Hi,

Thanks for having me by -- and I very much enjoyed sharing with you
all. How fun is it to find people who enjoy this topic and can
discuss in depth!  Last night there was a question about our H11 data;
the project participant does indeed participate in the H11 project as
well as the one I administer; his record is unassigned in the H11
project information; he traces to a surname of King -- a surname found
in our group as well. No maternal line ancestor information has been
provided thus far.

I found the site http://www.worldfamilies.net/mtdna/u5/ where there
was indeed an entry for a participant having a Cherokee maternal line
ancestor.

Is this a common or rare finding within the study -- to look at the
results, I thought it appeared rare. But I'm interested in the
one-off, always. Of course, in that the East Coast was ground 0 for
European-Native American intermarriage in the days of early
settlement, and the location of the maternal line ancestor was East
Coast North America, there could be any number of explanation (or one!).

I could not locate the administrator link -- if someone wants to refer
me to a POC for the site, I'd be glad to follow up on this lead as we
do also have this type in our data.

Thanks again!

Regards,

Marie Rundquist (mrundqui@...)

Based on a very short discussion we had tonight at the Gen-Gen meeting at the Pimmit Run Library, it was suggested that this site might provide a reference to my paper on using correlation techniques to analyze Y-DNA haplotypes. You can find this paper at the following URL:

It is entitled: "The Use of Correlation Techniques for the Analysis of Pairs of Y-Chromosome DNA Haplotypes
Paper 1: Rationale, Methodology and Genealogy Time Scale"

Comments on this paper would be much appreciated. Send them to the email address at the end of the Paper.

Many thanks,

To members of the Surname Projects and Genetic Genealogy SIG and interested parties:

I have the Meeting Room at the Tysons-Pimmit Library researaved for 6 May and 3 June,  after which I expect to take two or three months off for summer.

I plan to devote the meeting of 6 May to discussion of the recent FTDNA conference.  I have asked Bill Hurst to lead off and tell us about his session at the conference and then I hope others who where there can join in a discussion to fill in details for those of us who were not able to make it this years.

I expect the meeting on 3 June to be devoted to introductory material specifically for some of our newer members and guests.  I told the attendees last night that I was interested in receiving questions and I will organize future meetings around these questions, and the 3 June will be one of these "question and answers" meetings.  Depending on what questions I get, we could devote an entire session to a single question or a class of related questions.  Any time left over can be used for "questions from the floor" or general discussion.

Also if you have a topic of interest, please consider presenting it to the group.  This can be done very informally, or a formal as you would like to make it.  If you are uncomfortable in the preparateion or presentation, please let me know and I would be glad to work with you, or even lead the discussion.  I have found the group to be neither shy or intimidating.

Please send me your questions and/or topics so that I can get started with organizing.

Jim,

I think I can make the 6 May meeting. This FTDNA conference was great and
I'm looking for some future announcements from FTDNA. As for the 3 June
meeting, I will be on my way to Richland, Washington that day.

Yours aye,

Bob

*CORRECTION!!!*

I made an error in updating the Gen-Gen calendar and the automatic
notification system repeated last months notice.

The meeting for June 3 will be

An Introduction to Y-DNA.

This is by request from some of the members. Bring your questions. No
question is too elementary.

Susan,

The 12- or 24- marker set of values is the haplotype. Are you referring to
haplogroup? If so, this is estimated from your haplotype and is normally
about 95% or so accurate. If you tested through Family Tree DNA, they will
either estimate the haplogroup and give it to you or, if they are uncertain
about the haplogroup, they will do a free SNP test to determine the
haplogroup. If you have tested through SMFG or Ancestry.com, they only
estimate the haplogroup (and at times their estimate is way off).

Yours aye,

Bob McLaren

My son had 12 markers tested with Family Tree. They predicted his haplogroup and
their prediciton seemed way off to him. When he spoke with the representative,
she agreed, and ordered SNP testing at no expense to my son.

His haplogroup was different than the predicted one. We were very grateful to
Family Tree for investigating further. Since that time, my son has joined his
haplogroup project at Family Tree and is awaiting refinement results.

I would highly recommend FTDNA to those who are interested in DNA testing.

I have just checked with Tyson-Pemmit Library an tried to schedule our
September meeting. I was told that they would be closing at 8 pm, and
that the fire marshall had NOT approved them for extended hours access.
They expect to have approval later but as of today they do not. The
library web site shows that both Dolly Madison and Oakton do permit
extended access. Oakton is already booked for September 2. So I have
reserved Dolly Madison. I will periodically check with Tysons to see if
they have received approval and I determine if we can return there.

If you have suggestions for alternate meeting place, I would like to
hear from you. And, as always, I am looking for suggestions for meeting
content.

Greetings:

If you received this email, it is because you ar on the mail list for
the GenGen-NV group at Yahoo. This mail list was established to support
the Surname Projects and Genetic Genealogy SIG of the Fairfax
Genealogical Society. I would appreciate a response from each of you
indicating your level of interest and providing suggestions for future
courses of action.

Furthermore, our last meeting was held on the 2nd of September at the
Dolly Madison public library in McLean VA with a change of venue from
Tysons Corner. Only three persons in were attendance. I would like to
know why.

Please answer the following:

1) Are you interested in future meetings of the SIG. If not, I can
remove you from the mail list.

2) If you did not attend the last meeting, was it because of lact of
interest in the announced subject? Conflict is schedule? Went to the
wrong location? Difficulty of getting to Dolly Madison? Other?

3) Do you have suggestions for meeting place? Change of schedule?
Future meeting subjects? Possible presenters?

The future of the SIG depends upon the answers that I receive.

Thanks you.

Jim,

1.  I am interested in future meetings of the SIG.

2.  The reason I missed the September meeting is that I was attending the FGS conference in Little Rock.

3.  Dolly Madison is ok with me.  If the SIG members would rather meet at the Fairfax City library, they allow meetings to continue after hours in their first floor conference rooms.  The Irish SIG has done this.  My only suggestion for presentations is to schedule beginner sessions from time to time.

Subject: [GenGen-NV] Member Roll Call of the SIG on Surname Projects and Genetic Genealogy

Thanks you.

Jim,

I hated to miss the last meeting, but we were in MN for a family wedding.  I was interested in the topic - I have not looked up at how to get to Dolly Madison, but intend to do so for the next one.  Thanks for all you do.  Susan Klein
