We have a joke site. The archives aren't available to anyone but the mods. We
delete each day's posts after a week.

We also have a debate group. Second one I've started. Old one, a relative of a
member snuck into the group & ended up wreaking havoc! So in this new one, we
also delete archives after a week.

People make up a new address, etc. & join a group they know someone else belongs
to. They go back, sometimes months, to see what a person had to say, they go
back to others who know the member & start trouble. Its hard to say what one
really thinks if what they write can get back to others!

As for deleting them; the fastest way I've found is to just do the one page at a
time. Do maybe 10 pages, then do more the next day, etc. Which reminds me....I
haven't deleted any in debate group for a while. ACK!

You need to go back and check your Files section for any auto send messages to your group and make the changes in each file.  If you Header and Footer were edited to include your original group name, you have to go in and change those as well.  The only thing changing your group name does functionally is it changes your group name.  All that other stuff must come from you.

I changed two group names this weekend.  It isn’t fun searching all that, but it is necessary.

The last word of your first sentence says it all on problems.  Yahoo tends to do upgrades and maintenance on the weekends when they are under the impression we do not use our groups as much.  They forget or ignore that the world typically lives 24/7 and is used to instant gratification and wanting it all to work smoothly when WE want it.  Not so Grasshopper!  They have to do maintenance sometime…expect it to be the weekend.

I am with you, Donna, all the way. I have been a member of Groups where I had
counted on having access to messages, only to be disappointed by the actions of
the Owner.

If an Owner gets tired of Owning their Group, why not simply close it for new
messages instead of zapping the content that your members worked hard to
contribute to the Group?

It's an offer/receive group which generates hundreds of emails per week - we
really don't need the archives from 2004 of trading messages, know what I
mean? It just bogs down the system for data we have no use for. I'm
interested in keeping a year's worth and that's really overkill.

Sometimes it takes a few days or even a couple of weeks for things to jell and show in searches.  Last night I created two new groups.  One was almost immediately showing in the search, the other showed up in search tonight.

While in your ID, go to the home page.  Look up at the address bar for the web address for your group and copy that box.  Paste it in an email to the people not finding it in a search.  When they click on the web address for your group home page, they will see your home page and have access to the Join option.

There are two factors: your email service/software, and your group's settings.

The groups message poster (Post and Reply links on your group's Messages pages)
does not support attachments, so the first requirement is to post your
newsletter by email.

The second factor is your group's Attachment setting. The group may be set to
exclude attachments, to remove them from the message and store them on site, or
to pass them through with the message (but not save a copy on site).

There are good reasons to delete messages. When a message is posted, the
original poster may, at any time, request that it (or any or all of their posts)
be deleted. At the 2008 Roundtable it was suggested that a tool be developed
where the moderator could delete all the messages tied to a specific address or
ID. In some groups, such as a collaborative writing group, if a member leaves
they don't want their material being in a location they have no control over.

But when the message comes to their email there is no text in the body.

Is anyone else having this problem? If so, does anyone know the reason?

I have several groups in Croatian language, and I found that, whenever I
deal with general population (i.e. non-technically oriented people) the
language barrier proved to be too high.
Despite creating detailed instructions with screenshots many people find
it difficult to join and use Yahoo! groups in English and prefer to use
Google groups and Facebook groups which both, I believe exist in Croatian.
I would like to stick with Yahoo! and help translate menus and the rest

Thank you Shal for responding to my question. I have everything set correctly on
the management part, I guess what I don't understand is how emailing from my
email account is going to get my message to the group. Is there a way to email
your entire group without plugging in each email address? I get that I am
missing something really obvious here, but it is just not making sense to me.
Are you saying that you post your message from your regular email account
somehow?

Yes, of course. Glad to hear (off list) that you figured this one out.

The email address for posting a message is listed at the bottom of the

Yahoo does localize Groups for some regions, but apparently not yet Croatia.
There are some international links at the bottom of the Groups home page. I see
"Asia • Argentina • Australia & NZ • Brazil • Canada • France • French Canada •
Germany • Hong Kong • India • Italy • Japan • Mexico • Spain • Taiwan • UK &
Ireland"
<http://groups.yahoo.com/>

I've no idea how Yahoo decides which areas to localize, nor how you might reach
the appropriate party with your offer to help. I note another offer to translate
to Croatian a couple months ago on the suggestion board (or maybe that's you):

Hello Kerren/Scottie,

An "attachment" by definition, doesn't go "in the body of text"
but is a separate file. Assuming you're posting to your group
by sending e-mail to your group's address, and the group allows
attachments by its group settings, then how you attach the file
depends on your e-mail client; consult its manual if you don't
know how.

If you're posting to the group via the Yahoo! Groups web interface,
I don't think it supports attachments.

I hope this answers your questions.

      - Rich

[Mod note: Web-based posting doesn't support discreet attachments,
but it does support Rich Text Format (HTML) formatting.]

That wasn't me, but I could sign all that. I don't expect Yahoo! to spend their resources translating in less spoken languages as Croatian, but I don't see a problem why not let volunteers translate interface. Even having multiple translations on the same language, so people can choose which one they want to use.

"See also Gordon's comments on this suggestion: <http://suggestions.yahoo.com/detail/?prop=groups&fid=73367>"
That was my comment at the bottom ;-) .
The frustrating thing is that most of those requests and offers are more then an year old, and nothing has changed since.
Obviously, for the old groups it's too complicated to transfer them to Google or Facebook groups, but for the new ones, I find it difficult to convince people to create Yahoo! IDs, while most of them already have Google or Facebook profiles.
I'm trying to stick with Yahoo as I'm already familiar how it works, have prepared instructions and manuals etc.
But it's only me, who's pushing them towards Yahoo!, with nothing in sight that would help me in the future. It seems that I'll have to adjust to the majority if nothing changes in the near future.
Regards
Nik

There are a widely divergent opinions about this.

Some group owners are very hostile to other groups "stealing" their members,
some feel that any off-list contact to their members is automatically evil spam.
Others are ok with it.

One thing you can do is write to the owners of the other group (via the -owner
address) and ask their permission to announce your group in theirs. The form
that takes depends on the group, it could be an allowed message, it could be
just adding your group's URL to your signature when you post there, or it could
be as an entry in their Links section if they have or would allow a "Related
Groups" folder.

It is technically feasible to use the Invite mechanism to invite the members of
that other group, but whether it is good etiquette depends a lot on the nature
of the group and your participation in it. Using the Invite mechanism with
someone you don't know, other than as an entry in the Members list of a group,
is poor etiquette and could result in a complaint that gets your account shut
down. Note Guideline 5 and TOS 6n (which would apply if your invitations could
be considered "spam").

*SIGH* and Happy Holidays to them too! These two are the ones that
bother me most right now:

•File Auto Delivery issue
•Message Search Issues

It's so frustrating to have to say to new members....Do a search in
the Message archives for that topic.....but you won't get anything
later than March 2009. I know in the overall scheme of things in the
world, that's not a biggie but what the heck is their problem? Did
they lay off too many people who knew what they were doing?

This always gets me! If someone is a member of a group they enjoy, how can anyone "steal" tham??? And why can't someone be in more than 1 group?? I'm in 3 Xmas groups!! And yes, I do take a recipe or craft, etc., & send it to the other groups sometimes. Unless its something the poster made up themselves, its public knowledge, right?
IMO, it IS rude to join a group just to advertise your own. That's why the ones I'm owner or mod of have it where all new members are moderated until they become a pert of the group. If they never participate, they never get unmoderated. IMO, its also good to keep the membership list private.

There are a widely divergent opinions about this.

Some group owners are very hostile to other groups "stealing" their members, some feel that any off-list contact to their members is automatically evil spam. Others are ok with it.

One thing you can do is write to the owners of the other group (via the -owner address) and ask their permission to announce your group in theirs. The form that takes depends on the group, it could be an allowed message, it could be just adding your group's URL to your signature when you post there, or it could be as an entry in their Links section if they have or would allow a "Related Groups" folder.

It is technically feasible to use the Invite mechanism to invite the members of that other group, but whether it is good etiquette depends a lot on the nature of the group and your participation in it. Using the Invite mechanism with someone you don't know, other than as an entry in the Members list of a group, is poor etiquette and could result in a complaint that gets your account shut down. Note Guideline 5 and TOS 6n (which would apply if your invitations could be considered "spam").
