For best results, you should make your Files page open to non-
members then even casual visitors will see your image.

Management --> Web Tools --> Edit --> Files / Photos --> CHECK
"Public (anyone, including non-members, can view files)"

Unfortunately, we aren't given more tools to control access to those
areas... it's either all or nothing.  To make matters worse, Group
Photos is really some kind of bastardized relation of the Yahoo
Briefcase (thus the problems with animations and sizing).

At the rate things are improving in Y!Groups, we'll should never have
to worry about this being a premium, for-fee service. (Still feel
like complaining?) LOL!

OT:

Just for kicks and giggles the other day, I turned off my HOSTS file
and accepted launch of some flash-crap ad here at Yahoo. I then
clicked the resulting ad box. THAT click resulted in TWO pop-UPS and
TWO pop-UNDERS, PLUS opening the ad in the original browser window!
This had to ALL come from the ad since I don't have ANY spyware or
junk loaded AT ALL! Amazing how annoying these sites are getting.
What is the point?

Try changing your settings so that you have to approve new members to
stop those you don't want joining, from doing so.

There are no limits to how many Yahoo IDs (or logins) you can have.
Of course, Yahoo doesn't recommend this because getting multiple
logins to work can sometimes be a problem.  Corrupted login cookies
and login conflicts between Companion, Messenger and the IE browser
are somewhat common.  We see posts about it from time-to-time here

While it all seems fairly sensible to me, I guess what isn't so clear
is maybe how it all works with Yahoo Groups??? ...

You can have up to SIX DIFFERENT email addresses associated with your
SIX Yahoo profiles on that SINGLE YAHOO LOGIN, but only ONE of those
addresses can be a Yahoo.Com address and it must be tied to the Yahoo
ID's login.  Of course, to actually USE any of these email addresses
to join a group they must first be verified by email!  Watch for and
follow the wonderfully obscure "Verify" link on your listed email
addresses on the aforementioned Account Info page!

And how those email addresses work in Groups...

Yahoo! Groups TRACKS membership in a Group by EMAIL address (NOT
Yahoo Profile!);  even in groups where you may elect to HIDE your
email and IP information (as you and I do here at CM)!  In every
post's View Source (AKA Full Header), there is an u=######## value
appended to the original email's header.  THAT value is unique and
associated with the email address used and is revealed even when you
elect to HIDE your email and IP information (as you and I do here at
CM).

Your post shows this in View Source: "X-Yahoo-Group-Post: member;
u=123456789"

The u=######## is also useful in constructing quick member edit or
delete for moderators who want to deal with recurring nuisances and
can't wait for the 'replicated database' to update the member list
(thus providing a link to edit the obnoxious member).

This makes no sence to me I come across 100's of groups with "0"
members & 0 messages- why is yahoo leaving them in the directory? But
then tell someone they will delete their inactive group? For instance
there are over 5000 car groups & the last ten pages or more are ghost
groups with no members....

I have had problems with posts not appearing on three of my Groups
since Friday. Is this across the board? I do not see reports? I was
able to make one post this morning, as was another member, but none

Yes, all three Groups are in the same catagory. And, I noted tonight that when I
went to "Links" that it gave me a "Server Error". Now, also, Group members are
reporting having all the mail they sent to Groups since Friday returned by a
Mailer Demon at
ahoo. So I suspect this is not imagination.

Might it be some kind of spam filtering at your provider?

Your bounce history shows repeated soft bounces all during March for
server time-outs:

"Mail server for "[xxx]" unreachable for too long"

[Group-Name] group also re-directs the clueless who actually use a
link to [Group-Name].

I spoke with my ISP last night.  They assured me that any spam
addressed to my address doesn't get denied.  As my ISP
provides "Postini" (which I opted to take advantage of months ago),
all spam (as well as some emails which aren't spam) get deposited
into my Postini inbox (Postini also scans all incoming mail for
viruses).  I choose which messages in the Postini inbox get deleted
or delivered.  My ISP believe, the problem originates with Yahoo,
and I would have to agree.

Yahoo says you have bounced if the email was just routed through a
slow route and Yahell doesn't receive the acknowledgement packet it
expects to get within a certain time frame. So, route that is chosen
as well as other internet traffic can make a big difference. And it
usually has nothing at all to do with your ISP. Of course it can also
bounce things if you don't pick up mail like I couldn't when my PC
died for a few days. But most usually it is sthe amount of time it
takes before they receive their "got it" packet back.

When I invite people to my group, the "confirmation" page after
submitting the names will come back with three lists --

Members invited

Already members

Not processed

OK, if "members invited" are those who actually are mailed an
invitation ... "already members" are not mailed invites because they
already belong to our group (maybe under another Yahoo ID) ... what
does "not processed" mean?

By the way, I also occasionally get a list of "does not accept
invites" from people who have their invitation feature turned off, so
I know it's not that.

What does "not processed" stand for?

no idea how Yahoo could enforce this.

I am a one of a team of moderators for a group that has a relatively
small amount of space in our message area.

Currently, we just go through the messages while looking at expanded
version and mark for deletion.  I would love to be able to do a
Search on OT: and have it give me a list of all messages that are
marked OT: and at the same time give me a deletion option.

and then delete at that point??

Currently we are doing Spring Cleaning in our group and as part of
our cleaning we are encouraging them to use the Subj lines

The best you could do is click on Threaded and delete messages
that way, or take it a step further and click on Expanded then
Threaded.  This way it will expand the messages by thread and
provide the check boxes to delete each message.

Your Expanded/Threaded link for your group would look similar
to this:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YOUR_GROUP/messages/xxxxxx?
threaded=1&expand=1

Of course where you see YOUR_GROUP you replace with your group
name and where the xxxxx is gets replaced with whatever message
the expanded/threaded view starts with.

The method I mentioned above might be the easiest and quickest
way to go, then you and your moderators can pick a thread and
delete messages by thread.

You could try to find a feedback form to request it, but that's
about all it would be is a request.  Yahoo! more than likely
wouldn't add something like this.

Even if someone changes the subject line of a post he or she is
replying to, it will still remain in the same thread of the
original post.  At least it should in most groups.

        I have a few questions about propriety for YA'll.
  I make a practice of searching the Yahoo member lists for people who
list in their profile intrests the mediccal conditions that my groups
(Fibromyalgia/CFS and EpilepySupportForAll) deal with. I then look in
the profiles that come up for things such as "would like to talk to
others with FM", or "am trying to learn more..", ect. I then copy the
profile, and using it compose an invitation to the group using the
INVITE feature.
  I keep a list of those I send invitations to, and never send a
second invite unless contacted and requested to.
  I have never recieved a negetive responce or complaint from anyone I
have sent an invitation to, perhaps because I assure them it is a one
time only invitation, and the p[ersonal nature of each invitation,
making it obvious that it is NOT a bulk mailing.
  In another owners group, the subject came up, and several members
were very upset at the idea of sending unsoliceted invitations, and
went so far as to say that should they recieve an invitation like
that they would try to get Yahoo abuse to delete the group and the
sender.
  My questions are, do any of you use the INVITE feature this way,
would it upset any of you to recievce a personal invite sent through
INVITE, and what is your take on it's propriety or do you concider it
abuse of the invite feature?
  I never concidered that it would be wrong to do this untill the
practice was attacked in that other group. If I hear enough replies
that it is wrong, I will discontinue the practice.

Hi Ya'll,
    I own a couple of medicaly based support groups, so my type of
group is a little different, and maybe that colors my thought process
on rules.
  First, I DO believe that most lists/groups do need a few simple
rules. The main thing is to keep it very simple, send them to each
new member, and not unmoderate them untill they have responded to the
list of rules per the request at the bottom of the list. The list of
rules I use is short enough to be included in the welcome message.
  Mine are as follows:
  No spamming for a page or product that you will profit from.
  No political posts except as relate to advocacy for the medical
conditions covered in this group.
  No religious posts other than holiday wishes (a short reference to
your faith in your signature is OK)
  Do not advertise for your group without asking the owner first and
giving me an opportuenity to check it out and aprove  or disaprove
the request.
  Treat all other members with curtesy, kindness and respect - no name
calling, or putting down other members.

  My moderators I do hold to a higher standard, and when I ask someone
to concider being a moderator, I also send them a list of what I
expect of them in that role, the rules I have for my moderators, and
discuss the vision I have for the group. I then ask them to read,
reread, and think about it for a week before accepting.

  If a moderator violates my rules for the mods, or for the group,
their moderator privaleges are perminately revoked at once - no
second chances for mods. If a member breaks these simple rules, they
are placed on moderated status for 7 days for the first offence, 30
days for the second, and removed from the group for 30 days for the
third. If they want to return after the 30 days, I keep them on
moderated status untill I am sure that they have gotten the message.
I usually use the 50 post test, keeping a tab running of the number
of posts and going through them after 50 have been made.
  I know that this is a little bit of over kill, but since my groups
are medicaly based and deal with conditions that are often accompnied
by severe deppresion and the attendant occassional irrational thought
patterns, I have found that I have to go to these extremes to keep
peace in the groups.
  By the way, I have only had to remove two members since I came up
with this plan a year ago, and they both came back as model members,
in fact, one of these persons was later asked to be a mod, and is now
one of the most active and supportive members in the larger group!

      I personaly feel that while spamm should be deleted without
comment, if a mod declines a post or removes it from the message
archive, then they owe that member an explanation of why the post was
not approved or removed. This notification should be in a freindly
tone and invite the member to remain active, and also to edit their
post to allow it's acceptance.
  Yes, this takes a little work, but if you do not want to be
subjected to the work involved in owning/moderating a group, then
don't own or moderate a group. sending out a private explanation is
just basic curtesy.

IMO, that's the proper way to use the Invite tool on your group.
Lots of people use a practice called 'list harvesting' and while
they don't see anything wrong with it, it's not really a good
habit to get into.

If you search for members through the Yahoo! member directory
(http://members.yahoo.com)  and invite from there, then you are
using the features as they are intended to be used.

If you invite by ID as oppsed to email address, you may want to
include in your personal note to the member that you do not have
access to their email address even though the invite was sent to
them via email (inviting by ID will automatically send the invite
to whichever email address the person uses as their primary address)

Yes, lots of people do consider it unsolicited email, but if you
keep track of the people you invite and make sure not to invite
the same person more than once, Yahoo! will see that you are using
the feature responsibly and won't delete your group just because
a few people complained about you inviting them.  If that was the
case, I don't see why they would even provide an Invite tool for
groups in the first place.

I look at it this way...if I get an invite to a group I have no
interest in joining, I delete the invitation.  If I keep getting
an invitation to the same group, I will first try to contact the
moderator and politely ask him/her to stop inviting me.  If he/
she persists, then I will report him/her to Yahoo!

I personally *don't* think it's abuse of the feature the way you
decribed you do it. However, I don't like getting invites from
complete strangers.  Somehow, I feel *violated*, maybe even spammed,
but that is just me.  So, I choose not to use the invite feature in
that way.  My groups get new members by word of mouth of current
members (current members inviting their friends to join) or by others
finding us in the directory.

In my opinion, the invite feature is there to use.  If it wasn't meant to be
used, it wouldn't be there in the first place.

If a Yahoo Groups member DOES NOT wish to receive invites to any
groups, they can go to http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs and click on
the "Opions" link, and UNCHECK the box next to "Allow group
moderators to invite me to their groups".  This is something that is
very easy to do and can take less than a minute.

It seems that the brains at Yahoo have started inserting their
obnoxious ads in the messages, even tho we've checked the 'view in
expanded' box to get away from this crap. Is this now a hopeless
situation? They should just change the name to Spamhoo! and be done
with it.

  I had not concidered it before, but I believe from now on I will
include a similar instruction line in all my stranger invites. Thanks
for a giving me this idea, one that I am sure will be appreciated by
those I invite who do not wish to be, and do not know how to prevent
it.
