I don't know how a player can control the orientation of his photos. It
can be done, because most of the time the orientation is correct, but a
few times a vertical shot gets displayed horizontally. In those cases, I
manually correct them. I've done that for your photos in this case, too.

By the way, Game 101's photos are off to a great start. Some very good
photographs and some very interesting locations. Check them out:

As geodashers know, sometimes, it is not so much the destination as the journey.
This one started out quite strangely. We headed out on the interstate and while
still in the city of St. Louis, before crossing into Illinois, we came upon a
couple of police cars sitting in the middle of the highway with their lights
going. As we past the second one, I saw the police officers looking at
something lying in the road. It was a turkey, the kind they raise for the
Thanksgiving dinner table. Just as I drew abreast of them, one of them poked it
with a stick and the turkey started flapping around. We could only guess that
it had fallen off some truck and landed right there in the middle of the highway
in the middle of the city. We continued on, crossed into Illinois but while
still on the interstate, we came upon 5 or 6 turkeys trying to find something to
eat right at the edge of the highway. These were wild turkeys, brown instead of
white. We just shook our heads and joked about needing to stay on the
interstate to see turkeys instead of heading off after dashpoints.
Anyway, we found BYOP about 125 meters north of the road that marks the boundary
between Bond County and Clinton County and in a field. As we approached, a very
large piece of farm equipment that took up the entire road came down the road at
us and I started to get a bit concerned about where to go when he turned into
the field in front of us, showing by a wave of his hand that he was grateful
that we had waited patiently to let him through. From the DP itself, another
combine was moving thru a field with some speed, kicking up a big plume of dust.
We saw a lot of farm equipment today as farmers were tring to catch up on chores
that had been put off during the very wet October.

After getting 12 caches in and near the town of Carlyle (and two more after this
one), we visited this point, also in a farm field. Across the street was a row
of several houses, one had a sign saying “Dodel Holsteins” and “Prairie Farm
Dairy”. We know Prairie Farm Dairy because it is the brand name of the milk we
drink. It’s nice to see some of its origins. It was late afternoon and the sky
was “swirly” and some pinks and oranges poked thru a couple of the holes low in
the western sky.

Thanks for getting us out, we had a wonderful day out on a warm November day.

This is day one of a two day dash trip.

Cheryl is in California tending to some family duties so I’m free to do another
mini-dash-marathon. Because of extra hours worked earlier in the week, I took
Friday off to start a two day dash trip. (I needed Sunday to take care of
chores.)

ABCUJA

ABCUJA is about three miles on the other side of the Potomac River via Whites
Ferry. I followed a large log truck on Wasche Road to the driveway of 19015
where I parked. I walked another 100 yards or so to 19100. The DP was 207 feet
in the open field across the road from the white single story rambler … another
rather unremarkable DP.

ABCUHI

This was the one I skipped on the way back from Cincinnati last week because it
was getting too dark. That was a good decision because this required some
bushwacking to get close enough to score. ABCUHI is only about a mile from I-70
a few miles east of Hagerstown, MD. There were private homes all along Crystal
Falls Dr. between the road and the DP except for a vacant lot across from the
Black Rock Bible Church. I parked there and put my boots on as there was
considerable brush and undergrowth among the trees. The DP was south of a
stream that I was following (walking east). I finally got directly opposite it
and by walking on a downed log out over the stream got to within 310 feet. I
could not have done that in the dark.

ABCUGA

ABCUGA is in the northern part of Chambersburg, PA, near the intersection of
Edenville Rd. and North Franklin St. I pulled over onto the broad driveway of
904 Edenville right before the stop sign for Franklin St. Both garage doors
were open revealing a workshop on one side and a large six foot high very sturdy
(presumably dog) pen on the other. A white SUV was in the driveway. The house
was a yellow with brown trim split level structure. A lady was walking around
near the workshop so I didn’t get out. I was 310 feet in the car.

ABCUKA

From Chambersburg I went east on 30 and then north on PA-233 through Caledonia
State Park and some very beautiful country in the Michaux State Forest. Less
than a mile south on Shippensburg Road I found ABCUKA at 1250 where the
Krumrines live. I parked across the road and walked to the front yard of the
large mobile home. I was 50 feet from the DP standing beside a deer statue in a
clump of trees that still had a few red leaves clinging to their branches. A
detour on PA-233 forced me to return to I-81 via Shippensburg Road and in so
doing, I crossed a well marked crossing of the Appalachian Trail. It always
makes me want to get out and hike.

ABCUNO

My GPSr played some tricks on me on this one; perhaps because of the extremely
sharp turn onto Cemetery Road from Middle Ridge Road, but it directed me all the
way into Newport, PA before I figured out I was a mile past ABCUNO and had to
turn around to get to it. I did so and parked on the side of Cemetery Road just
past the long driveway for 200 Cemetery Road where I was about 150 yards from
the DP. It was an easy walk in the open grassy field to the zero point about 50
feet from a corn field beyond. Two dogs (black and grey) came to greet me from
the house way across the driveway. I turned to chat with them, but their owner
called them back before we could get acquainted. I walked back to the car on
the driveway since it was only 20 yards or so from the DP.

ABCUOK

ABCUOK is one of those DPs where I like to use two GPSrs, one for navigation and
the other to tell you how close you are to the DP. The only way to reasonably
score this DP is in the westbound lane of I-80 about 10 miles west of Milton,
PA. I-80 is a major east-west truck route and today was no exception. I was
trying to slow down as much as I dared, but I had an 18-wheeler climbing up my
tailpipe. I finally managed to pull off onto the wide shoulder, but I over shot
the DP a bit. I came to a stop about 300 feet from the DP. I’m sure I had been
much closer. Streets and Trips shows it about 50 yards north of the westbound
lane. The environment was like a lot of Pennsylvania…forest uphill to the north
and more trees on the steep slope in the median down to the eastbound lanes.

From there I made my way to Wilkes Barre where I would spend the night.

This is day two of a two day dash trip.

ABCYIV

After a good night’s sleep, I continued north to just north of Scranton where
ABCYIV is just a short distance (150ish yards) west of US – 6 and 11. A very
sharp left onto Old Trail Road and a quick sharp right onto Glenview Road put me
160 feet from the DP while stopped on Glenview. The DP is in an open field of
tall dry grass behind a ramshackle cinder block and wood structure facing on Old
Trail. The other side of Glenview Road was a steep wooded slope with a single
very large (3 feet in diameter) double trunk tree sporting a “No hunting or
trespassing” sign.

ABCYUB

From Scranton, my route took me southeast into the heart of the Poconos just a
bit south of one of the dance venues we go to. ABCYUB is in a large
quasi-private lake resort around Tego Lake (I believe). The DP was supposed to
be an easy drive through near the end of Carnation Road. The passable (at least
for Cassie) portion of Carnation road ended about a quarter mile before the DP.
But it was a fairly easy walk to the zero point through the thick layer of
leaves. A 14 foot tall (21 eight inch cinderblocks) chimney stood alone over
some scattered rubble of a former structure of some sort near the DP.

ABCYUF

ABCYUF was reached easily in the expansive side yard of a modern brown split
level house at #7 Fairview Road a couple miles north of Milford, NJ. I parked
across the street beneath an apple tree loaded with red apples. A small brown
dog yapped at me from his chained observation post as I walked to within 150
feet of the DP. Along with the DP was a round above ground swimming pool
(drained for the winter), several newly planted trees, and a wooden birdhouse
atop a green metal pole near the edge of the yard.

ABCYOL

ABCYOL is back in Pennsylvania very near Evansburg State park between Skipjack
Creek and Perklomen Creek. The DP is about 150 feet north of Yerkes Road. I
turned onto Fairhill Drive to park and walked back to 3860 Yerkes where the DP
lay behind the small white house with green trim and an oversized brick chimney
right in the center of the front of the house.

ABCYQI

I then went across the Delaware river into industrial New Jersey and found
ABCYQI right next to Greenwich Lake Park about a half mile north of I-295. I
pulled off of Tomlin Road at the entrance to Louis J Silvestro Memorial Lake. A
sign on the eight foot high chain link fence/gate said “Use of the lake must be
approved by the Recreation Committee.” I was 200 feet from the DP standing at
the gate.

ABCUYH

The sun had set and it was getting dark by the time I reached ABCUYH a mile or
so north of Bel Air, MD. The DP is at 512 E. Jarrettsville Road, a small white
with red trim rambler. I was 240 feet from the DP standing in the driveway. A
most unusual white pipe contraption with a sign with ornate lettering “the Lazy
Ti jr” on it stood in the front yard. It is right across the street from St
Ignatius Roman Catholic Church where everyone was just arriving for Saturday
evening Mass. I parked in the far corner of the parking lot trying to stay out
of everyone’s way.

ABCUPI

ABCUPI is on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park. It is in
the middle of a large open area in front of the Administration Building.
(There’s probably some name for it, but I don’t know it.) By now it was totally
dark as I parked in a handicapped space on Regents Dr. just past the
Administration Building and walked back to the zero point noting that every tree
around the area had a yellow ribbon around it. Not far from the DP was a small
garden with a plaque, “May Peace Prevail on Earth…,” a memorial to the tragedy
of September 11, 2001.

GDAB-YKUV reached 0935hrs 07/11/2009 at Mt Macedon, Victoria
After travelling northwest along the Calder Freeway we reached the green hilly
slopes of Mount Macedon. The zero point was 41.0 metres down the slope in a
large property at No 11 Cheniston Road. This area contained many large, very
expensive properties prized for their luxuriant gardens. The property opposite
No 11 had an auction board and flag on display and was being auctioned that day.
We did not inspect the property or attend the auction as we had another six
dashpoints to reach that day.

GDAB-YKYW reached 1100hrs 07/11/2009 in the Redcastle State Forest, Victoria.
Luckily this dashpoint was located just outside the Puckapunyal Military Area
not far from Seymour. We stopped the car at 411 metres on Damper Dam Track in
the Redcastle State Forest. The temperature was a very pleasant 25 degrees
Celcius as we walked through the thinly spread stringy eucalypts to zero. There
were many yellow, blue and violet wildflowers and we could hear the calls of a
large number of native birds. Although we did not see any native animals there
was evidence of their presence in the form of numerous scats on the scrubby
ground, probably kangaroos and wallabies as wombats have very distinctive
droppings.

GDAB-YKUF reached 1315hrs 07/11/2009 near Goornong, Victoria
Just off the Midland Highway, we reached 13.4 metres from the car on Pethericks
Road near Barnadown, south of Goornong. The zero point was in a large recently
mown paddock full of round haybales. There was plenty of fodder but no animals
in sight on this flat grazing land. There was a single farmhouse about 400
metres away.

GDAB-YKUQ reached 1350hrs 07/11/2009 near Hunter, Victoria
After stopping the car at 53.5 metres on Hunter Road we walked in through a
rusty, unpadlocked gate that led to a tumbledown farmhouse. All that was left
were two brick chimneys and the corrugated iron sheet that was once the roof. We
walked on to a low rusty fence where the GPSr read 0.00 metres. Beyond the fence
was some disused farm equipment rusting away in the weather. This derelict farm
had a very large enclosed paddock with plenty of tall yellow grass but no
animals to feed on it.

GDAB-YKOF reached 1440hrs 07/11/2009 near Mitiamo, Victoria
This dashpoint was in a very large wheatfield due south of Mitiamo. We stopped
the car at 358 metres at an unlocked gate and walked through the field of
mature, yellow wheat stalks, taking care not to damage any of the crop. We
reached 93.1 metres before turning back. In the adjacent paddock there was a
flock of sheep clustered around a dam relatively full of water. A passenger
train tooted as it travelled along the edge of this large wheatfield on its way
to Bendigo before heading on to Melbourne.

GDAB-YJYM reached 1555hrs 07/11/2009 near Berrimal, Victoria
The car stopped at 55.5 metres on the Old St Arnaud Road near Berrimal, south of
Wedderburn. Zero was in a large grassy paddock devoid of animals, and I reached
45.7 metres at the fenceline. There was a very strong smell in the area and on
the way out we saw a dead kangaroo on the side of the road - that explained the
smell.

GDAB-YKAB reached 1815hrs 07/11/2009 at Burrumbeet, Victoria.
Travelling towards home on the Western Highway we reached 34.1 metres from the
car on the edge of the road. At that point we had Lake Burrumbeet on the south
side and the fallen remains of a stone and brick building on the north side.
Took photos and headed off for home to rest.

That's 21 points for Dashing Dog Mac and for GeoTerriers, thanks Scout.

GDAB-YKUV: reached at9:35am 7/11/2009 at Mt Macedon, Victoria
Zero point looked to be down the very leafy driveway of the property at number
11 Cheniston Rd, Mt Macedon about an hour north of Melbourne. The properties
here are very beautiful and expensive. The house opposite was to be auctioned
this day but we didn't even stop to take a look as we had a long day ahead of
us.
GDAB-YKYW: reached at 11:00am 7/11/2009 near Costerfield, Victoria
We continued north towards Heathcote and then onto Costerfield, not a town but
more of a small group of houses and a hall. Here we took a road into the
Redcastle State Forest where we stopped the car at 411 metres on the DamperDam
Track. We headed into the forest for an easy walk to zero through the spindly
eucalypts and wildflowers. We didn't see any wildlife just plenty of evidence
that the forest was indeed populated by plenty of native animals and birds.
GDAB-YKUF: reached at 1:15pm 7/11/2009 near Barnadown, Victoria
After stopping for lunch and a browse around a local market in Heathcote
we continued in a northerly direction. We found this dash point just off
Pethericks Rd where we reached 13.4 metres in the car next to a large paddock
containing many large round haybales. DDMac got a little closer at the
fenceline.
GDAB-YKUQ: reached at 1:50pm 7/11/2009 near Hunter, Victoria
After a wrong turn we finally stopped the car at 53.5 metres at a rusty gate in
Hunter Rd. The gate was not padlocked so we went in. The short driveway led to
what was once a farmhouse but was now only sheets of rusty corrugated iron
sheets propped up against two brick chimneys in the shade of a peppercorn tree.
We continued on past the house and reached zero at another fence. Scattered
around the place was some rusted farm equipment.
GDAB-YKOF: reached at 2:40pm 7/11/2009 near Mitiamo, Victoria
This dash point was in the flat wheatfields around Mitiamo. We stopped the car
at 358 metres on the verge of Serpentine Rd and accessed the field through an
unlocked gate. We picked our way through the knee-high mature wheat stalks until
we reached 93 metres. As we were taking photos we heard the toot of a passenger
train travelling south.
GDAB-YJYM: reached at 3:55pm 7/11/2009 south of Wedderburn, Victoria
We stopped the car at 55.5 metres on the Old St Arnaud Rd and reached 45.7
metres at the fenceline of a large well-grassed paddock. Low hills could be seen
in the distancebut no animals except a decidely dead and smelly roo on the side
of the road not too far from where we had parked.
GDAB-YKAB: reached at 6:15pm 7/11/2009 at Burrumbeet, Victoria
We reached 34.1 metres from the car on the Western Highway at Burrumbeet. We
were finally on our way home after a long day. We stopped beside the remains of
a brick and stone building to take some photos.
GDAB-YLID: reached at 10:30am 8/11/2009 at Mt Eliza, Victoria
This dash point was about 40 kilometres from home on the Mornington Peninsula in
the prized area of Mt Eliza. We stopped the car in front of a magnificent home
overlooking the bay. As there was a For Sale sign out the front I thought for a
fleeting moment that DDMac had won the lottery and was considering a new home
for us. No such luck! Zero point looked to be in the house at number 13 Pelican
Place, a small enclave of very large luxurious houses with great views of
Canadian bay.

On a trip south from Flin Flon to Winnipeg I stopped and located this dashpoint
just NW of Ashern. I parked on a gravel road about 105 m from the dashpoint. I
climbed over a barbwire fence, walked about 20 m through a bush, and crossed a
farmer's field to another barbwire fence against some more bush. At this point
I was 5 m from the dashpoint and figured I was close enough. I did not want to
hang around too long since it was deer hunting season and I was not wearing my
orange.

I spent a few days in Escondido at my parent's home, which is why my header is
shorter than usual. My father had cataract surgery on Tuesday, so I took him to
the Shiley Eye Center in La Jolla, on the campus of the University of
California, at San Diego. While he was in prep and surgery (about three hours),
I headed to this dashpoint, which was about 15 miles to the north.

I made a straight shot up the I-5 freeway, which passes just to the east of
UCSD, and then got off on again on Manchester Avenue, which overlooks a dry
(seasonal, actually) lagoon ecological reserve. After some bends and turns, I
was heading north on Pacific Ranch Drive.

I was just outside of scoring range on the east side of the road, so I turned
around at the first safe opportunity, and then drove slowly back down Pacific
Ranch. My GPSr showed 324 feet, so I claimed 99 meters, and the satellite shot
confirms that this is about right. As I was on a down-slope in the road, I did
not stop here to let the GPSr settle in more, but I did stop for a minute a
little farther down the road, to take one photo looking up the arroyo: very
pretty, with a number of trees. Had parking been legal, I probably could have
walked to GZ, or fairly close. I also took a photo of the For Sale sign: 10
coastal acres, zoned RR-2, dividable to up to 15 lots. I'll post the picture
that I took of the sign, in case anyone is interested ;-)

chaosmanor

Wherever you went, there you were; hope it doesn't sell for a while, and maybe
gets donated for a park. It could use a geocache ;-)

This dashpoint was quite close to my home and I decided to go after it just
before sunset. It's in Pike Lake and I was able to score from the edge of the
cattails on land that is part of Three Rivers Park Reserve District. I drove
into the area on 63rd Ave N, which turns to a gravel road at the edge of the
park land. On the way in, I passed the closest approach from the road and parked
in a parking area on the north side of the road, east of the DP, because the
road is signed "No Parking". It was about a 300m walk back along the road and
then southerly through woods to the edge of the cattails bordering the lake.
After scoring I got some more walking exploring the area. My total walk was
1400m and the drive was 30km.

After spending a few days in Escondido at my parent's home, I headed for our own
home in Camarillo, but took a long loop to the south, and then east, before
heading northwest back to the freeways of Greater Los Angeles. I picked this up
just a few miles before the I-215 freeway, while driving west on CA 74/79 (the
two highways share a few miles of road right here. It was completely dark,
being somewhere around 7 PM, with no streetlights along the road. Thus, I can't
tell you very much about it.

What I *can* tell you is that I crossed the Magic Circle while on the north side
of the highway, that the Ocotillo Mexican restaurant is a quarter-mile west of
the DP, on the south side of the road, and that 0.45 miles west of the DP there
is an ARCO gas station ($2.899 for regular unleaded) on the corner of Vista
Place, which is the northern extension of Winchester Road, which runs south of
the highway. I might have been able to get a lot closer to the center of this
dashpoint had I turned left on Winchester, and looked for the road that has the
house on it in which this DP allegedly is resting, but I opted to just keep on
keeping on; I still had two hours or so of driving ahead of me.

chaosmanor

Wherever you went, there you were; I'll never understand how major highways can
exist without streetlights, at least at the intersections of cross-streets.

I didn't get over to get this dashpoint until after another visit, seems there's
competition in NE PA now!
I was going to a funeral not far away, so I drove a few extra miles to get this
point. I turned off Hwy6/11 onto Old Trail and got to within 52 m, then I turned
onto Glenview and got a little closer to the point which was in an overgrown
field not far from an old building, probably a barn.
Then on to the funeral, but it was a beautiful day for a drive and the view
cheered me somewhat.

This location is in the yard of a home at the corner of Tall Pines Rd. & Kendall
Rd. in Campton Hills, IL, at the entrance to the Woodlands subdivision. There is
an low-lying area approximately 10m (N/S) x 7m (E/W) with tall grasses growing
in it, which likely retains water after heavy precipitation. The coords for this
location are right around the north end of that grassy area.

I love it when a player is scooped by another player. 'fess up everyone,
are you more annoyed that someone else visited a dashpoint before you or
are you thrilled to know someone else is hunting in your territory? I
guess there's a third answer: no one else has ever come close to where I
live. :-( or :-)

Game 102 dashpoints are available for review, in the usual place
(scroll to the list of games at the bottom of the home page at
http://geodashing.gpsgames.org ).

As usual, no points will be awarded for visits to any of these points
before game start on December 1, 2009.

No points will be awarded for visits to the current game's dashpoints
after November 30. All visits should be reported promptly, but if
your travel delays access to a computer, late reports of visits
completed before the end of the month will be accepted for scoring
through December 3.

In a recent GeoHash event lq pointed out that there's a close by GeoDash point
that needs to be visited in November. To night I finally made it to the exact
location. It was a dark and stormy night...well, actually only a little drizzle
falling and a pleasant 6 degrees Celcius (very rare at this time of the year).
I couldn't see much scenery, the photos by lq and Virvatuli tell the story best.
But I found an 'X marks the spot' construction (probably by lq), I'm gonna
attach a photo of it.

Choasmanor and I were working our way northward to Santa Cruz to pick up my
older son for college. I suggested this road trip and he readily agreed to it.
While plotting out the route, we realized that after getting an Argentinian
banner in Cambria to the west of here, we would be driving very close to this
dashpoint and it would be silly to not attempt this one.

We ended up finding this point located in a hilly field in the town of
Templeton. The fields sloped downward to the north and as we stood alongside
Santa Rita Rd., the point was to the south of us, about 25 feet from the road,
either in a mulch pile, or in a pine tree that was growing low to the ground.
The pine tree stood out, mainly because Santa Rita was lined and heavily shaded
with large oak trees.

The embankment leading up to the field and south of the road was about three
feet higher than the road. There was a series of irises planted at the edge of
the embankment, and because it was getting close to dusk, you could hear the
crickets chirping on this beautiful fall day along the central part of
California.

Elevation above sea level - 870 feet
Distance from home coordinates - 196.74 miles

As Webfoot has already stated, we found "A HOT" dashpoint on a cool Fall evening
in the wine country of California's Central Coast. We were heading to Santa
Cruz, where we would spend the night, go hiking the next morning to grab several
interesting caches in the redwoods (one of which would finally clear a DNF from
his slate that had been sitting there for seven years :-o), and then pick up his
older son before the long drive home. I was instantly attracted to this trip
when he proposed it, but it took some effort (and a little luck) to get things
to fall together so that I could join it. Sure glad it worked out :-D

As I mentioned above, this is one of several regions in The Golden State noted
for wine production; we had even turned onto Vineyard Road from CA 46 to get
this DP. Interestingly, there were no vines to be seen from this DP: just a few
homes on large lots, lots of trees and a few rolling hills. You won't hear me
complaining :-)

Webfoot mentioned a few details; so I'll mention a few different ones. Across
the road from the DP is a slope that flattens out about 40 feet below Santa Rita
road. Two homes in identical A-frame style were next to each other down there.
It is quite possible that they are actually part of the same lot and might be
connected, although I didn't see any such connector. Directly opposite the DP,
and just a couple of feet from where Webfoot parked, is a large wooden box -
about 2½ feet wide, maybe 4 feet deep and about the same high: roughly 1.3m x
1.3m x .8m - painted white, with a hole in the side facing the road; said hole
had a hinged cover, with the hinges on the top of the lid. I opened the lid and
saw nothing of interest inside, just leaves and dirt and cobwebs. We couldn't
come up with any reason for this box to be there: too close to the road for bee
boxes, far too large for birds, too awkward for other animals to use, too dirty
inside for most storage purposes. To quote Yul Brynner, "'Tis a puzzlement!"

I had been near this area once before for a gpsgame, so I was pretty sure the
road near the DP was gated, but that I could park at St Joseph's Cemetery and
walk the old roads to get closer. The rain last night made the old dirt roads
pretty muddy, but I followed the road til I was close to the quarry (where I
could hear heavy machinery working on Black Friday), then followed another dirt
road which led to a cleared high voltage power line, went up hill on power line
to meet the paved road which goes to a substation. Then I headed into the woods
to the top of the rise, decided that I was close enough (it is hunting season
and I'd seen 4 deer on my walk in), then headed back out and on to the dentist
to get my new crowns....
