Hello everyone,

I recently bought a couple of REX 6000 units off eBay. One of them was fully
functional while
the other had a damaged screen. Upon receiving them, I tried to do a firmware
update on the
fully functional one but the dock --serial model-- batteries went bust in the
process.

Now all I can see when I turn it on is a "Please connect" message that is
followed by a
"Updating firmware" progress bar whenever I place it on the dock.

Also, the day I did the firmware update, I bought a new battery set for the REX
but 2 days
later those batteries are spent!

So I would like to ask a few questions to the people in this group:

1. Have you ever recovered your REX devices from a failed firmware update?
2. If not, do you think it will be possible to swap the screen and motherboard
between them?
3. The above procedure requires some sort of soldering?
4. Someone experienced such a short lifespan on your batteries?

All your comments are appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

I kept copies of some of the Rex 5 and 5001 material several years ago.

I never bothered with the software for the Rex 6000 ,although an easy to use
scientific calculator could have been useful at times only so not to have to
wait to boot the PC.

I have loaded some text on the REX to read, but found the screen too small
for comfort when travelling, e.g. on the train and it was hopeless when on a
stepper or on training bike in the gym. It is excellent for notes which
remained still useful when the contacts and notes on my mobile phone where
limited to 256 characters.

My phone has now replaced my camera, watch, MP3, radio and pda type needs.
With built in FM radio, MP3 and GPS the only problem is batteries flat in 36
hours. The higher resolution makes reading text and web pages easier.

I still like the format of the Rex and batteries lasting 6 months but it is
no longer worth while carrying it. With the Rex 6000 selling for 30EURO it
is hardly worth selling it. In 5 to 10 years it might be a collectorable :)

Hello,

I have a rex pro that someone was kind enough to send to me :)
Not selling it though but you are thinking of getting a new site for REX
stuff?

TOM :
Maybe you want to look for a Rex 6000
Although the REX Pro in my opinion looks better, but the hardware for
the REX 6000 is by far better.
And of course more space and you can even read an ebook on it :p

Hong

Well, what can I say: I could go down to 50EUR, and I can keep the
cradle but I won't use it anymore so I'll simply throw it away - but you

I was actually looking at around USD$30-50 ( minus shipping charges )
for a used unit.
Also the cradle will make the shipping quite high so I would prefer to
have the REX unit only to save on the cost.

Hello,

I noticed the amount of sites that are still alive for the REX 6000 are
going down one by one Can't find most of them anymore.

Currently I run a webhosting company and have been in operation since
2003. Was wondering if anyone is interested in moving those dead
content to an active server. No charges, no banner ads and of course no
pop-ups! I will do it for free if any still have their old content and
are interested.

Will register a domain when I get a reply from this thread.

Hello,

My REX 6000 died today and I am looking for another to replace it.
Does anyone know or are selling theirs at a reasonable price?

The last website that had it in stock quoted me almost USD$200 with
shipping to Singapore...

If you have a REX ( even if its the REX 1, 3, 5000 or the 1mb 6000 ) I
am interested.

Need a working 6000 and wouldn't mind dead ons as well for parts.

Hello,

I´m totally new here in the group and have a big problem. Bought a
Rex5001 and would like to use it, but can´t get any data on it.
I sync my Nokia 6630 and the Clie NX73 via their own conduits with Lotus
Notes 5. Unfortunately Rex only can connect to version 3 or 4.

So my question is: do you have any hints, any suggestions how to get the
Rex sync with LN 5? Or does anyone have any old version 3 or 4, which he
would let me have?

Thanks in advance for your help :) and sorry for my bad English. :(

After awhile to get used to my mobile phone and the strange way it syncs to
Outlook I hit some problems.

Numbers in outlook are county, region and number
The phone can't handle the +1, +44 and +49 so I have to edit them.
My outlook contacts are grouped into several sub folders which the phone's
software ignores but the Rex picks up and I have no way of selecting which
groups to include. The phone has no search for name option and needs to
scroll through all the numbers. This takes forever!
Notes for each contact - like short directions - are picked up by the Rex
but the mobile phone only allows 250 characters.

I have a number of notes in Outlook that I use on the Rex for information.
Some are personal (like policy numbers, account numbers) some are look ups
like metric to imperial conversions, remote access instructions for my
answer phone, prices lists, wanted book lists etc.

The mobile phone has a limit of 250 characters for notes and a very small
amount of memory for the total storage of them. There is no information on
the restrictions in the handbook or on the web site.

So I am continuing to carry the Rex, at least until I can't sync anymore or
I find acceptable work arounds to the contacts and notes on the mobile
phone. The Rex 6000 is faster to enter new appointments (but even that is
too slow) than the mobile phone.

I am looking to upgrade to Office 2007 a second hand XP laptop I have just
got and may sell my old Win98 laptop. I will be getting a Vista mini-PC in
the next couple of months.

I still carry my Rex6000 around with me, but a new mobile phone that
syncs to Outlook with a 3.2Mp camera built in means that instead of
phone + camera + MP3 player + FM radio + Rex I only need one device
and with 2Gb storage a big step up from the previous devices.

I am looking to change my Win98 laptop and hence get WinXp. I do not
know if the Rex 6000 will work with XP. My desktop will mirgrate from
XP soon and the new hardware lacks a serial port. Can the Rex sync
with Office 2007?

The Rex has been so useful over the past 6 or so years but maybe it
has run out against the struggle to keep it working with new hardware
and software.

Does anybody already know whether Rex-5000 also works on Vista. I use

I still carry and use my Rex 6000 almost every day.

Unfortunately, existing software will not synchronize the Reges with
Windows beyond Win9x. (I have one computer dedicated to Win9x legacy
stuff.)

I work in desultory manner towards creating Java code for such
purpose, but I have no intention whatsoever of supporting any
Microsoft applications.

i have been using my rex5 for 10 years and have a spare one and
leather case in case this one is lost. winxp on my toshiba portege
syncs through slipping it into the old style slot on the side. it
was a bit of a challenge figuring out how to get it work and sync. i
may not be able to do it again...lol. rex 5 has been wonderful but
the ability to further move up to office 7 and vista are probably not
in the cards. when my laptop dies.....i guess i'll have to come into
the 21 century myself. if anyone can tell me that it works with
vista and how to connect it....i'll sure give it a try.

You will find your phone much more flexible in the end, and as you say, it is
one less device to carry.

I finaly stopped using my Rex about 1 year ago. It is a changing world, and the
Rex is just left behind. By the way, the problems of using the Rex under XP
with Office 2003 and higher are just too much to deal with. There are no
problems with the phone.

GOod luck.

I may still have the files you need...it may take me some time to find
them...
I had owned 3000, 5000, 5001, and finally 6000's.
It seemed like every time I had to reinstall XP for whatever reason and
updated it with Microsoft that it became more and more dificult to install
my Rex.
I finally gave up and bought an Ipaq..not as small, but much larger memory.

I'll look for the files and burn a disc for you..I'll let you know and then
you can give me your mailing address.
