what it was all about, those
that attended the event.
The event lived up to its prime purpose of bringing familiar faces back together
for a great weekend of observing, learning, and camaraderie. The fine bunch of
people that come to the event each year is what makes the event what it is. The
other things like the great speakers and the "pot luck dinner" are the icing on
the cake so to speak.
Brian Combs and Norm Worsley were outstanding and gave excellent presentations.
Each of them went far beyond what I had expected. Norm actually "saved my
bacon" on several occasions with his help with computer problems. Of course,
Phil Sacco was in true form. With him giving not one but four presentations was
something I could have never expected from anyone. Larry Owens and Dr. Richard
Schmude gave outstanding presentations as well. Larry Owens's presentation on
astrophotography had information that was valuable to both beginners and
experienced astrophotographers alike. Dr. Schmude always puts on a good show.
If you've ever experienced one of his presentations, you know that he makes you
get involved in the presentation. You're not just someone in the audience, he
gets you involved in it. This time, it was in the form of a "pop test" after
the presentation. Ironic that's he's a professor at a college, wouldn't you
agree.
Although I was listed as the coordinator of the event, the success of the event
was due to the many people that helped me pull it all off. First and foremost
(for obvious reasons that I think you'll understand) I have to thank my wife,
Betty, for her outstanding efforts in the kitchen. Her cooking breakfast and
"midnight munchies" were invaluable. I'd also like to extend my thanks to
everyone else that helped in making this event successful. Those people include
Bill Warren for being the "glue" that held everything together during the
planning stage, Felix Luciano & Larry Higgins for their help with the grilling,
Tom Moore for managing the outstanding website, Doug Maxwell for his help with
the heating and refrigeration problems at the site, Dan Pilatzki for his help
with plumbing problems at the site, Dwight Harness for providing the satellite
connections, and the host of other people that pitched in to help. People like
Alan & Sally Bolton, Jerry and Beverly Williams, the list goes on and on. But
mostly, the people that attend the event is what made it what it was. Without
them, the event would be just another public gathering. I was especially glad
to see several members from the Middle Georgia Astronomical Society (MGAS) at
the event. The Georgia Sky View is more like a family reunion rather than a
star party and that is what makes it different from other star parties.
So with that I'll send my most heart-felt "Thank You" to everyone that
participated in the event at any level. It will be an experience that I will
never forget. Now, let me get busy with planning next year's event. Hope to
see all of you there again.
Steve Bentley
Just got back from the GSV 2009 star party and wanted to thank EVERYONE in the
FRAC who was involved for putting on such a great event.
These things don't come together without a LOT of hard work, attention to detail
and cooperation - it was obvious that you guys did your homework. Heck, even
breakfast was served! You gotta love that!
Even though the weather Thursday evening was miserable, it was more than made
up for by the cameraderie and the great weather that followed.
Thanks again to everyone - it was a FIRST RATE EVENT. See you next year

Steve,
(Most likely) I will not meet with you folks at the Huddle House BUT I plan to
meet you all at the Park to help out in whatever is needed.
See you all tomorrow!

Everything is done as far as the preparations for Georgia Sky View 2009 is
concerned. I've purchased the supplies that we need for the event, went out to
the site and spread the ant killer out, and I pick up the tee shirts tomorrow.
The door prizes are in and listed on the Flint River Astronomy website.
www.flintriverastronomy.org
The only thing left to do is go out there and have a good time. According to
what I can gather from the weather forecast, a high front is supposed to be
moving in and should bring some nice weather with it. Temperatures should be
near 80° during the day and drop to the mid 50's at night. Attendance is good
with 60 people signed up to attend.
We've got some good speakers lined up for this year as well. Phil Sacco is
ready with his wonderful presentations as is Larry Owens talking about
astrophotograpy. Then, Brian Combs and Norm Worsley are going to demonstrate
how to operate an observatory remotely. That'll be good information for you
astrophotographers that want to take pictures from the comfort of your own den.
And, last but certainly not least will be Dr. Richard Schmude with a
presentation on Saturn as I understand it. Richard has always put on a
fantastic presentation and he'll probably have a few copies of his book
available.
So, everyone get ready for a real good time this weekend. It's truly going to
be a "Stellar Event". I look forward to seeing you all there.
Steve Bentley
Sounds good Joel. We'd sure like to have you with us at the Huddle House. It's
easy to find as it's right on the main drag through town. But, if you'd rather
just go on out to the site, that's fine too. We'll see you there. We may not
get there exactly on time as I've got to stop by the Park Ranger's office and
pick up the keys and stuff but we'll be there. Thanks.
Steve
Steve
I will be at the park at 9.--don't know about Huddle House but might make
that as well.

Hi Jim. It's good to hear from you. To answer your question, we have six
non-FRAC members signed up so far. Of course, most of the speakers are not
members either. Registrations are running a little behind where I think they
should be by now. Then again, they may be just right. I really don't know as
this is my first year organizing the event. Hopefully, we'll be getting more
registrations in as the date of the event approaches. I got three registrations
in today and hopefully that's an indication that things are starting to pick up.
Have you looked at our door prize page and our speaker page on our main website?
We've got some nice door prizes this year with more on the way.
www.flintriverastronomy.org
The speakers should be good again this year as well. Brian Combs and Norm
Worsley will give a presentation on the remote operation of an observatory.
This is cool stuff. Brian sits in his den in Macon, Ga. and takes beautiful
photos with his telescope that is in an observatory down in Southwest Georgia.
Also Larry Owens will be talking on astrophotography and Dr. Schmude has an
interesting presentation on Saturn lined up. Of course, Phil Sacco always puts
on an interesting and informative presentation. This is what I think they're
going to talk about but it could change. The topic of their presentation is
entirely up to them.
Things are coming together nicely for the event. I've already talked to the
people at Georgia Power and arrainged to make sure the lights are off. If
you'll look at the "Photos" link on this site, you can see what the tee shirts
are going to look like this year. Hope you like the design and color.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing you again this year Jim. Bring as many
people as you can. We'd love to have them. Drive carefully now.
Steve Bentley
Hey Steve
How many folks beside club members are signed up so far for this years GSV star
party? I have another guy from our area who is coming. That makes three.
I hope to send in my registration in the next week.
Jim
That sounds good Jim. GSV is the only time we get to talk with you guys from
S.C. and I'm looking forward to it. Sorry about the other guys. I hope the
other things that they have to do is as much fun as GSV is going to be.
Since this is my first year running the event, I don't know if the number of
registrations are where they should be at this point. I think they're pretty
close. It's still over a month away from the cutoff of the early registration
deadline. Once that date gets here, I have to place the order for the tee
shirts so we can get them done in time for the event. Since the economy is in
the shape it's in, the printer doesn't order the shirts until the last minute.
They only order what they need and no extras. Cutting costs as much as they
can. Everyone is doing that these days. Make sure you go to the "photos"
section and take a look at this years tee shirt design.
Ok Jim, try to get as many people as you can to come with you. We'd love to
meet some more astronomers from S.C.. We're looking forward to seeing y'all at
the party. Drive carefully now.
Steve B.
Hey Steve
I plan on being there this year along with one of my observing buddies. Two
other guys had planed on attending as well but they found out that they had
other things at were at the same time so they will not be with us.
I am looking forward to coming to the GSV09, hope its a going to be a good
turnout of folks.
Regards, Jim S.

This year's Georgia Sky View is progressing nicely. We're starting to
get registrations and door prizes in for the event. The door prizes
that we've gotten in so far are shown on the official FRAC website.
http://www.flintriverastronomy.org/frac/GSV2009Prizes.htm
We've gotten a promise of at least one more door prize from Orion. It
will be shipped at a date closer to the opening date of the event.
I rode out to the site today to check things out. The Park Ranger
told me that two of the dorms had be revonated (he didn't say which
ones and there are four dorms) and the other two would be renovated
at sometime in the near future. For those choosing to stay in the
dorms, they will probably be nicer than they have been.
I'm working very closely with Georgia Power in order to insure that
the lights will be turned off this year. I've sent my contact in
the "Customer Service Department" a letter and a map showing the
exact locations of all the lights that we need extinguished for the
event.
I've sent out over 100 letters to different vendors and manufacturers
of astronomical gear requesting door prizes. Hopefully, as the event
nears, we'll be receiving more door prizes. We're expecting to have
Camera Bug at the event as a vendor and I've sent letters to several
other vendors inviting them to our star party as well.
The tee shirt design has been finalized. The shirts will be yellow
this year with black and white logos on them. The front logo will be
a small (3") logo on the left chest area (pocket area) and the rear
logo will be 12 1/4". I felt that putting a small logo on the front
would make the shirt more comfortable to wear having much less ink on
the front. We really wanted a pocketed shirt this year but the color
choices were so limited and just plain dull that we dropped that idea.
While we're on the subject of shirts, if you want to be assured of a
shirt, please get your registrations in by the cutoff date of April
10th. If you wait until later to submit your registration, I may not
be able to guarantee you a shirt. It will take the printer some time
to get the shirts printed up. Don't forget to specify the size shirt
you want.
Ok, that's about it for now. All we need is some more door prizes
and more registrations to come in. Any questions? You can contact me
through the links on the GSV'09 page of our website. Don't miss this
year's event. It's truly going to be a "Stellar Event". See you
there.
Steve Bentley
GSV'09 Coordinator
Planning for GSV'09 is progressing nicely. We've gotten several
donations of door prizes from different contributors. They can be
seen on the club's official website on the GSV'09 Door Prizes page.
All the speakers are lined up and a brief biography of each one
appears on the site as well. They will be giving presentations that
includes a wide variety of subjects pertaining to amateur astronomy.
Each and every one of their presentations sounds like they're going
to be quite interesting and informative.
Event tee shirts are finalized with the logo designs. I'll start a
folder for GSV'09 on this site and the other Yahoo Frac sites. There
will be a picture of the logos in that folder. The front logo will
be a small logo on the left chest area of the shirt. The rear logo
will be on the back (of course). The shirt color for this year will
be yellow with the logos in black with white outline. I've used one
of Ken Walburn's drawings as a base for both logos. The front logo is
the club's official logo (that's one of Ken's drawings as well)
with "GSV'09" added to it. As the event unfolds, I invite anyone
that wants to post pictures to do so.
I'd like to thank those that are assisting me in organizing this
event and we're all looking forward to the best Georgia Sky View yet.

GSV 2009 REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Hello fellow astronomers and welcome! GSV 2009 registration
is officially open and ready. You'll notice that we have made a few
changes most notably that we went back to a three night format
instead of two. The reason we did that last year was to try and make
it easier for people to attend, instead that was the one thing that
was really missed from the previous year. Consider that fixed, we
added Thursday back to the itinerary. That means we'll have two full
days of speakers for you, returning favorites Dr. Richard Schmude and
Phil Sacco along with new speakers such as Larry Combs among others.
We'll have door prizes again along with the pot luck dinner
that has been such a favorite. We're working on some other plans
that are still too fresh to let out yet, but don't worry, I think
you'll like them.
So come along with us. We'd love to have you join us at the
best star party facilities in the southeast!
