Normal background in my home and the general areas I've tested range between 8-24 CPM typically, about 14 CPM is the average, using a pretty new Radalert 100 so I would say that is high. I live in Western NY state, and we're sitting atop Devonian black shales, so frankly I expected higher. kWhere do you live? I would expect those numbers in Arizona (according to memory and a map from USGS or other agency I looked at a year or so ago) from all of the past testing that has gone on there. For comparison, I get in the 400s on a jet liner flight or from the carnotite sample (Uranium ore) we have in the minerals lab at school.

Interesting document on locating sources.
www.deseducation.org/do_download.asp?did=4812
It's amed at UK educational establishments but is interesting. Nice pics etc. I
like the 4mm "banana" plug with a Ra226 tip. Really bad practice and just goes
to show you should test everything. I have examples of several of the sources
shown.

my russian RKSB 104, double tube  makes 20 Cliks in about 30 sec. This is equal to 20 microRem/h    Your count seems to be normal but depends on sensibility of your tube.

Digidose DD-100 and DD-200 devices, I believe, lose their programming when the battery dies.  I'm not certain about the DD-300 devices.

I have a DR-200, which should program your Digidose device.  It will require a fresh 3.6v battery.

Let me know if you're interested.

This LENi was used every day in a scrap yard testing oil pipes for radium deposits. After 2 solid years, it cam in with a popped pancake probe tube. Obviously the user took good care of his precious LENi Pro ( NOT!).

After a new tube and a checkout ( and external cleanup) it went right back into service looking and working like new.

Keep those LENi's handy....

That looks like the same basic circuit the single tubed Ebay DRSB-01 has (and about half the cost and it is a completed unit).  If you're lucky, you'll end up with the "fat" tubed one with at least double the sensitivity.

What digidose, I had a DD-300 for quite some time.

It took a 3 volt lithium AA battery.  Displayed Rate and accumulated dose.

Shortcommings though, if the battery died and was not replaced quickly, it would lose it's programming rendering it useless.  Also the software runs on linux, and a special reader is needed.

Only sensitive to gamma.

Neet geiger counter/dosimeter.

Question,

Building an electronics goldmine gm counter versus building a LEni, how much more difficult?  Obviously some basic metal working skills would be needed, however it appears one would need to fabricate a case for the goldmine gm counter...

This thing has 8 glass Geiger tubes inside, type CK1049. These are the longer ones, and pretty sensitive. Wired in two

banks of 4 tubes, one bank on each side of the machine.

The left hand bank of tubes makes the center zero meter move to the left, the other bank moves the needle to the right.

With practice, it can home in on a gamma source just like a compass. Neat concept.

Masterful piece of detective work!

Count time is probably the integration time between readings- longer more accurate; shorter - quicker update but not as accurate.

This time I'm writing to report a partial victory. I got the software to work. Actually all 3 different versions that I have work OK now. The problem had nothing to do with the OS or architecture: the problem was that the two computers where it was crashing, had NO SERIAL PORTS whatsoever. And even though the IR adapter is connected to the USB port, it looks like the software does some checks on serial ports, and finding none available, it crashed. Now I installed a virtual serial port driver, and the program works flawlessly. I can read/write the settings, and download the history. The IR adapter (iRmate 410W) works great.

Now to the bad news. I enabled the "measurement mode" and the "automatic calibration". And now I am finally able to switch between CPS and uR/h with the MODE button. But there are some problems...
1) If I try to switch back to the "locked in uR/h" mode, by disabling the "measurement mode" option, it gets locked into CPS mode. There's no way to lock it back into uR/h mode. It's either unlocked, or locked into CPS mode. This is not a big problem, but I wonder why.
2) While the unit icon still says "uR/h", it is actually showing the reading in uSv/h (1/100 of the actual value). Right here on my desk, yesterday it was showing 0088, now it's showing 00.86. Any way to get back the proper unit? This IS a problem for me.
3) The auto calibration... how do I know if it works? How do I change the auto calibration frequency?
4) In the report it makes when I download the history, I can read the following:
Count time 1s - off
Count time 2s - on
Count time 4s - off
What exactly is that count time? Might that affect the "stickiness problem" I have? How can I change it?

This time I'm writing to report a partial victory. I got the software to work.
Actually all 3 different versions that I have work OK now. The problem had
nothing to do with the OS or architecture: the problem was that the two
computers where it was crashing, had NO SERIAL PORTS whatsoever. And even though
the IR adapter is connected to the USB port, it looks like the software does
some checks on serial ports, and finding none available, it crashed. Now I
installed a virtual serial port driver, and the program works flawlessly. I can
read/write the settings, and download the history. The IR adapter (iRmate 410W)
works great.

Now to the bad news. I enabled the "measurement mode" and the "automatic
calibration". And now I am finally able to switch between CPS and uR/h with the
MODE button. But there are some problems...
1) If I try to switch back to the "locked in uR/h" mode, by disabling the
"measurement mode" option, it gets locked into CPS mode. There's no way to lock
it back into uR/h mode. It's either unlocked, or locked into CPS mode. This is
not a big problem, but I wonder why.
2) While the unit icon still says "uR/h", it is actually showing the reading in
uSv/h (1/100 of the actual value). Right here on my desk, yesterday it was
showing 0088, now it's showing 00.86. Any way to get back the proper unit? This
IS a problem for me.
3) The auto calibration... how do I know if it works? How do I change the auto
calibration frequency?
4) In the report it makes when I download the history, I can read the following:
Count time 1s - off
Count time 2s - on
Count time 4s - off
What exactly is that count time? Might that affect the "stickiness problem" I
have? How can I change it?

I would like to write some software to interface with my various counters. I've
interfaced them to my PC's serial port using the MAX233 mods from the file
section, and this works great with the RADDOS software.

My question: Does anyone know the specs to use to read the serial port data?
PERL or VB, preferably.

Cheers,
Eric

Computer architecture plays a role in how a given OS will work with software.  Some, and I suspect most, software companies will not support use of their software on a Mac computer running Windows.

I tried that version, that too crashes. Is there a place to download other versions to try?
It can't be the IR drivers, as I said the program crashes even with no IR attached and with or without drivers installed; and by the way, that very same IR adapter works flawlessly on my father's computer, on the very same OS version.

The only commonality between the crashing PCs is that they use AMD processors instead of Intel; can that make a difference?
I'd like to remind that the program crashes AS SOON as launched. Nothing appears on screen, it just crashes, immediately, and consistently. The PC still works fine, just the PM software crashes.

Polimaster replied that "our software must work, so it must be your OS". Woah, thanks a lot.
