Globular clusters are believed to have been formed between 12 and 16 billion years ago and can contain anything between ten thousand to one million stars contained in a volume between the low 10's to about 200 light years in diameter.

Globular clusters offer much to interest all types of amateur and professional astronomers. Visual observers often regard globular clusters as some of the most spectacular objects to be seen with small or medium sized telescopes while variable star enthusiasts are well catered for by the large number of short period variables that can be seen. CCD owners can have great fun in fine-tuning their image processing techniques as long exposures of globular clusters can yield breath-taking results.
