Dear friends,

I want to model one slice of a braced excavation with FLAC3D in the following
manner:

1- piles in perimeter of the excavation are modeled.

2-Soil is excavated to a certain depth and the wall is covered with shotcrete.

3-First strut is installed.

Steps 2 & 3 are repeted until specified depth.

The problem is that when I model pile with structure element pile, the forces of
struts are too excessive unrealistically.

when I eliminate the pile, forces of struts are logical.

I don't know how model the pile.
your sincerely,

Azar Amirrajab

Try to use beam element to model the wall.  There are too many parameters in FLAC 3D pile element . Beam element is appropriate to obtain the bending moment and shear force of the wall.

Dear expert engineers,

This is a problem took place in a ring foundation of a steel tank with 70.meters Diameter to a friend of mine (as contractor of the project). How do you think? What is the reason for these cracks?

- Differential settlements?

- Poor concrete around cracked area?

- Concrete cover less than required?

-......

Consider the direction of cracks!

Dear Mr. Bagherzadeh,

Further to our msg. of yesterday, I would like to inform you that I faced a problem with our project in ahwaz so as following :

The foundation of our storage tank of 1 million barrel (under construction) has fracture in in side (as attached photoes tells before & after repair). I learnt from the information I received from site that, the coverage of concrete may involve or more. So, I wrote to you to inform you of problem and ask following question.

The foundation of Tank is shaped as Concrete Ring, so the middle of the ring has been filled with soil and compacted to degree of spec. Foundation has reinforced with rebar inside.

1- what is the reason for such crack or fraction on concrete foundation.
2- what is the ways to repair?
3- will it be extended?
4- Is it dangerous to us?

All the information which may required by your side is available here and by your question will be forwarded urgently.

Regards
M. Alizadeh

The key to resolving our predicament, when faced with a problem and the equations of static equilibrium do not suffice to determine a unique solution, lies in opening up our field of view to consider the displacements of points in the structure and the deformation of its members. This introduces new variables, a new genera of flora and fauna, into our landscape; for the truss structure the species of node displacements and the related species of uniaxial member strains must be engaged. For the frame structure made up of beam elements, we must consider the slope of the displacement and the related curvature of the beam at any point along its length.

The requirements for designing and detailing of steel frames is covered here so as to give them adequate strength, stability and ductility to resist severe earthquakes in all zones of IS:1893 without collapse. Frames not intended to resist earthquake loads need not satisfy the requirements of this section, provided they can accommodate the resulting deformation.
