The help only mentions this briefly saying that it is a separately
purchased program. Where can we find the installation instructions?

I have cleaned out FS/2 completely and re-installed without doing any
imports. Will keep an eye on it.

Chuck,

The above symptoms are in line with someone who has used the beta a
long time (you) and then installed over an existing directory or
copied the filestar.ini file from the old to the v3 directory. If you
did either, please read the last paragraph of the following link and
import an old ini to a new default ini. This will result in a
'cleaned' old ini.

I am seeing some rather strange behavior in 3.0.1.

Many times the button text is the same color as the background and
cannot be read.

I am getting frequent traps that hang the WPS and need a re-boot to clear.

I will try an upload a zip of the FS logs and popupos2.log.

The initial release, v3.00.00, had an anomaly in that if the program
was installed in the month of December, it caused an immediate
disablement of drag-n-drop and directory operations. This has been
fixed in v3.00.01 which is now available for download. Two other very
minor bugs and two very minor improvements are also included in the
update. Read the fix_list:

<http://www.filestar.com/download/FS2_v300/fix_list.txt>

Registered users are not affected unless they want the minor fixes. It
can be installed over any v3 install if desired.

The updates to the program will be of two types. Evaluation program
updates, which hopefully will be infrequent, will be made available
only when necessary to fix a major flaw such as the above update.
Registered user updates will be made available when a sufficient
number of bug fixes or feature improvements ahve been accumulated to
make it worthwhile for users to update. The registered user updates
will only run on keyed installations.

The FS/2 web site has been modified to support links to download, view
screen shots, buy licenses/keys, etc to both FS/2 and FlexEdit. It's
not the extensive update that I still plan to do but at least it's
functional.

It was in the announcement. It's not in the BMT catalog yet. My web site
is being updated in te background. It'll be up one of these days.
Meanwhile...

The programs install as trial versions so you may try before you buy.
They run uninhibited for one month after installation, then gradually
degrade over the following two months. Please try before you buy. You
may purchase keys to register the programs, which ends the trial status, at:

New User

https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=6&PRODUCTID=5170000

Upgrade

https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=517&PRODUCTID=51700\

When you purchase through BMT Micro, you are buying the keys only and
those keys will be emailed to you by myself when notified by BMT Micro.
The products will be in the BMT Micro catalog in a week or so. CDs are
not available.

You can start the rumors now that the GA will be released on Nov. 15th
unless I fall off a cliff before then. Anyone wanting to seriously try
the latest pre-release now, email me. No promises that I will do that
though if I get a flood of requests. In fact, lets establish now that
only the first 10 requests will be responded to.

Glad to see it come finally. I been saving my pennies but it is not clear that BMT Micro has it at the reported upgrade price. And Your site has not been updated for almost 6 years.

Need to add...

When finished, use the Drives->Disconnect X: menu item to terminate FTP.

Hi All,

A word about ftp.ifs.

The install does not add the IFS to config.sys. You must add the
following IFS statement:

IFS=X:\OS2\BOOT\ftp.ifs

and put the ftp.ifs file in the \os2\boot directory or use the install
psaath and leave in in the FS/2 directory:

IFS=X:\install_path\ftp.ifs

a reboot is necessary for the IFS to be active.

Now there will be a new menu item in the Drives menu, 'FTP Attach'.
This opens the dialog. Use the dialog help in setting up entries in
the URL list. Basically for anonymous ftp sites, you check the
'anonymous' box and enter your email address. This is a one time thing
for anonymous. Other ftp sites may need a user id and password. I
recommend use of Passive also. Use 'Add' and 'Save' to save URL
entries. Drive attachment is instant - but upon clicking the drive,
give it more time than usual to allow for making a connection. Even on
DSL, things are slower so don't get impatient.

This is set up to go to remote directory. Don't try to add a file name
to the URL.

Once in the remote dir, you can use the usual FS2 functions on the files.

When browsing remote directories, don't cue up a lot of clicks when
things are slow. Doing so will just add to the slowness. It isn't all
that bad when you get used to how to use it. I upload at about
40KB/sec and download anywhere from that to 200KB/sec over my low DSL
connection. Speed will be just about the same as a browser download.

If it hangs on you, aborting is more difficult since the abort
mechanism is based on something happening. In worst case, kill the
r3comm background process, which when viewed shows all the background
ftp transactions.

Hi eagle eye,

I hope the only place you see that is in the HLP file. I know it's there
but I thought I took it out elsewhere. I figured that with newview,
there was no need for an INF file so I intentionally took it out.

All GA users,

Knowing full well that few users read the docs, please note that you
may IMPORT (per the help instructions) an older v2 or beta3 ini file
to get your settings transferred but do NOT try copying it into the
GA. Simply to many chances for errors from updated or changed keys
within the ini file. However, the pathmark.ini file may be copied. And
any older custom toolbar may be saved on the old system and loaded in
the GA.

Jim Read and Sierra HyperStar Software gladly (and finally) announce
the release of FileStar/2 version 3.0. It is temporarily available for
immediate download at:

<http://ftp.filestar.com/public/filestar/fsv30000.zip>

It'll be moved to its normal home at www.filestar.com when the site
has been updated.

The product includes FlexEdit, a fast versatile graphical text/hex
editor/viewer, as an integral component. FlexEdit will soon be
available as a separate product. FileStar/2 is priced at $49 for the
combined products and the executable version of FlexEdit is included.
Upgrades from version 2 are available for $34. Those users that have
purchased FileStar/2 since 1 March, 2000 are entitled to free upgrades
as promised. These users must contact me by email to receive the keys.

Read more about it and see a screen shot at:

<http://ftp.filestar.com/public/filestar/graphics/FS30_About.html>

The programs install as trial versions so you may try before you buy.
they run uninhibited for one month after installation then gradually
degrade over the following two months. Please try before you buy. You
may purchase keys to register the programs, which ends the trial
status, at:

New User
<https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=6&PRODUCTID=517000\
0>

Upgrade
<https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=517&PRODUCTID=5170\
001>

When you purchase through BMT, you are buying the keys only and those
keys will be emailed to you by myself when notified bt BMT. The
products will be in the BMT catalog in a week or so. CDs are not
available.

I'm glad that's over!! Any questions besides what took so long?

FYI,

I have an agreement with Vitaliy Tymchyshyn to include his FTP install
file system in the FileStar/2 distribution, to be provided free of
charge. He has provided me with his personal key which will be
included. This will give a user the full capability of his installable
file system. While it is not as as feature capable as Net Drive, it
nonetheless can link any ftp directory address to a drive letter,
providing the user with the capability to perform most FS/2 functions
on remote directories and files, such as viewing and extracting
individual files from a remote zip file or viewing remote documents,
pictures, etc with the same capability as a local file. A broadband
connection is highly recommended but I used it very successfully for
years on a dialup connection. You just have to be patient. FS/2 comes
with a dialog that will set up, connect and save the necessary
connection data for each ftp site.

Mike,

I have not added the link to v3 yet. It should be there NLT tomorrow.
While I appreciate interest in buying a key for v3, I will remind
everyone that it will run keyless for one month after install with no
restrictions so there is no real urgency in buying a key. I will survive
on my retirement income.

Hi Jim,

No problems with BMT Micro- have used them for years. I presume that the
link to their secure server for purchasing Filestar/2 will shortly be
updated from showing Version 2.10.03? :-)

Hi Mike,

Credit cards will be handled through BMT Micro. Looking at their web
site I am not sure how to answer. They do all the usual credit cards.

Mark,

It will. But it was shot with the version shown.
