Did anyone record this, or is there an online version somewhere?

I looked without success.

Thanks,

All,

For those who didn't see the forward posting on rig-l, the full report of
the NOAA N' 'mishap' - bit of an understatement there(?), has been published and
can be found at the following link:

_http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/65776main_noaa_np_mishap.pdf_
(http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/65776main_noaa_np_mishap.pdf) .

Warning - it's very long.

Regards,
John Tellick.

David and All,

Yes, I recorded it and yes it is available on-line if you use the link I
provided.

But, dare I say the programmes write up on the ESA TV website didn't quite
match up with the reality(?), - or vice versa, I thought.
Rather disappointing?

Regards,
John.

John,

I looked on the Web site and I couldn't find the program online. I
couldn't even find the PDF description! The link
http://television.esa.int/photos/MTTV2004.pdf appears to be broken.

The page: http://television.esa.int/sche.cfm?nrm=0 doesn't show a PDF
file for this broadcast.

Could you please remind of the link for access to a video replay?

Thanks,
David

My original reply to this notification went astray in email glitch:

It is remarkable how all the major disasters of recent year (Challenger,
Chernobyl, Spirit of Free Enterprise, Piper Bravo ... etc) have been
attributable to organisational factors - bad management mainly - rather
than technical problems as such. Now the same again for NOAA N'. I write as
a completely disinterested social scientist, of course.

I can't find any "movie" files for the Prog - yet, on the ESA Site! maybe
one will be put up later. The only page on their site for MSG1 is below, where
are 7 movies files on the MSG story. Although I DID record the Prog (twice)
I am trying work out how to get the Video/Sound from the VCR to the HD !!

Sorry about the LONG Address, that is what I copied, and does work.

Cheers, Adrian

Oppsss.. the address was altered in Yahoo - what I sent did work before I
sent it, now the address is different to which I have received back. Sorry!

Try this:-

_http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.html_ (http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.html)

Then on the left there is the Multimedia under that there is ESA Multimenia
Gallery click on that - a new page comes up - on the left click video then
in the search - enter MSG there should be 7 or 8 Movie files. Under each
Picture there the Camera {movie) click on that, and the movie will run... Res
is
not very good at full screen.

Hope this works after all that... !!!

Cheers, Adrian

            APT STATUS REPORT -- 11th October 2004
               ===============================

Satellite Frequency (MHz) Status Image Quality

   NOAA 12 137.500 on good
   NOAA 14 137.620 off
   NOAA 15 137.500 off see Note 3.
   NOAA 17 137.620 on good

NB. There are no Russian Meteor or Okean satellites transmitting or able
to transmit APT.

CHANGES SINCE LAST REPORT.
None.

THIS WEEK'S POSSIBLE EVENTS.
None expected.

NOTES.

1. NOAA 9 was permanently deactivated some years ago and is tumbling
freely. Unfortunately it has a sporadic carrier on 137.500 (varies quickly
according to orientation) and can cause interference to NOAA 12 and
NOAA 15.

2. NOAA 16's APT transmission system failed a few months after launch.

3. Due to a NOAA 12/15 VHF (137.500) conflict, NOAA 15 will be switched off
from 19th September, 22.00 UTC until 20th October, 18.00 UTC.

LAUNCHES.

The launch of Sich-1M will be NET November 2004.
This project has been about for at least 5 years so I suggest we don't hold
our breath. Thanks to Ian Deans for providing this information.

NOAA N launch NET 12th February 2005.
NOAA N' launch.....TBA.

       DIGITAL STATUS REPORT -- 11th October 2004
          ===================================

CHANGES SINCE LAST REPORT.
None.

THIS WEEK'S EVENTS.
None expected.

  Satellite Frequency Mode Remarks
                           (MHz)
NOAA 12 1698.0 HRPT Good signal.
NOAA 14 1707.0 HRPT No data (see note 5)
NOAA 15 1702.5 HRPT* Backup channel, weaker signal
NOAA 16 1698.0 HRPT* Good signal (see note 7)
NOAA 17 1707.0 HRPT* See note 6.
Feng Yun 1C 1700.4 CHRPT See note 8.
Feng Yun 1D 1700.4 CHRPT Good signal.
Seastar 1702.5 SeaWifs signal OK
                                          encrypted

NOTES.

1. At the NOAA 17 frequency of 1707 MHz occasional interference may be
expected from NOAA 14 at latitudes above 80 degrees. Erratic behaviour of
the inactive NOAA 9 also has proven to be a source of interference at higher
latitudes. NOAA 9 follows a similar track to 17. Recent reports suggest
that this erratic behaviour is no longer being seen. My thanks to F. Valk
for keeping us up to date with this problem.

2. If you have a good LNA and analogue decoder (Timestep for example)
all satellites with "Good signal" or better can already be received using
a 1.5M helical beam (RIG Journal 64) or a small dish (60 to 80 cm) with
helical feed.

3. * These satellites have channel 3A/B which allows the composition of
almost true-colour images of daylight passes using R3G2B1
colour scheme. For more info on colouring see RIG Journal 69.

4. ~ 10 Channel imager, use colour scheme R1G9B7 or R1G2B7 for
daylight passes to get near true colour images.

5. It is believed that during a test to switch off and then back on the
NOAA 14 AVHRR scan mirror motor that the motor stalled.
NOAA have confirmed that there are currently no plans to try and
restart the stalled motor. There is no imagery available.

6. Problems have developed with STX-3 (1707 MHZ). Power has dropped from
approx. 8W to about 2.4W resulting on a greatly reduced signal strength.

7. On Friday 19th September 2003 NOAA 16 developed AVHRR synch. problems
similar to those on NOAA 14 (and previously NOAA 15).
Since then reports have been mixed. Some periods of good data, some
     poor.

8. Although all channels are functioning on Feng Yun 1C, the image is
not synchronised so the scan line is distorted.
This results in having the edge of the earth, or at least the scan
line, in the centre of the image.

... and we wonder why the cost of living continues to sky-rocket so, but
get this one ...

When Hurricane Andrew flatten part of Florida back in 1992, I am
reliably informed that Insurance premiums did not go up that high in
Florida after Andrew, but out here in the Caribbean ours increased by 2
and 3 times - it is only in the last few years that they have come back
down - well, I guess once again we will now have to pay heavily for
Florida again (notwithstanding the fact that Grenada, Jamaica, Cayman
and Haita have also been badly affected this year too, their costs will
not get near to what the Florida/USA costs will be). The re-insurers'
philosophy seems to be a simple 'Peter pays for Paul' routine.

The thing is, and this is my main point by analogy to what's been said
here already, the cost could be much, much lower if the buildings were
built properly especially for the people who doggedly still want to live
on the coast, knowing well the risk involved but ignore the building
codes. When I look at the how most buildings at put together in the USA
(just watch Extreme Home Make-over, etc.), its no wonder that a Category
1 hurricane or even a Tropical Storm can do so much damage. We in the
(English Speaking) Caribbean build mainly using reinforced concrete and
roofs designed to withstand all but the highest winds, yet we pay
through our ears for insurance, etc.

Right, that's my morning epistle - now, I feel a little better, even
though its not going to change anything.

David,

Sorry for the delay.
The link I gave (I see) was for the programing transmission schedule over a
couple of days:
_http://television.esa.int/default.cfm_
(http://television.esa.int/default.cfm) #
If you go there now, it has moved on.

But there are links in the Video Archive and Previous transmission pages
such as:

Which leads to:

Replay 2: Metosat and TV weather forecasting ESA TV Exchanges
Please note the EbS downlink details below
This TV Exchange visits the UK Met Office in London and some of the British
broadcasters who use its services. Weather prediction has become more
reliable over the years. Our understanding of climatic phenomena has also
greatly
improved. Powerful computers now crunch vast quantities of data allowing a
variety of short to medium term forecasts.
Weather bulletins have become one of the most watched TV programmes around
the world. The data provided by weather centres like the Met Office is often
'dressed up' for television.
Earlier this year, the first of a second generation of Meteosat satellites
renamed Meteosat-8 once in orbit, started routine operations under the
auspices of Eumetsat, Europe's organisation for the exploitation of
meteorological
satellites. The first MetOp satellite will be launched next year. It will not
only image the planet, but its other instruments will take temperature
readings through the atmosphere, look at ocean surface winds and other aspects
of
the atmosphere, giving better information to feed into the computer models.
These improved satellites will allow long-term weather forecasts (beyond
five days) and better short term forecasts of extreme weather situations.
Today's transmission features how better satellite data also lead to better TV
weather forecasts.
The script will be on-line as a PDF document under
http://television.esa.int/photos/MTTV2004.pdf
A Media Player File for preview is on line under
This ESA TV Exchanges feed is transmitted by the European Commission's
"Europe by Satellite" (EbS) service. You can find the complete transmission
schedule and download scripts and shot lists, also for ESA TV items, from the
EbS
Web site at http://europa.eu.int/comm/ebs/schedule.cfm
More backgroud information can be found on:
_http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/MSG/index.html_
(http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/MSG/index.html)
But I see the media player link does not exist.

John.

When they issued that "page" the Media Player File for preview ... should
have been deleted from the template.... There was NO Movie file made.. Pity,
maybe ESA might do one from their Tape and put it on the Archive page. I DID
ask them...

You could! but why would you want to ??
EMI paint is used to create EMC shields especially in plastic boxes,
but as the RX2 works fine as a bare board out of a case I don't
think it'll make any difference.

Hi Simon,

It's always a good idea to use screened cable even if the audio is fairly
high level ie 0db. Single screened or bought in mono audio cable would be
fine.

Spray on nickel coating is available from several stockists in the UK (eg
Farnell 521-450, try www.farnell.com they have a US connection) have so I
guess Digikey or similar would stock it. Remember to attach a ground cable
to a tag and spray over it so that the coating is actually grounded.

Cheers, Guy

Something strange happened on the sun last week: all the sunspots
vanished. This is a sign, say forecasters, that solar minimum is coming
sooner than expected.

To follow a discussion with David Taylor on the matter (Digest 124 of Sept.
22), I made many tests to improve the accuracy of the pictures and at last
got very good results... with some cares:

Using GeoSatsignal to remap (Plate-carree projection) the area of interest
and limiting the portrayed surface to a square of say 600 x 600 km at
latitudes up to 50 degrees and up to 1000 x 1000 km in the tropical belt,
the jpg picture may match perfectly with the 3D tiles providing the
"georeferences" are marked very carefully. Avoid to adjust the picture
"skin" to the 3D "skeleton" with the appropriated controls: when you improve
a zone, you deteriorate the others.
The best way to obtain a near perfect matching seems to take the corners (up
right and down left) of the image as reference points and to choose a tile
portion slightly larger than the remapped image.

I obtained impressive 3D pictures from HRV pictures of the South and
South-East Africa and Sahara. With HRIT images, a very nice picture of the
Sinaï . Thanks to Met-5 I got also impressive pictures of the Himalaya
mountains and Tibet.
Unfortunately, my connection to the Net being limited to 50 Kbytes/s fot the
moment, I cannot reasonably show pictures and moreover animations.
But I suggest you to easily create and enjoy these fascinating scenes.

(Pse see also Ton Lindemann's article in RIG 73, page 67)

Note: Nice images may also be obtained using high resolution Modis pictures,
but of course matching may be difficult - even impossible - and limited to
relatively small areas located in the center of the scan. Could the
obliquity corrector of HRPT-Reader be used to "remap" these pictures?

All,

I have been informed by EUMETSAT that they have undertaken tests using the
TechniSat SkyStar 2 card for reception of the C-band EUMETCast service -
instead of the recommended BroadLogic _V@BOX_ (mailto:V@BOX) 2030.

Results have proved that the SkyStar card 'works perfectly with the
recommended front end California Amplifier Mod. 140.105-1 (see attached TD 15

This is good news since the SkyStar card is much cheaper and more easily
available.

John,

I was always sure about this, but was never able to verify it
due to lack of equipment in C band. It's good to know that
EUMETSAT tested this, as standardization in the receiving
station definitely doesn't hurt. We've seen enough issues with
the SkyStar2 drivers in the past, and I am sure we don't want to
run in to similar issues with other cards!

    Hi Simon,

MG Chemicals makes that, unfortunately I don't remember the
exact item number. I think you should be able to get it from the
US, we can get it here in Canada.

Hi Luca,

Good to hear from you again.
Re. the above, keep up the good work.

Regarding your comments on EUMETCast equipment standardisation, I agree.
I still have been unable to get an answer as to why Telespazio chose the
BroadLogic card to undertake the C-band tests when the Technisat SkyStar card
had already proved itself.

Something to do with being Italian?!
No - I didn't say that!
