Graduate Research Assistantships (2) in Environmental Sciences
We have two research assistantships available beginning in January, 2001
that will partially support new graduate students pursuing a Master of
Science degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of New Haven.

Position 1: Geology/Physical Geography
The Research Assistant will work on research in karst hydrology on San
Salvador Island, Bahamas. In addition he or she will help maintain a GIS
database for the island, a web page about that database and a web page for
the Bahamian Field Station. The research has been on going for 13 years and
it involves a detailed investigation of the island's natural "plumbing" and
it's relationship to current land use and future development. The assistant
will participate in field work on San Salvador and so must be able to engage
in strenuous activities in a tropical setting. Candidates for this position
must have an undergraduate degree in geology, hydrology (including a
substantial number of geology courses), or physical geography, some
experience with GIS and GPS, and the computer skills necessary to maintain a
web page.

Position 2: Ecology
The Research Assistant will work on research in salt marshes and estuaries.
The objective of the main project is to determine the effect of invasion by
Phragmites australis (Common Reed) on habitat use of tidal marshes by
resident fish and shrimp species in the lower Hudson River Estuary. Use of
the marsh surface by fish and shrimp will be measured in Phragmites and
non-Phragmites stands using quantitative sampling techniques. Tidal
flooding depth and duration, marsh geomorphology, invertebrate prey species,
and vegetation characteristics will also be measured to determine which
factors are important in controlling habitat use. Candidates for this
position should have an undergraduate degree in biology (emphasising
ecology) or environmental science. Geology, Physical Geography or other
similar degrees are also acceptable as long as there is some course work in
field biology or botany.

The University of New Haven is a small, comprehensive university with a
focus on applied fields. The Environmental Science Program has faculty in
geology, marine ecology, terrestrial/salt marsh ecology, and Geographic
Information Systems. There are co-operating faculty in hydrologic modelling,
bioremediation, air pollution chemistry, and toxicology. The department has
a state-of-the-art, PC-based GIS lab, it's own boat for work on Long Island
Sound, and it supervises two University-owned research wetlands, one salt
and one fresh. We are affiliated with the Bahamian Field Station on San
Salvador Island.

Thanks for bearing with me as we make the switch from eskimo.com to eGroups.com.

I'll take this opportunity to correct any misimpression that the eGroups
boilerplate may have left-GeoSci-Jobs is NOT a discussion group-it is still for
announcing job and related opportunities ONLY.

The eGroup site handles mail lists a bit different from eskimo.com. One nice
thing is that I can tailor the bottom tagline a bit different for each mail
list, so you'll always have the unsubscribe address for your list(s) handy
--you'll find it at the bottom of each message. And the subject tag will tell
you which mail list you're receiving.

You have these options for your message delivery for each mail list:

   a.. Individual emails
Messages are delivered one at a time to you via email. This is the best option
if you want to keep up on the latest posts immediately. To minimize the size of
messages and help prevent dissemination of computer viruses, the GeoSci-Jobs
mail list will not accept attached files.
   b.. Daily Digest
Messages are delivered in batches of 25 or daily, whichever comes sooner. This
is the best option if you want to receive fewer mail messages and don't need
up-to-the minute posts in your inbox.
c.. No Mail / Web Only
This option puts email message delivery on hold, for example while you are on
vacation. Message archives are available at
http://www.egroups.com/group/GeoSci-Jobs/. [Older archives containing messages
sent prior to 10/25/2000 will remain at
http://www.eskimo.com/~tcsmith/mail/cej-arc.html until 1/1/2001 after which they
will be removed.]
To set any of these options, go to http://www.egroups.com/group/GeoSci-Jobs and
select from the drop-down list of message delivery options, or send a message as
specifed below.

To change your subscription to daily digest mode:
Send a blank message to GeoSci-Jobs-digest@egroups.com

To change your subscription to individual emails:

A reminder... GeoSci-Jobs is for announcing employment opportunities (including
jobs in any setting, postdocs, internships, scholarships and assistantships) in
the geosciences and related fields. Resumes, CV's, job applications, etc., are
NOT accepted and will not be sent to subscribers. [Few jobs seekers want to wade
through hundreds or thousands of other people's resumes looking for a job
announcement.]
