I admit that Zinc is much more comprehensive for creating standalone
projectors. So far AIR does look like it can create full standalone
applications meaning you still have to install the flash player
independently. (I might be wrong on this, just installed AIR an hour
ago). AIR creates an installation package that can be distributed to
other users to install but how to create complete programs still
eludes me. ZINC's main purpose is to do just this. Hope to see more
improvements in AIR.

Actually, AIR is free. You can develop AIR apps with Flex, Flash,
AJAX, and/or HTML. It's a really versitile technology. Go download
the Adobe AIR extension for Flash CS3. Or you could go download Flex 3
Beta for free as well. Flex 3 is a trial though. I've been told that
if you just learn how to use Flex, them you'll be able to build AIR
apps with it without really having to learn much more.
The Flash AIR extension allows you to develop, preview, and publish
AIR apps straight from Flash. I posted the link to get it in the
original post of this thread. It's somewhere in Adobe Labs.
I still haven't gotthe hang of it well enough to compare it to other
wrappers. But, I can say this, at this point I still like Zinc a whole
lot better. The code is easier to learn and it has all the
capabilities (and then some) that AIR does. The only difference is
that you can't preview your files within Flash itself. I'm assuming
SWF Studio is done the same way, but you have to publish your SWF and
then run it through the wrappper software which compiles the app. Zinc
does have built-in debugging capabilities though, so that is cool.
I'm hoping this AIR thing really starts clicking with me soon because I
really want to know how to develop them.

I never touched that. I take it, it is not free? LOL
I know they released the engine part of flex into a semi open source
state. I use Swf Studio from Northcode and in that you have to
initialize the application by putting an initialize line at the top of
the FLA. Do you have to do the same for AIR?
That is what it sounds like to me anyway, from your description.
I would first start off with something simple just to test that
application actually works. Hello World or something.
Compared to the other wrappers you have used, how is AIR?
Hello,
I've been struggling to develop AIR apps with Flash. It doesn't
necessarily have to be done with Flash but I want to know how to do
it with Flash if I need to. Flex has a lot of components and code
hinting which makes things a lot easier so I'm thinking if I can
teach myself how to do it with Flash, then I'll probably have a
better understanding of it.
I've downloaded and installed the Adobe AIR for Flash CS3
(http://livedocs.adobe.com/labs/flex/3/langref/index.html) and I've
also tried using the AIR Panel by jskinner
(http://www.gskinner.com/blog/archives/2007/07/creating_air_pr.html).
I would not recommend trying to install both. After I did they
seemed to conflict with each other and errors occured. I chose to
stick with the Adobe AIR Extension because it allows you to debug a
little better.
So now that I have what I need to create AIR with Flash, I just need
to learn how to code them properly. I tried using some of the source
code from the Flex AS3 Reference
(http://livedocs.adobe.com/labs/flex/3/langref/index.html) but I
can't seem to get anything to work. I know it's probably something
simple that I'm missing but it's a big deal because nothing seems to
work. I can publish AIR files from Flash and install them just fine
but none of the functionality works and I get all kinds of errors if
I debug.
If anyone has any simple example FLAs or some source code, I'd love
to take a look.
Thanks,
Scott
Hello Ty,
Well you've got the basic idea but you're missing a little bit in the
middle. It looks like you may be trying to call certain movie clips
before making them part of an object. What you can do is declare an
object and assign the movie clips and such to that object. Then you
should be able to get better results. Since you said you were
pasting your functions into the class file, it leads me to believe
that you are writing them in the Flash AS panel and testing them and
then cutting and pasting into your class file, right?
I actually started learning classes by doing it that same way but you
will have to edit your code to define objects. It still gets me
sometimes too and it can be very frustrating and abstract to a lot of
people at first. Just remember "everything should be an object" when
programming with OOP.
When you write classes, they create the objects just like how a
builder uses a blueprint to build a house (taken from the book you're
reading "Object Oriented Actionscript for Flash 8" - check page 3).
Try to make yourself understand that relationship before moving on to
anything harder. It will be easier in the end if you do.
I'm still struggling wih this stuff too with AS3 so don't get
discouraged. I was extremely fluent with AS2 but AS3 is kicking my
butt. So maybe we'll be helping each other out here. I've always
been kind of in between when it comes to Flash (I think the new term
for that is a "Devigner". I'm a decent designer but I prefer to do
everything with code and as of the last two or three years, I've
probably grown to be more of a programmer than a designer. In my
job, I definitely do more programming than designing so that's
probably one of the big reasons for that transition.
Thanks Ty,
Scott

Hello Ty,
I basically went the same route you did in developing desktop
applications except I used MDM Zinc. I loved using Zinc and from
what I can tell so far, I still like it better than developing AIR
apps. It may be because I did it for so long and am just used to
it. However, Multi D Media certainly explained their code better
than Adobe has. I still can't get very far in developing AIR apps
with Flash. I know it's supposed to be easier to do it with Flex but
it should still be fairly simple to do with Flash too. You would
just have to spend a little more time developing custom parts and/or
components. Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right places. I've
checked a lot of sites though. I tried using the AS3 reference for
Flex but it wasn't easy to figure it out from that either.

I need some help understanding Classes.
I read upon classes in several books and this is my understanding.
You have bunch of functions you want to put in a class right?
You create a seperate .as file with the name you want to use for the
class.
Then you paste in your functions into that file and surround them like
this.
Class classname {
function classname {}
function nameoffirstusablefunction (
some code
some code
}
}
The classname has to be same name as the .as file and the first
function is ignored in AS2 so you create one with the same name as the
class which is the same name as the .as file and leave it blank.
Then you put in your regular working functions after that.
Ok, I did that but when I build the swf I get an error in the output
window in Flash CS3 that says the class is not defined or something
like that in the .as file. HUH?
I don't understand that, so I just ripped out my functions and out
them back into the FLA file. What I am doing wrong? I will read up
on this later again to see what I am missing but from my understanding
that is how you do classes. What am I missing?
Thanks.
Hello Scott,
Yes, I loaded up on books and have been studying.
Here is what I have:
Object-Oriented ActionScript for Flash 8
Flash 8 ActionScript Bible
ActionScript for Flash 8
To learn AS3 after I get the OOP down in AS2
Object-Oriented ActionScript 3.0
Essential ActionScript 3.0
After looking over the two 3.0 books they both pretty much cover it
all. The OO 3 book covers tricks and insights on differences and
gotcha's while the Essential book fills in the knowledge gaps.
I primarily use the Flash IDE I have both Flash 8 Pro and Flash CS3.
I am more a programmer and tech geek than an artsy type. I have not
gone the Adobe route with wrappers for Flash, instead I went with
Northcode SwfStudio 3.x and have been building apps for Windows.
Apparently Flex is designed for what I do but I have gone the Flash
IDE route and will be designing and coding through that well into the
next few years. Flex will just have to get along without me until I
can no longer do what I do with Flash.
I really like ActionScript and have primarily been focusing on that, I
had to go back to PHP coding for a little but and that was really
strange. ActionScript for me is so much easier but is good to stretch
into other things too every once in while.
My main deal with coding in ActionScript is to create multimedia apps
that connect and interact with web applications using XML and PHP,
MySql. I create membership sites and other marketing type sites but
strangely don't do much flash web design.
My goal is to be able to create my projects without having to study
others code as reference. Be competent in Coding Object Oriented Code
and when my flash wrapper of choice finally is able to use AS3, be
able to follow that into the future. Though for now I am trying to
master AS2 and will be learning AS3 more seriously going into next year.
I am tired of looking at books and doing web searches for code samples
and forum posts on how to do what I want. Having someone else to
bounce off of and have things explained to me from current day ways of
doing things and not posts and articles from 2004 - 2005 era is what I
am looking for now.
I am newbe, moderate level maybe, with gaps in my knowledge. Learning
Classes and OOP is top priority because I am in middle of a personal
project that probably will turn commercial and I am trying to use all
this stuff in that.
Rewriting code to be OO and use classes is my concern right now though
I am having some difficulty implementing classes at the moment for
some reason. I am doing something wrong, so I just converted my so
called classes to regular functions and the code works now. Though I
need to put a lot of things back into Classes and create new ones.
I created seperate .as files and did the surround code with
Class classname {
function classname {}
function nameoffirstusablefunction (
some code
some code
}
}
But I get error in Flash output saying that the class is not defined
or something like that in the .as file. I don't get it.
That is background and what I am doing now. I know enough to get into
trouble and can usually get myself through a working code but it
probably isn't the best way of doing things so I am seriously out to
upgrade my skills.
Thanks Scott

I think this is a pretty small group (just a couple of members). I'd
like to help you out if you have any specific questions I may be able
to answer. I've been working with Flash since 1999 and work as a
Flash Developer in Dallas. I've tinkered with Flex some and am now
trying to focus on AIR development with Flash CS3 and Flex.
One workd of advice I might give to you after reading you post. You
may want to study OOP with AS2 for a little while or jump straight
into AS3. I've been using AS2 since it was announced and the
transition between AS2 and AS3 is not as simple as it was going from
AS1 to AS2. But learn how to code classes and you'll be better off.
AS3 is much more geared for developing in a class-based environment.
It doesn't have to be done that way but it is a lot better.
Thanks!
Scott

Don't have flex and wont be getting it anytime soon since I just
upgraded to Adobe Web Premium.
I want to learn more OOP for AS2 and I am just now learning a bit
about AS3. I began learning AS2 beginning of 2006 and am new still at
AS2 I feel anyway. I am just now learning about classes and want to
learn how to code OO and OOP properly for AS2 so I can take it forward
with AS3 whenever I get into that.
I would like help learning how to code better.
