Hi,

when I enter this forum, I get an impression of my steps echoing from
the walls of an empty room; except for one bit of Spam rubbish, no one
posted anything since my message way back in April.

So, it seems time for another poll!

Kind Regards,

Hi,

last night I tried to compare the efficiency of FindWiz and of
Tamoggemon's FileFind (which also searches cards, but - on the plus
side - lets you easily choose where to search, and - on the minus side
- can only look inside .txt files).

I put a small text file with the string xxyyzz into three different
folders on my card.
I then set both progs to work.

-FindWiz: I called up the well hidden option to select file types,
unticked everything but .txt, waited six minutes while the card was
scanned...
then FindWiz took 1 min 36 s to scan 16,000 records and find the three
files.

-FileFind, if simply given the string, took 11 min 12 s to find the
three files; if told to look only for files with names ending on .txt,
the search procedure took 38 s (no delay before the search started).

So, there's room for improvement in FindWiz's search algorithm, BUT,
as long as you can tell it sufficiently precisely what to look for,
it's doing all right.

Therefore, once again: I think the user interface ought to be made
more efficient (It really bugs me, for example, that to select "Search
all cards" I have to scroll through 25 screens of databases in RAM,
and that I can't even program a button to show that option, because
the next time the card is OFF, the button loses its setting and stays
blank even after the card is ON again.).

For interest's sake, I set FindWiz to also look at .pdb files, waited
the customary six minutes for it to scan the card (cheekily decribed
in Help as "a few seconds if you've got many files on your card" or
something like it), then watched it search for half an hour or so: it
apparently looked into every .pdb file containing data, including my
various Bible versions and a 12 volume (in printed form) encyclopedia.

So, if a simple front end for selecting which folders to search should
be hard to install, how about an option to look only at files with a
certain Creator ID (or even a list of IDs)?

Kind Regards,

Jochen

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
FindWiz_How-To_Group group:

FindWiz should change from "disabling folders" to "enabling folders" - Default
being "nothing searched".

o Yes, that would be invaluable.
o Would be nice, but it's ok as it is.
o No, this isn't necessary even on 8 GB cards if you know how to use FindWiz.

Subject: FindWiz made fit for current high capacity data storage: PLEASE, Richard!

Hi,

this is a really urgent appeal to Richard: I'm afraid that many of the
quirks of FindWiz's user interface were probably fine a few years ago
when Palm devices had 8 MB RAM and a 32 MB SD card was something to be
proud of.

HOWEVER, nowadays some things really, really ought to be changed:

FindWiz ought to have an effective way to narrow down searches.

[...or have I once again overlooked something which makes everything
very easy and very fast? Here's a report on my first serious search
attempts last night; if I simply went about things completely the
wrong way, will someone please tell me??!!!]

To show what I mean I'll give you some results of the fiddling around
I did last night - on my Centro with presently 9 MB free, with a 4 GB
card with 150 MB free.

I use Fontsmoother with a rather small font (Trebuchet 12), but even
so just the databases in RAM occupy 25 screens in the menu at the
bottom left of the screen, and the databases on the card (which it
takes FindWiz nearly SIX minutes to scan) occupy more than TWO HUNDRED
screens.

With such a mass of files, it is simply not practical to assume that
by default the user will want to search through everything, and that
he/she will occasionally want to deactivate some folders.

I took the trouble to scroll, and scroll, and scroll,... to disable at
least the four backups on my card, but there are massive batches of
files I CAN'T disable:

For some years now I've subscribed to a software suite that gives me
all the relevant information about the German football (aka soccer)
scene; this software produces masses (thousands every year) of tiny
text files organized into hundreds of folders for each season.

Unfortunately they are searched BEFORE the text files in one of only
SEVEN folders on the card that I'll ever WANT to search. So, I'll
either have to disable .txt searching, or be prepared to wait for a
looooong time!

This morning I did a test run, having FindWiz search for a rarely used
German word which I knew I had used somewhere.

I let the search process run for an hour, then stopped it: it had
found six occurrences of the word in 320,000 records, and was still
far from finished.

Except for searching for something really important which can't be
found in any other way, this appears to be highly impractical.

Kind Regards,

Jochen

Hi,

having finally got around to buying FindWiz (also in the hope that
this will give Richard a tiny push towards further development of the
program) I could do some more tests, and this time quickly found the
culprit: it was me - I didn't RTFM, or at least not enough.

I simply took it for granted that "CA On/Off" toggled the Card Access;
and as I always started FindWiz from LauncherX, all I got were results
that could be found within LauncherX' databases.

So, in a way, all's well, now, but...

...see my next message.

Kind Regards,

Jochen

Correction to my correction:

The find results weren't actually on the card, but simply inside
LauncherX's list of programs it runs from there.

So, again: Can anyone use FindWiz on a 4GB card?

Hi,

on my Centro FindWiz can find things brilliantly in RAM, but when I
tap "Card OFF", the program flashes "Loading..." at me for about four
minutes, then the icon changes to "Card ON" - and that's all.

I haven't managed to find anything at all on my card, though in Opt ->
Set Preferences -> Tools I toggled the File Extension Display "On",
and several extensions are ticked.

The list which opens from the bottom of the screen shows "Search ALL
DBs", but not the "... all cards" item.

Is there something I missed, or can't the program deal with the
(newish) 4 GB Micro SD cards?

Regards,

Jochen

I have a Handspring Treo 90 with Palm OS ver. 4.1H3.
I use an SD card with this device.
My OS cannot be upgraded on this handheld.
Both FindWiz ver 4 and 3 seem to require OS ver 5.
Is there any way that the current versions of
FindWiz can work with OS 4?
Alternatively, is there an older version of FindWiz available that
will work with OS 4?

Is there some other way of purchasing FindWiz without having to create
an account at this exploreyourpalm.com website. I feel like I already
have joined too many places, and I'm not exactly thrilled with being
asked for address information, etc., just to use PayPal? No offense,
but the program looks to be in dry dock (as is just about anything
PalmOS related these days), but it does work, and I'm willing to buy it
because of that, but not if I have to provide all these details. Seems
excessively intrusive for a $10 app.

Thanks,

- Go to FW main screen
- click on the black triangle at the bottom (where you choose in which
database you search)
- choose dateBK6
- menu/tools/record a DB button
- the 5 black rectangles at the bottom should be blinking.
- click on the black rectangle you want
- that's all !

Hi All,
I have two questions which I hope someone could answer.
Firstly, how can I set up findwiz to display results from the Datebk6 app as
opposed to the
built in PIM app? I have worked out how to get from the results and launch
Datebk, but the
results screen do not seem to display what is actually in Datebk.
The second question is on the options display on the top when the menu bar is
displayed,
there are a couple of spaces under one of the headings (where there should be
something
but there are no options).
Any help/tips would be welcome.
Thanks

Mark
I am using a registered version of Findwiz (the most up to date 4.2), on a Palm
TX and have
Datebk6 v6.1 PL, also registered.

Hi John,

- if you can see the sms database on your SD card or in ram, you can
search it.

- Most countries have paypal, so if you have a friend in one of those
countries they could purchase for you and you could send them a cheque.
I may have a merchant account later to accept credit cards - maybe
after the next release.
