Dashpoint Reached: GD5-03945   Message List

This dashpoint is the closest to my home - EVER - (only a little more than 12
miles), but again, follows suit with the majority of the other dashpoints
I've hit in Illinois. Just west of Yorkville and east of Plano (not to be
confused with my hometown of Plainfield) along Route 34 lies a farm field
with fresh stubble from harvested corn. Along Route 34, I got as close as
692 meters, so I drove up the Eldamain road to the west and north to Faxon
road. Unfortunately Faxon Road dead ends from both sides at the railroad
track, so it was backtrack to Route 34 and pick up Cannonball Drive and pick
up Faxon Road from the east headed west toward the railroad track.

Just shy of the railroad on the farmland that was obviously the "owner" of
the dashpoint, it looked like the farmer was setting up a tree nursery (lots
of very young trees and a frame of a new building that could very easily be a
cashier's hut). Luckily, there was also a foot path going between farmlands
that was also about 700 meters from the dashpoint, this time from the north.
Since there weren't any "No Trespassing" signs, I ventured down the footpath,
crossing a little creek (the maps show it as a river, but it was only about
10 feet across and a couple of inches deep). Once I crossed the creek, I
took my readings again. Seeing as I was still 300+ meters from the point, I
hoofed it across a field of stubble until getting within 100 meters (actually
95 meters). Since the topography wasn't going to change within 500 meters in
any direction, and I was also bound for a Geocache today (GC253F) I decided
to call it hit. Ironic, however, that had this dashpoint been given any time
before November, it would have been unreachable in the center of a almost
impossible to navigate cornfield (and with combines around I wouldn't have
wanted to).

Thanks for the report, Markwell. It may have been just a cornfield, but your eye for detail results in a good story. Your observation that navigating the...
