This list began as "the SaveInterBase list" and later became "the IBDI list", an action base for developers who wanted to save the InterBase database from imminent extinction as the result of Borland (then Inprise) Corporation's "sunset policy" toward the end of 1999.

We succeeded, although not before many interesting changes of policy by its owners. In July 2000, the InterBase source code was opened under the InterBase Public License (IPL), a variant of the Mozilla Public License (MPL) and open development of "the daughter of InterBase", Firebird, began.

Firebird has gone from strength to strength under the auspices of the Firebird Project, an international community of dedicated developers.
