The Steam Engineering Team at Valve Software, creator of Half-Life and
Half-Life 2, is hiring programmers to help expand our industry-leading
online gaming platform, one of the biggest online services in the
world.

Steam gained an early head start in the online gaming world. We're
now working to aggressively extend our lead. Here's a partial list of
what we're actively working on:

- Our geographically distributed content delivery system already
makes us one of the largest consumers of net bandwidth in the world,
and we plan on aggressively increasing the size of our user base and
the number of products we distribute. We're working on a number of
technologies for managing all that content, including peer to peer
distribution and streaming content.

- Steam already includes a rich set of community features,
including in-game instant messaging. We're actively expanding our
community offerings, and working to integrate them much more tightly
into our games.

- We provide a sophisticated system for detecting and preventing
cheating in our online games.

- We're exploring a variety of new business and publishing models,
including non-traditional purchase models and a comprehensive range of
payment options.

- We have a huge, very active user base, with millions of unique
users per month, and hundreds of thousands of active concurrent users
at all times. Obviously, we spend a lot of time working on very
large, very high performance database and networking systems.

Job requirements:

At Valve, we believe that smart programmers can do anything. If
you're a good enough programmer, we don't care what specific knowledge
you have: we're confident that you can learn what you need to succeed
here. By the same token, if you're a mediocre programmer, it doesn't
matter how much you know: Valve isn't the right place for you.
Everyone at Valve is at the top of their field; you should be also.

Your accomplishments should be appropriate for your industry
experience. This means that if you're a new college graduate, you
should have written some impressive applications in your spare time.
If you've been in the industry for ten years, you should have played a
key role in the development of one of the top products in your market.

We use C++ here. You should have strong experience with C/C++ or a
related language.

Valve has a very flat organizational structure, with very little
formal management.

To succeed here, you should be able to work independently.

Although none of the above are required, they are bonuses:

- Being an avid gamer. Although this isn't a game development
position, Valve is first and foremost a gaming company, and gaming is
an important part of our culture.

- Experience with networked code, including peer to peer
networking, instant messaging, and online gaming.

- Experience with writing large distributed server-side applications.

About Valve:

Founded in 1996, Valve is widely recognized as a leader within the
gaming industry. Its two flagship releases Half-Life and Half-Life 2
have both received numerous Game Of The Year awards, and have been
best-sellers. Valve enjoys an almost-unique level of financial
autonomy which allows us to take risks and develop new technologies
that are beyond the reach of all but a few game companies.
