hi -

thanks scott, alessandro for feedback....

on+off. actually it looks like it will be a monthly column.

not yet, but we're working on a facebook widget version that will of
course access from PC.

the qualcomm/adobe announcement might finally see some real
penetration on verizon... just before they dump qc chips in the move
to LTE?

hmm, good idea... (but dreamhost hosts my blog and its offline right
now. they suck)

Hi Guys,

We're making a flash lite game and we are looking to expand our network
of Flash Lite game developers.

We have a range of character sprites that we want to convert into swf
files. We have a very specific format (walk left, walk right, jump,
crouch, shoot etc) and what we want it somebody to take an existing
library of character images and then take them import them into Flash
based on our format.

It shouldn't be hard. In face it should be fun for somebody wanting to
get into gaming.

If you are interested then let me know and we'll chat some more :))

Ciao,

Dan

Hi All,

Im trying to figure out the code to create a custom tab index ordering, similar
to that used by flash to move between button or input text field instances.

I have several MCs in random x/y positions on stage, I would like to move
between them in a logical order using up, down, left and right.

Ive tried calculating the nearest MC x/y pos, but that can potentially go in zig
zags between the MCs.
Ive tried calculating the angle, so that it moves to the MC with the closest arc
angle, but that can skip MCs that are really close, but at a wider angle than
some far away MCs.
So then I tried using the best angle and the nearest distance, but that seems to
have illogical results.

I also want to avoid hard coding the tab order, as the position of the MCs can
change dynamically on different pages.

Even the default tab order in Flash has some issues, but it seems to work OK
most of the time. Does anyone know the code algorithm used to work out the Flash
default tab order?

Cheers
Paul

forgot about using default focus management. you should better write
your own focus management

Subject: getBytesTotal() on a jpg or png in FL2 for Sony Ericsson
i_craigmile
Send Email Send Email

Hi

I have tested a FlashLite application (that I developed) on various
Nokia phones with no problems. I am now testing a Sony Ericsson W910i.

I have noticed different results (Sony Vs Nokia(and desktop Flash))
for the getBytesTotal() method of a loaded MovieClip. The movieclips
that I am loading are images (jpg).

Here are the results on Sony Ericsson W910i

jpg 1. Size on server=11434; getBytesTotal=> 11538 (104 bytes over)
jpg 2. Size on server=9520; getBytesTotal=> 9624 (104 bytes over)
png 1. Size on server=1611; getBytesTotal=> 12706 (several times bigger)

Here are the results on Nokia 6120c

jpg 1. Size on server=11434; getBytesTotal=> 11434
jpg 2. Size on server=9520; getBytesTotal=> 9520
png 1. Size on server=1611; getBytesTotal=> 1611

I think that the png result (Sony) is giving me the uncompressed size.
The Nokia gives me the actual file size (as seen on the server) for
the same image.

The jpg results (Sony) are only a little over the server file size, so
I don't think they are uncompressed sizes.

The getBytesTotal is used in a lot of preloaders out there. Has anyone
figured this out for Sony FlashLite?

Thanks, Ian

Yes, both phones use the same SIM card and therefore the same network.

Hi

I have some (non-progressive) jpegs that I am trying to load from a
server into a FL2 application on the Nokia 3500.

The jpegs are not progressive and the application works in the CS3
device emulator for the Nokia 3500.

On the actual device, the jpegs will not display. However, PNG's and
SWF's loaded from the server will display.

Has anyone got any jpegs to load from a server? I am wondering id
there is something that I need to do to the jpeg (it was created from
photoshop).

The same application works fine on FlashLite for Nokia 6120, 6267 and
Sony Ericsson W910i.

Any ideas are very welcome.

How big in file size are the jpgs? Flash Lite uses uncompressed image sizes, so
a 50Kb jpg could be 1500Kb uncompressed. If pngs are working, then I must assume
its the file size of the jpg, because pngs are already uncompressed.

In device central, it says the Nokia3500 only has 960Kb of dynamic heap memory,
I feel jpgs are just too much for it to handle.

Hi Ugur,

you probably wont find any midi sound effect libraries. MIDI was
initially conceived as a language for describing a music composition
or performance.

It is certainly possible to generate sound effects using MIDI but most
people who create MIDI are using it for music production not sound
effect creation. The need for MIDI sound effects is only recently
resurfaced due to common use of MIDI in games for phones.

There is also the issue that a sound effect may not sound the same on
different phone MIDI synthesizers, which may discourage some people
from creating MIDI sfx libraries.

Is there a particular sound effect you are looking for?

If you are looking for short sound effects like button clicks, you
might browse through the MIDI files in the Flash Lite 1.1 sound
article I wrote for Nokia awhile back. There is a Flash Lite MIDI
sound browser and many simple 1 note MIDI sounds in the article
download at forum.nokia.

Hi Hayden,

Thanks, there are many MIDI files in your examples. I will check them out.

What I am looking for is very short effects like 'click', 'blip', 'tick'
etc.. I would like to use them on key press.

Can you give me some ideas on how to produce them?

Thanks a lot!

cheers,

Will "SWF Encrypt" encrypt the flashlite(swf) well?
Or is there any alternative I could look to.

Thanks

for "click" and "tick" I would suggest you explore the percussion
sound bank, which contains sounds emulating wooden percussion instruments.

"blip" might be harder as it is more ambiguous as to what you need.

To create MIDI sound effects you need a MIDI sequencer and you need to
understand some basic MIDI editing.

You might also refer to the article I wrote on Flash Lite sound for
Sony Ericsson devices which is more specific to MIDI than the Nokia
article, and has a case study on how I developed MIDI sound effects
for a simple game.

Thanks for the reply.
My concern is the encryption. How do I protect my flashlite work from
the decompiler?

Hi Paul

The jpg file is 7171 bytes (on the server).

Thanks for the tip on the dynamic heap size.
