Aims and scope
World Digital Libraries is an international
peer-reviewed biannual journal. The journal will seek quality research
papers that present original theoretical approaches, as well as experimental
case studies related to digital library development and maintenance and
dissemination of digital information focusing on research and integration
of knowledge at the interface between resources and development. In
doing so, the journal will keep readers abreast with the current developments
in the field. The journal will include articles, reviews, current developments,
and case studies dealing with
§ theoretical
and methodological issues that relate to the interrelationships among electronic
resources management, digital preservation, multiple access, multilinguality,
copyright issues and security aspects;
§ initiatives
taken towards digitization through lucid case studies;
§ current
developments across the globe; and
§ dialogues
between the scientific community and society at large.
The journal will have global coverage with
local focus and will provide its contributors and readers a platform to
share their experiences. It will also facilitate dialogue among the digital
library communities.
Articles and reviews should examine
concepts, analyses, new approaches, and techniques pertaining to this field.
Case studies covering new initiatives, as well as procedural breakthroughs
of important issues in the digital library field would be included. Book
reviews will cover recent books in the field, reviewed by an independent
reviewer.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed using
the criteria of originality, accuracy, and quality of contribution in these
fields. The journal will also provide an update on topical developments
in the field; notes on important breakthroughs; information on forthcoming
conferences, workshops, seminars and relevant events; and highlight activities
of national and international importance in the field.

Gerry, thanks for forwarding this notice to the list. If you don't mind
I'd like to forward your message to the Yahoo group:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Free_MARC_Records/.
This mailing list is devoted to pointing out sites where library catalog
records are located. There are similar sites that provide simultaneous
search engines, but your site has many national libraries not included
in the others.
Please let me know if this is okay with you for me to forward the
message.

Hi Everyone! I was researching MARC records and came across your
newsgroup. I am not familiar with newsgroups (or MARC records yet!),
so please bear with me.
My query, which I hope you can help with... I have an existing
catalog of 30,000+ DVDs which I would like to add MARC records to. I
have the UPC codes, but not much else.
The plan is to build a website and present some DVD data from sites
like Amazon, but also store the MARC records in our own database
(Amazon does not let you store their data).
Can anyone please tell me is there a way for me to match my list of
UPCs to MARC records and capture all 30,000+ records?
I have access to a programmer who is very good (xml, and other
stuff), all we are missing is the knowledge!
Thank you for your assistance!

Please forgive any duplication, as I am sending this message to several lists.
Today I noticed that the University Library Karlsruhe virtual search site (http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/kvk/kvk/kvk_en.html) has now included WorldCat.org in its list of library catalogs for simultaneous searching and downloading.
Two other sites that allow for searching multiple library catalogs simultaneously and downloading MARC records are:

You can contact me off list about Horizon questions. I'm a cataloger
a system administrator for our Horizon ILS. You're problem probably
isn't related directly to the MARC record but how the tags are
indexed and which indexes your HIP is drawing from to point to the
display. We have our display draw from the item record which is
typical. Having two people open in the same record can get
problematic depending on who saves what, when.

500+ Records in NIO’s Institutional Repository
The Institutional Repository of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) Goa, India - http://drs.nio.org - crossed 500 full-text records (Journal articles, conference articles, book chapters, theses, etc) on 1 December 2006 since it’s launching during end March 2006. Within a short span of eight months, there are over 35,000 downloads from over 100 countries. How was this achieved?:
124 articles published by NIO’s authors during the year 2006 are up. Thanks to the authors who resourced these. Many of them have learnt the art of self-archiving (uploading on DRS) and few sought help of the library.
Other articles range for the period 2000-2005. NIO library obtained permissions from Indian publishers to upload these. These have been uploaded after scan and OCR. This has helped increasing the size of DRS.
Very little portion of this does include grey literature (theses, reports, etc.).
DRS is one among the very few institutional repositories in the field of Marine Sciences all over the world.
The contents of DRS is harvested by: OAIster (Global harvester for archives), Google Scholar, Avano (Marine and aquatic science harvester from France) and CASSIR (Indian archives harvester at IISc, India).

You can contact me off list about Horizon questions. I'm a cataloger a
system administrator for our Horizon ILS. You're problem probably isn't
related directly to the MARC record but how the tags are indexed and
which indexes your HIP is drawing from to point to the display. We have
our display draw from the item record which is typical. Having two
people open in the same record can get problematic depending on who
saves what, when.

I am Marcos Paulo, paraibano/Brasil librarian, am formed by the UFPB and would like to know as I can improve my studies in the exterior? Legally clearly.
Desire to improve my English and to increase my knowledge in the biblioteconomia, my work of course was in Technology for libraries.
Ah, library catalog system glitches. It’s like telling
old war stories.
I’ve been told by the head cataloger that occasional
she and the former assistant cataloger would have the same record open in their
respective Horizon logins and one of them would have the local call number and
the other wouldn’t. And then, randomly, sometimes it would just come
back.
That and our iPac occasionally decides that you don’t
need the local call number for certain items. And no matter what you do, even
deleting and recreating the record, won’t bring the call number back. It’s
in the MARC record, but it doesn’t display in the public catalog. We
apparently used to call SirsiDynix (then whomever) to have them corrected on a
case by case basis, but they could never tell us why it was happening and what
we could do to prevent it.
I get to pick up the torch of vendor relations and begin to
sort this stuff out again, to see if there’s a solution. I’m not
sure what kind of ocean I’m going to be diving into. If anyone has any
advice I’ll be happy to take it.
Hello Brandon
Just in case you hadn't guessed, this is a very quiet group!
I haven't used Horizon but I have used about 6-7 other systems over the
years and I can safely say that every system I use has some sort of
weirdness. The one I'm using at the moment, Workflows, hasn't been set up
properly for records of electronic items in the fixed fields and insists on
putting extra fields in for serials! At least I can leave them blank. I keep
speaking to the manager about it, but nothing is going to happen soon. And
that is suppose to be a native marc system. On the last system I used,
FIRST, the display of marc tagging when cataloguing was always strange
because it wasn't native marc. Marc was just thrown in after they made it up
because they were asked to:
650 | 0 |a | Aboriginal Australians
650 | _ |z | New South Wales
650 | _ |z | Sydney
650 | _ |x | History
To a non-cataloguer it looks as if the tag has to be repeated for each
subfield......
Do you feel up to trying to describe what you system is doing?
Cheers
Jules

Is it the “Date time stamp error”
where if you edit an authority record before you save your bib record you have
to close the bib (without saving) then reopen it to finish?
Or is it the maddening deletion of your 430
entry in each series authority after you changed it from a 130 and added a
title/author 100 field? (Dynix always asked if you
wanted to save the old entry as a “see” reference. Horizon doesn’t
ask – it just wipes it out without asking!)
Or is it having the system shut down on
you when you do something it doesn’t like (but you haven’t a clue
what it was)?
Or is it one of many other things I have
not listed?
BTW – our assistant director for technical
services is in Utah
this week learning about the new Horizon update that takes care of many bugs
they had fixes for but didn’t tell us about!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this group. I'm in library
school (first
semester) and also learning cataloging at the Western
Reserve
Historical Society.
I'm wondering how many of you work in libraries that use the Horizon
automation system. We have some crazy weirdness and I'd love to find
out if the problems we have are normal.
I'll lurk for now and once I have a feel for the group I'll try to

Does any one know whether there's any MARC rule/standard as to whether carriage returns are allowed in any MARC tag? Specifically, I'm referring to tag 520 (Summary).
Thank you.
