At everyALA conference for the past 3 years, LITA (the Library & Information Technology Association) has organized and staffed a public-access Internet room for all conference participants. It includes both Windows and Macintosh workstations with direct network connectivity, and allows conference attendees to telnet back to their home systems to check mail, or to "surf the net" with a variety of Internet software programs.
