perhaps he's referring to the front-mounted pump on one of the engines? I'm guessing it was a reserve, since i haven't seen one of those in front-line service...

It is my belief they?are called intercab engines when the pump was enclosed in the front of the apparatus as opposed to the front mount outside the cab....

... intra-cab, if it is in front, it is a front mount. Intra-cab is what the manufacturs called them, not a regional name. I believe Western States probably...
