You know this is a profound discovery.   Normally viruses adapt themselves to one species.   That this H1N1 can be transferred to cats is, in fact, downright scary.   In fact, it makes me way more skeptical about this being a naturally occurring virus.    More later, got to take my mom to catch a ride to bingo.

Avoiding H1N1: wash your hands; don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth; stay home if you’re sick. But what if you happen to be a cat? Since few cats enjoy a 20-second paw wash…the advice? Stay away from people!

According to a press release issued by the American Veterinary Medical Association, a 13-year old tabby in Iowa has tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus–marking the first time a cat has been diagnosed with this strain of influenza. How does a cat get swine flu? Since the cat is exclusively an indoor cat who has zero contact with other animals, it is believed to have caught the virus from one of two members in the household who were sick with H1N1.

The cat joins pigs, turkeys and several ferrets that have been diagnosed with H1N1. Although many assume the opposite, it appears that in general, the disease spreads from people to animals, rather than the other way around.

It’s fascinating how different strains of flu infect a wide variety of animals including seals, whales, horses, tigers, cats, dogs, ducks, and chickens. (And I’m still scratching my head about how a seal gets the flu.) As evidenced in the health blogs of The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, the world of animal flu is a nimble one. When ducks get the flu, they may not show symptoms (lucky ducks!), but the virus replicates itself in their intestinal tracks and is then excreted into the wastewater where it may be a pathway for transmission to other animals (like seals, I suppose). When pigs get the flu, they sneeze, have a fever and stop eating. Because pigs can be infected with both human flu strains and bird strains, they may serve as mixing bowls for new strains.

Companion animals have been known to contract flu from other species: canine influenza (H3N8) originated in horses (a dog with the flu may have a cough, a runny nose and a fever. And did you know you can get a flu shot for your dog?); and cats can get avian influenza (H5N1) from eating birds. But this is the first confirmed case of a cat getting H1N1 from a human.

The symptoms of the cat’s H1N1 were lethargy, loss of appetite and trouble breathing–he had stopped cleaning himself, and also rested by crouching on all four feet rather than sprawling out on his side as usual–a sign of respiratory discomfort. Fortunately, the cat has fully recovered; he was given fluids for dehydration and put on antibiotics to prevent a secondary bacterial infection.

Officials say pet owners should take the same precautions against spreading swine flu to pets as they would with humans. (Again, washing a cat’s paws???) Dr. Ann Garvey, Iowa’s state health veterinarian, said it is not yet known how sick cats or other pets could get from swine flu. “Because we haven’t seen that many cases, it’s difficult to give a blanket assessment on how sick it can make an animal,” she said. It is also as yet to be determined whether or not a companion animal with H1N1 can then infect a healthy person. It serves as a poignant reminder that we really are all part of one big animal family…

Thank you, Lin. It has weakened a little because the Gulf is cooler now, but we still expect a lot of wind and rain tonight. We learned our lesson with Ivan - we have two generators!

Thank you, Peps - I will. I'll probably be without electricity for a day or so but I will call Barb and let everyone know we're OK. It's been downgraded to a tropical storm for the moment because the Gulf is cooling down but we still expect to get a lot of rain and wind from it.

Hurricane "territory"...EAST of Lola...

Just thought I would give you an update from here in Georgetown,
north-central inland Florida....at 0943 EST, it is windy here, with dark clouds.
Humidity is not yet rising (which we expect)...we also have a generator...and we

Keeping our eye on the storm. We have lots of friends on the gulf coast
and parents of friends too. I just read that it is supposed to weaken, I
really hope so.

Hi Carolee

The one thing I know more than anything else about our cats as that they
forgive easily, as long as they know they are loved, wanted, warm and
well-fed. No matter how many times we tread on their tails, feed them late,
shout at them when they do something wrong, they still love us. Love would
have known that she was disabled. She would have known how much time and
love you spent on her to keep her as fit and healthy as possible over her
last year. She would have known that her last months were happy for her
because of you. In the end she would have known that by ending her life in
this world (at a time when she was obviously not as happy and healthy as she
had been) you freed her from more pain and discomfort to live a life of
freedom in another. She would know that it wouldnt be easy for you to let
her go, but that you did it because of your love for her. My guess is that
she won't be far from you right now.

Sounds very nasty, Lola - hope and pray that everyone in its path will be
safe! Good job you have the generators!

Lin

Please keep us in your prayers - would you believe we have a mid-November
hurricane coming at us tonight? We found out after Church tonight that
they've cancelled school Monday and Tuesday - we are out anyway Wednesday
for Veteran's Day - Hurricane Ida is headed straight for the Gulf Coast. It
is expected to be a Category 1 with 75 mile an hour winds when it gets here
early Tuesday morning. We are not worried about flooding but we are worried
about the wind and possible tornados -remember what we went through with
Ivan - we had lost 21 pine trees and had one down on the end of our house.
We went by Winn-Dixie tonight on our way home and stocked up on bread,
water, canned meats and such - in case we lose our electricity (we probably
will). We do have two generators so we will manage. Hurricane season ends
November 30, so we thought we had made it through OK this year. Oh, wel1!
Lola

Oh, Carolee - I wish you were close by so I could give you a hug. It hurts so much, I know - you had such a special relationship with Love and it's so hard not having her with you now. I know how hard it was when my Sam died - I grieved for her almost as if she had been a person. Love knew how loved she was - and is. Please try to take comfort in the fact the you always did the very best for her you possibly could, and you only let her go on because that was the best thing you could do to help her.
We all love you Carolee, and we want you to be comforted.
Love,
 Lola

Your post moved me so much Carolee.

Of course she loved you - she knew you were there. I am sure she will
forgive you as you and she had THE BEST life together. You met each
other didn't you? You loved her all the time she was with you.

* hugs *

Felicia
