I have mentioned before that one of my long range geodashing goals is to
complete the odd mix and match challenge of my caching challenge of getting a
cache in each county within 100 miles of the Arch in St. Louis with my
geodashing adventures. There are 76 counties in this challenge and I have
reached dashpoints in 71 of them. Only 5 to go. I am fortunate this month to
have 2 reachable DPs in one of the missing counties. This is the second one.
Now only 3 to go.

Dashpoint: GDBC-BYDA
Coordinates: 39.5438, -90.3279
Location: Scott County, IL, about 66 miles N of home

It’s hard for us to make a day trip on Sunday but I wanted to get this point
before it got away. We stopped for some lunch at a barbeque place that was
close to home but that I had never been to before. It was very good and we plan
to return soon. We drove north, across the Mississippi River, past Alton, IL
and into rural countyside. I have probably mentioned before that one of my
geo-goals (of which I have many) is to visit as many places named Manchester as
I can. There are 32 of them (depending on how you count them) in the US alone.
I have been to 13 of them. I have been to Manchester, IL several times although
it is not a very big place. I found this DP on the northeast side of town, in
the block bounded by East St, Lee St, Arch St and 7th St. We stopped on Arch
St, facing Lee St with the DP to our right. It appeared to be in an empty lot
that occupied the corner of the block. There was a small garden with a wire
fence that is probably used to tie tomato plants to during the growing season.
Several large truck tires were laying along one side of the garden which were
used as planting beds. A fat robin sat on the wire fence and looked at us as I
made notes. A small ranch painted light yellow with dark green trim was near or
just past the DP.

After grabbing a few caches, we started on our way home. I was driving down a
straight rural road when I was startled by bright blue and red flashing lights
right behind me. It was an Illinois State Police officer who got me going 64
mph in a 55 mph zone. When he approached and asked for my license and
registration, I noticed him looking all around and asked me where I had been.
He didn’t pause for an explanation of geodashing or geocaching and returned with
a written warning and told me to be careful. Thank you, I will! For non US
people, a warning means no fine and no notice on your record that will make your
insurance rates go up. I had the impression that he was fishing, looking for
people who had been drinking or doing drugs or some other more serious violation
and wasn’t interested in ordinary speeders. I was lucky and resumed my journey
home during which I obeyed the speed limit the rest of the way. As a post
script, all I can say is that there seems to be a rash of incidents among
geodashers in the past week or so. I extend my sympathies to D for his car
damage who seems to have taken the worse of the incidents. I am grateful that
my incident is so minor.

That’s 3 points for RogBarn, thanks for getting me out to visit Manchester, IL
again.
