Jim,

I am so sorry that I missed the meeting this week.  I worked the election on Tuesday and was there from 5 am to 11 pm.  I was in a daze all Wednesday, but still planned on attending.  Somehow that plan left my mind!  Hope to be in a better mind set for the next meeting.  Susan

On Saturday 7 Nov, I am scheduled to conduct a half day class on DNA for
Genealogy at the Ashburn Stake (LDS) Family Fair. I have a PowerPoint
presentation on DNA from there that I plan on presenting at our meeting
tomorrow night. If you have questions about basics of DNA, this would
be a good time to ask.

Seven pm, Dolly Madison Library

Special announcement to SIG members.

A few months ago, we spent the entire session on the basics of Y-DNA.
Since that time I have had questions about mtDNA. This would be a good
time to not only introduce mtDNA but also review all types of DNA, its
testing, and applications.

Note: this will be our last meeting at Dolly Madison library since it
will be closing later this month for renovations. Future meetings are
planned for the Kilmer Middle School, 8100 Wolf Trap Rd., Vienna VA. We
will continue with the first Wednesday of each month.

Hi, Jim,

• I am interested in the SIG group and was one of the three who
attended the Sept meeting.

• I missed yesterday's meeting due to a conflict.

• Other than occasional tutorials, I might suggest asking the
'regulars' to give a presentation on what they are doing and how it
fits into the genetic/genealogy picture. Your discussion of the
sleuthing about the Logans, and Marie Rundquist's sleuthing about her
Canadian ancestry are cases in point. There are other local folks who
might give good presentations, too. Just because someone has delivered
one a few years back doesn't mean that they have not achieved success
in the interim or they may have taken a turn in another promising
direction in their work.

Greetings:

If you received this email, it is because you ar on the mail list for
the GenGen-NV group at Yahoo. This mail list was established to support
the Surname Projects and Genetic Genealogy SIG of the Fairfax
Genealogical Society. I would appreciate a response from each of you
indicating your level of interest and providing suggestions for future
courses of action.

Furthermore, our last meeting was held on the 2nd of September at the
Dolly Madison public library in McLean VA with a change of venue from
Tysons Corner. Only three persons in were attendance. I would like to
know why.

Please answer the following:

1) Are you interested in future meetings of the SIG. If not, I can
remove you from the mail list.

2) If you did not attend the last meeting, was it because of lact of
interest in the announced subject? Conflict is schedule? Went to the
wrong location? Difficulty of getting to Dolly Madison? Other?

3) Do you have suggestions for meeting place? Change of schedule?
Future meeting subjects? Possible presenters?

The future of the SIG depends upon the answers that I receive.

Thanks you.

Dear Friends,

The annual meeting of ASHG will be in Washington next year (2010), so I
just wanted you to know ahead of time so you might think about
submitting an abstract for a poster. Bonnie and I had one accepted for
the 2006 meeting in New Orleans. I think that you need to have at least
one ASHG member as a co-author. I'm a member and it is usually worth
your while to join if you plan to attend the meeting (the cost of
membership + member-registration is not much more than non-member
registration, and you get the journal for a year, or the cost of
member-registration is even less if you choose on-line access rather
than hard copy of the journal). The deadline for abstract submission is
June 2, 2010. The dates of the meeting are Nov. 2-6, which is about the
same time as the FTDNA meeting, so I hope they don't conflict (maybe I
should send a note to Bennett or Max).

Jim, could you forward this to your NVIG members.

Whit

I plan to continue attending the SIG … but, my schedule the last year has been busy so that some nights I’m just not energized to go out again.  And, we travel a lot as was the case during the most recent meeting.

A potential presentation format would be to send out an article or two from current literature or web links to some specific information … a couple weeks in advance … and then ask members to read and come prepared to discuss.  Also, the more advanced genetic genealogists my want to bring in addition materials that could enhance the discussion.  We’re all in a learning mode and this is one possible way to learn with minimal preparation time by a single presenter.

Jim,

You do a great job keeping these things going.  You deserve a lot of credit

1.  I am interested in notices of future meetings

2.  A bunch of things conspire against me attending many of the meetings.  Normal personal things like traffic and changing jobs are typical reasons.  However, the bigger reason is that I am losing interest in DNA since "nothing new" seems to have happened in several years.

3.  I think that outside presenters would mix things up.  Maybe someone from the Genographics project or someone from NIST.

Hi, Jim,

I am replying to your questions on Gen-Gen about forthcoming meetings
- I was one of the three who attended.
I believe that too many things conspired against having a large group
this past time, among which were:

• The first meeting after the hiatus of the summer break
• Settling down to a new Fall routine with school, etc.
• The new location (which I very much favor)
• The topic of the meeting. Many surname administrators already
attend past sessions and I think they get a lot out of the
discussions, but I suspect that the others don't aspire to be a
surname administrator yet have a deep interest in DNA testing and
analysis.

The one thing you did not mention was that our meeting with only three
present lasted from 7 until 9. We had wide ranging discussions of many
DNA-related topics, primarily because you and Bill Hurst are so
knowledgable of the DNA process. If any others had attended, the
discussions could have been oriented toward their problems as well.

I would vote for staying at the McLean Library, keeping the hours we
have, and going forward. You might take a look at past session topics
and rotate to those which have been well-attended in the past.

I would call our last meeting attendance as a statistical fluctuation
- I think we have interested people who just could not attend last
time and the topic might have been too restrictive if attendees don't
aspire to be surname administrators.

Keep up the good work!
- Bye from Bill Howard

Hi Jim and all,

I am of course interested in future meetings of the SIG. I've been to most of them, including the one this month. I prefer the Dolly Madison location over Fairfax City. Getting to the latter would involve going out with late rush hour traffic. But I could make it.

There were probably several reasons for the small turn-out at the last meeting, mainly that it was at a new location and was pre-Labor Day.

The problem of presentations is more difficult. Most of those of us in the group who give them have already done so more than once. Getting outside presenters might depend on getting a larger attendance.

Bill

Conflict right before a Labor Day weekend trip and after taking daughter to college prior weekend.

DM is okay. Personally prefer Fairfax City since I'm in Springfield. The parking is plentiful in the garage and the lighting is excellent. Not hard for someone to take training to close after a late meeting.(I just came back from Old Dominion SIG tonight)

Thanks.

Hello, Jim,

I'm Marie Rundquist of Independence Avenue, the GW Parkway, 495 and I270 --
where I live in Gaithersburg. Even with a carpool, and access to the HOV lanes,
I am finding that making a 7:00 p.m. engagement ANYWHERE in this town is
impossible -- Try as I might, I can't make it any further than Old Georgetown
Road by that time. The move to Northern Virginia I had anticipated for my
Government client never worked out -- we are still downtown (my client and I).
My extracurricular availability for week night activities is nil ... and this I
regret as I did enjoy your group and participating in it was a shot in the arm.

I'm engaged heavily with my Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia FTDNA Project --
we're at 126 members now and showing a strong Amerindian trend in the Y
haplogroups for our participants, with the C3b haplogroup, the only known Native
American subgroup of Haplogroup C showing up in the matches for 5 of our
participants. I am coordinating my data with the other C/C3 Administrator
through Roberta Estes, who is engaging in further research of the Haplogroup C.
We have posted 5 FGS results to the NIH Genbank and continue to put our markers
on the map this way.

I continue to meet my maternal ancestor Anne Marie descendants through our
project - and just attended two Mi'kmaq-Acadian festivals in Nova Scotia where
her descendants can be found living in the villages along the Southern Coast.
What a wonderful time we had up there this year -- eating the Moose Meat,
Mussels, Bar Clams, and Eel..visiting with cousins and exchanging stories...how
great it is to be alive in your heritage!

An email circular would be great -- I can read better late at night. I am
simply unable with my schedule and work to participate in anything early
evening. I am "evening disabled," I suppose - based on this ridiculous
Fall/Winter commuting schedule.

Best to everyone!

Marie Rundquist

Thanks for keeping this SIG going.  I continue to be interested in Genetic Genealogy and should be able to attend future meetings.  Dolly Madison Library is great for me.  I was unable to attend the September meeting because of a conflict.

Subject: [GenGen-NV] Member Roll Call of the SIG on Surname Projects and Genetic Genealogy

Thanks you.

Jim and all

I attend when I can but missed Sept as I was (and am) out of town.  Dolly Madison is a good location for me  Fairfax City second choice.

As my calendar now stands I plan to attend Oct and Nov but will miss Dec.

Thanks

lew

am always willing to give a presentation on a wide range of DNA topics. I gave
a more advanced one at the 5th Internation Conference of Genetic Genealogists in
Houston this spring that I would be glad to give. I can also give a
presentation of the very basics of DNA testing (somewhat along the lines of what
I gave to you before).

Jim,

!.  Yes, I am interested in future meetings.  I do miss a lot of them since I do a lot of traveling plus I sometimes have conflicting meetings on the first Wednesday.  I attend when I can.

2.  I did not attend the last meeting since I was in Little Rock, Arkansas for the 2009 Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference.

3.  The meeting place does not matter to me.  Since I live in Hayfield Farm (off of Telegraph Road), both Dolly Madison and Tysons Corner are about the same distrance for me.  As for topics, what you have been running is fine with me.  I am always willing to give a presentation on a wide range of DNA topics.  I gave a more advanced one at the 5th Internation Conference of Genetic Genealogists in Houston this spring that I would be glad to give.  I can also give a presentation of the very basics of DNA testing (somewhat along the lines of what I gave to you before).

Yours aye,

Boib McLaren

Yes I am interested, but caring for my wife keeps me from attending all the meetings.

See above.

Dolley Madison, schedule, subjects are fine.  I am a newbie to DNA and all information is welcome.

Thank you.  Mike Nolen

Thanks you.

Thanks, Susan. We are moving the subject from last the September
meeting and thus will be discussing the starting and management of
surname projects.
