I have uploaded the Envisat images for 3 Feb 2012 which are similar to the Metop
which has been uploaded today.

Pixel info data from the Meris RR gives the Zonal and Meridian wind which
someone may be able to comment on.

The images are combined into a pdf file.

DDS reception halted here last evening Feb 3 after 20:08 Dutch time.
Cannot get lock on transponder anymore.
We did have snow yesterday but my dish is free of snow and Eumetcast is still
receiving.

Can anyone confirm or should I swap my LNB for a spare one ?
Not a nice job at -5 degrees C currently !

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

Thanks for confirming Karel,

Frascati uplink station is having snowy conditions:

And Kiruna uplink is experiencing -25 to -32 degrees C at this moment:

Let us hope they don't have to do outside repairs !

These satellite stations must need better protection against the weather!
It seems that every time you /really/ need the weather data, it could be
down because of bad weather at the uplink station! Ironic! <G>

(Especially as the folk near Kiruna build an Ice Hotel every year, so the
cold is hardly a novelty for them!)

John,

XP is OK for many home computing tasks and has been a most successful
OS. My Eumetcast receiving PC still runs it and has been in continuous
operation for over five years. But my main PC runs Win 7, which I find
much more pleasant to use than XP. It is more secure, more resistant to
badly-behaved programs, multi-tasks better, and hardly ever crashes. I
prefer the UI over that of XP.
Windows 8 seems to be another bird altogether, although I have had no
experience with it so far (waiting for the beta to be issued). Win 7 has
been such a success and has only been out a couple of years, so there
will be little reason or appetite for switching. From what I have read,
there are few changes of substance, and some (like the UI change) which
may be unpopular. We'll have to wait and see.
I'd like to continue using XP on my receiving PC on the 'if it ain't
broke, don't fix it' principle, but when Microsoft withdraws support,
that will not be possible for long. I have to say that I am broadly in
agreement with the writer of the article you referenced.

Best regards - Alan S

We have been enjoying two or three days of lovely blue skies and sunshine here
in N. Wales while the warm and the cold air battle it out. Current images show
Northern England, the very south west and the whole of Wales as the jam in the
weather sandwich. Not a sign of snow so far in our area but TV reports suggest
grey skies, snow and unpleasant travelling conditions in south east and southern
England and rain in Ireland. Quite cold here, though, temperature not yet above
zero today.
Our satellite imagery gives us a ring-side seat at this rather interesting
contest between the warm and moist Atlantic air and the cold continental air.

Hi Alan,

Well, since my XP EUMETCast (only) single system seems to keep going
without any updates these days - or the odd one every now and again when I log
on for SatSignal updates, shouldn't it go on for ever?

It seems to me that the big push to combine 'everything' - TV, Internet,
smart phone, tablet etc, etc in one box or on one operating system(?) which
appears to be gaining strength - whether the public want it or not - just
breeds more and/or parallel operating systems?

I'm not into modern gizmos so haven't a clue about what's going on.

Regards,
John.

All,

Of interest to us all I suspect.

An intensive, two-day test of the third Meteosat Second Generation

the
satellite at a manufacturing facility in France. The test was a milestone

Hi John,

If one does not use a computer for Internet browsing and similar stuff,
running without updates (which are normally security related) is quite
practical. I disable my anti-virus when running only normal
Eumetcast-related programs. But that does not apply to a machine that is
at risk from normal activities, including Internet, downloading
software, etc.

The 'big push' as you term it, is at base a desperate effort to
continue to invent new reasons to sell computers and associated
gadgetry. I don't want combined PCs, televisions.. games machines, etc,
prefer them separate and they don't get so outdated that way. I'm not
into gadgets either and that is the focus of a big push. But then, I'm
not into the mobile phone craze either. Age, I guess!

Best regards - Alan S

Subject: ANN: 3 New Modules on African Satellite Meteorology from COMET
gm8arv
Send Email Send Email

Folks,

I have received the following from COMET:

_________________________________________________
The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of three modules
for the ASMET (African Satellite Meteorology Education and Training)
project. ASMET produces online and CD-based learning modules that teach
African forecasters how to enhance their forecasts by making better use of
meteorological satellite images and products. The modules were produced
by the ASMET team, which consists of meteorology instructors from the
South African Weather Service (Pretoria) and the Regional Training Centers
in Kenya and Niger. EUMETSAT provides project management and funding,
while The COMET^® Program provides design and production services.

For more information about ASMET, please visit
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/communities/asmet/

The three new modules include:**

   * *Satellite Precipitation Products for Hydrological Management in
Southern Africa*, which introduces a variety of meteorological and
hydrological products that can improve the quality of heavy rainfall
forecasts and assist with hydrological management during extensive
precipitation events in Southern Africa. Among the products are the
satellite-based ASCAT, SMOS, and ASAR GM soil moisture products and the
hydro-estimator. The products are presented within the context of a case,
the flooding of South Africa's Vaal Dam region in 2009/2010. The module is
available at
     http://www.meted.ucar.edu/asmet/so_africa/

   * *Flooding in West Africa*, which explores the rainy season in Sahelian
West Africa. The season extends from June to September and is tied to the
position of the intertropical front. During this period, mesoscale
convective systems (MCSs) often produce significant rainfall that can lead
to flooding. This module examines an extreme flooding event that occurred
in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from 31 August to 1 September 2009. Learners
assume the role of forecaster, assessing meteorological conditions to see
if an MCS will develop that can lead to heavy rain and flooding. They
follow a forecast process that emphasizes the use of satellite data,
standard surface and upper-air charts, and model output. The forecast
process is tied to a conceptual model of the key features that drive
convective activities in West Africa. The module is available at
     http://www.meted.ucar.edu/asmet/w_africa/

   * *Drought in East Africa*, which examines the 2009 drought in the
Greater Horn of Africa (GHA), focusing on conditions in Kenya. The module
begins by reviewing drought conditions in the years leading up to 2009.
From there, it examines the seasonal climate forecast for the beginning of
2009 and what it portends. Satellite products are used to study rainfall
performance throughout the year and its impact on the drought situation.
Finally, the module describes the climate oscillations that can impact
drought in the GHA and identifies patterns that were present in 2009 and
contributed to its severity. By the end of the module, weather
forecasters and students should have a better understanding of drought and
the tools available for its early detection and monitoring. The module is
     available at http://www.meted.ucar.edu/asmet/e_africa/
_________________________________________________

I hope you find these modules useful

Cheers,
David

Mike, on the French group, I believe that one person is using a standard

Dale,

Only Metop-A provides full world-wide data. It's call "FRAC" on the CLASS
archive. Other satellites only download data when within range of a
ground station ("HRPT"), or when a regional recording is specifically
commissioned and downloaded ("LAC"). The Metop satellites have a
full-orbit on-board recording and download capability. I think the names
are right, but it's been awhile since I used that excellent facility.

Cheers,
David

Hi guys, anyone know if there is a programme in existance that will enable me to
join seperate Envisat Images into one picture as we do in Metop, I have looked
at VISAT software but cannot find any way of doing this, anyone got any
suggestions, all comments appreciated, many thanks regards to all. Mike G4CFZ.
