Welcome to the Yahoo! Group Managers Forum. This group was the former
Club Founders Forum (CFF) and was converted from a Yahoo! Club into a
Yahoo! Group which we then renamed as GMF. You are receiving this
automated message as a member of our GroupManagersForum. We are glad
you took the time to join our group.

We would like all members to please note the following:

* Our GMF Group's web resources are very open. Our web-based content,
(message archives, bookmarks) is viewable/searchable by non-members.

* All members are expected to act and post responsibly.

* To prevent spam and other abuse, new members are automatically placed
in moderated status.

* Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GroupManagersForum/join to
check your GMF membership options. You may elect to conceal your
email and IP address from moderators and members alike. This limits
you to posting only from the web site, but it preserves your privacy
to a greater extent than possible when using email. Due to the extremely
open nature of the web-based content areas at GMF, we recommend you try
this handy, but underated Yahoo! Groups option.

* You may choose to get GMF messages individually, in a Daily Digest,
Special Notices, or no email at all. If using Daily Digest and posting
by email, please trim the Digest portion of the message before posting.

GMF Goal:

To build a place, not a mailing list. A virtual community, not a group.

GMF Mission Statement:

Would you like to be a better Yahoo! Group Owner and/or Moderator?
Would you like to see even more improvements in Yahoo! Groups? We
discuss our experiences as both group Owners and Moderators, share
ideas for promoting and customizing the content areas, and offer
various techniques for managing groups. We strive to be a resource
of the HIGHEST QUALITY for Owners and Moderators alike. We allow as
much information as possible from our group to be accessed by visitors!

GMF History:

Yahoo! announced the acquisition of eGroups on 6-28-00 and launched
Yahoo!Groups on 1-25-01. The migration of Clubs to Groups began on
2-6-02. Our club converted on 2-14-02. You will sometimes see Yahoo!
Clubs that were converted to Groups referred to as "Grubs."

That number is not terribly reliable. I have noticed that number
changes if I modify a photo in my group. For example I change the
photo names all the time to be the members yahoo ID .. that adds to
the "new photo" total.

I have a link saved of my photo section sorted in date order and in
list view mode. Makes checking the additions easier.

It would be very nice if the owner could get notification of new
photos.

Apparently, Yahoo has changed something in the software, and I'm
loking for a fix.

The problem is in accessing the list of members. Used to be that it
behaved like one single long list, in that you could (if you had the
time) keep clicking the "Next" button and go through that list from
A to Z. Of course, there were entry points along the bottom of the
pages so that you could, for example, click on the letter "S" and
the list would open up at the beginning of the "S" names. And from
there, you could click "Next" to go forward through the list, or
click "Previous" to go back and see the end of the "R" names.

Now, they treat it like 26 separate lists. If you click "S", the
page that comes up lists (for example) 1-30 of 114. But these 30
names are not in any alphabetic order. Nor do all the log-on names,
or all the e-addresses, necessarily start with "S", although one or
the other name on a given line usually will.

The "Previous" button is not active: from the first part of "S" you
cannot go back to the last part of "R". But the real killer is
this:

Clicking the "Next" button takes you to a page that lists 31-
204554696 of 114. And on THAT page, the "Next" button is
inoperative. So there is no way I can review all 141 of my "S"
names, nor even find where they may be scattered.

Sorry for the length, but I did not know how to describe the problem
more succinctly.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks in advance.

If you click on Management, then under Group Settings on the
right, click on the Membership link. Click on the Edit link
next to Membership Type and Welcome Message. There are options
there to set your group as a closed (unlisted, private, invite
only) group or set it to restricted membership (you approve
all requests for membership). I believe that closed groups
are defaulted to not listed in the directory and cannot be
changed. The only way someone can view the group is to be
a member. Once you set the group that way, it cannot be
changed.

To just have it listed or not listed in the directories, go
back to the main Management page, click on the Edit link next
to Description and Appearance and under the Description area,
there is a check box to make the group listed or unlisted in
the Yahoo! Groups directories. Remember, even if you have it
unlisted, if it's an open group, anyone who knows the URL for
your group can still get there just by typing it into the address
bar.

Halstead

The photo I am sure you are speaking of was taken by an AP
Photograhoer Nick Ut. He won a Pulitzer Prize for that photo. He
news photographer and I am sure that image is copywrited by the AP.
It can only be used if a royalty is paid and you have the
permission.

Yahoo acts quickly on copywrited material. Especially one so easily
identifable as Ut's photo of Phan Thi Kim Phuc.

I think that the observation that it was due to the child being nude
is probably what triggered a complaint to yahoo .. they immediately
recognized it as a copywrited photo and removed it.

No censorship here whatsoever ..

I noticed the same in my group. I had 108 "m" members and can only
access the first 103 when I hit next that page showed up as 0-0 of
108.

I did notice all the members were listed in order by their email
address all that started with M anyway. There were some members names
that didnt start with M but their email did.

BTW if the member does not reveal their email address in groups their
name still falls in the alpha order where it would be if it was
showing. Instead of the email for that person it shows the "Not
disclosed" disclaimer.

Another lovely yahoo glitch it appears.

Did you report this? (your explanation was clear enough to me)

If this what I think it is - it's the most published and most recognized photo
of the Viet war - and a Pulitzer Prizer winner. The girl runs for her life as
napalm has burned her skin and clothes off.
It may have been a copywrite violation - instead of the content. Although some
prudes may see just a naked girl - not the anguish and fear that captures the
war in a single photo.

No, I did not report this. I am inexperienced in dealing with

Thank you for your reply. I had been starting to wonder if it was a

be hard to do.
I veryfied the accound...and went to "Add e-mail" entered the new

wanted to add did not belong to a valid account.
But I can enter the account with PW and write and read mails froom
there...so it has to be valid.

Do i only have to wait a bit till yahoo regognizes the new account or
what did I do wrong here.

Any suggestions welcome.

As always, reply to any nonsensical, quoting the entire original

You cannot add a yahoo email address to a yahoo account.

This is the message (in red) that I got across the top of
the page when I tried to add a yahoo email address to another
yahoo ID:

Please enter an email address not associated with an existing
Yahoo! account, or activate Yahoo! Mail for this new account.

So if I understood your question correctly, you were having
problems adding a yahoo.com address to another yahoo.com
account. Simple answer, it can't be done.

I see you're using AOL. Be sure you're not using AOL's built-in
custom version of Internet Exploder. Use the regular stand-alone IE
or dowload and install Firefox.

Make sure your file names have no spaces in them. While Windows and
Macs don't care about names like "Hi there its me.gif" it is NOT the
same as "Hi_there_its_me.gif" and Yahoo servers do not accept files
named that way. Make sure your file names are correct format.

Make sure your file sizes are less than 5 megs and that your group's
file area is not closing in on its maximum size. Even if you think
you're uploading under the total bytes allowed, it's still an inexact
approximation... close but not over may end up with an error instead
of upload success.

I'm sorry. It is GEOCITIES that forbids spaces in uploaded file
names. I always get this mixed up.

From the Geocities Uploads page at:
http://geocities.yahoo.com/v/ul.html

> Transfer files from your computer to your main directory with this
> simple tool.
>
> First click on Browse... to select files, then click Upload Files.

[Note limitations do NOT apply when using FTP to upload.]

From Yahoo Groups help:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/files/files-03.html

Each group has 20 megabytes server space allocated for Files. You can
upload any number of smaller files (up to the limit of 20 megabytes)
or a few larger files. Note, however, that each individual file you
upload has a 5 megabyte limit per upload. If you attempt to upload a
single file that is larger than the space remaining, or that is
larger than 5 megabytes, you will get an error.

Note: If your group fills up the space and you want to add more
files, you'll need to delete existing files. Or, you can use the
Links area to point to other locations on the Web where your group
stores files.

------

Considering Yahoo groups integration into other Yahoo services, it
might be better to err on side of caution and avoid use of spaces in
file uploading.

If spaces are the problem and their removal makes it work, would it
be easier to complain to Yahoo or just stop using spaces?

Even though the Yahoo! Groups files areas do allow the uploading
of files with spaces in the name to the files area, I've had
problems in the past when trying to link to them even when using
the proper URL that's sent in the notification of a file upload.

that it does no good at all to complain to Yahoo, that they don't provide

Same problem here. No spaces or "illegal" characters in filename, file
is under 5MB, enough space in the file section of the group. Upload
seems to fail at around the 1MB mark.

Error is "cannot find server" or "connection refused by remote server"
depending on the browser used to upload.

Any ideas? Is this something deliberate by Yahoo...?

Are you running any "web accelerator" enhancement? You know... the
snake oils advertised in stuff from AOL, Netzero, Earthlink, and so
on... Also applies to third-party add-on "download accelerators"
(like the spyware-laden DAP.EXE) and so on... Besides being mostly
snake-oil, these applets play havok with uploading and downloading
esp. archives (.ZIP), and script or CGI-based files. HP's support
pages tell people to disable this snake-oil before downloading any
support or driver update files.

Have you checked your PC for spyware, malware, adware, hijackers,
trojans and other pests?

What programs are you running in background when this happens? Are
you running more than one Yahoo login at the same time? (Like Yahoo!
Messenger on ID/password login yaboohoo_1 while IE is uploading on a
completely different ID/password - yaboohoo_2?)

What browser are you running? Is it only in Mozilla/Firefox? Is it
IE? What version? What plug-ins or BHOs is it infested with?

Is the file in use by another program on your PC? (IOW... Do you
have it open in PhotoShop, PhotoDraw or some other editor while
trying to upload it to your group?

Is it an animated .GIF file? (For use as group image?) Besides not
being allowed in the PHOTOS area of a group, Yahoo servers, when
saving any GIF, increase their size by huge proportions. A 1 meg
animated GIF from your local PC will baloon to over EIGHT TIMES
that size when saved by Yahoo's servers!!! We've mentioned this
before - as far back as 2001 - nothing's changed as far as Yahoo's
saving of GIFs - they are still HUGE. Why? Thejackofclubs once
speculated that Yahoo refuses to pay the royalty fees needed to
save and server COMPRESSED GIF files. (Old story... look up Unisys
and GIF on Google.)

I think the above makes it abundantly clear why most places, Yahoo
included, find diagnosing usage problems difficult if not impossible.

It might be new -unpublished- Yahoo limits? It might be you're
trying to upload an infected file or a file that may be tagged as
suspicious? (Don't expect Yahoo to publish limits since the bots
used by abusers, scammers and spammers will take whatever value is
published, subtract a small increment and spew forth their crap.)
Don't blame or complain about any responsible free site for not
publishing its limits.

Of course, after all that and more, it could just be a Yahoo server
hicupping at an inopportune time.

When it comes to FREE services like Y!Groups, it is YOUR
responsibility to eliminate local problems BEFORE contacting the
service host. And when you do contact Yahoo for help, it is again
YOUR responsibility to contact the correct area and clearly,
accurately, and politely articulate and explain the problem.

Use the CORRECT web form - DO NOT USE EMAIL - to initiate the report.

Start by clicking on the first folder listed here to find one:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GroupManagersForum/links .

In your case, that sounds like:
http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/groups/cgi_files .

After (or if) Yahoo replies (by email and hope yout mail doesn't send
it to a spam folder!), reply to that reply, restating/clarifying your
problem AND quoting - in its entirety - the email reply you got from
Yahoo.

Good luck.

Due to spyware/adware/malware/etc. infestations, our store no longer
performs PC upgrades and diagnostic services. It's too much a Pandora's
box. {Who has NEVER had to reinstall Winblows to fix a software problem.)
"Defrag" - the most useless and overused word on PC tech help forums.
Defrag has never solved a single PC or Windows problem, but it does
frequently cause them.

I'm betting the person concerned has 56KB line. Right?

There is a time limit on file movement on Yahoo! If you don't get it done in
that limit, you are cut off. The limit is such that you can move just a bit
more than 1 MB at 56KB without getting just down. (The limit is about 1.5 MB
but 1 MB is a safe guide line.)

There are file splitting programs out there. They are free and easy to use.
However, they are a support nightmare. (You have to explain their use, how
to get them, etc. Notice I'm NOT offereing details:-))))

More to the point, Do you have the right to post the 5 MB file? If so,
that's a lot of creative effort on your part and you are to be
congratulated. Remember, the essense of the copyright law is that if you
didn't create it you have no right to copy or distrubute it. (Yes there are
certain very narrowly defined exceptions, but treat this as the general
principle.)

Al

Let me translate what Al is saying here. You're uploading into a
transient (TEMP) space on a server. From that space, the file is
permanently saved ("moved" is how Al put it) by Yahoo. On most
servers, this would occur when the upload is complete. Al is saying
that this "movement" must occur in a given time frame or Yahoo's
server gives up and renders you an error. If you are working with
a large enough file, OR a slow enough upload speed, this frequently
occurs at around the 1 megabyte point.

And it does appear that "SaltMunkey" is on some kind of caching ISP
server/router. Interesting traceroute result on your originating IP.

62.252.32.11  = cdif-cache-1.server.ntli.net

As Al mentions, work with smaller files. Yahoo Groups is much less
than ideal when used as a file trading venue.

<< The general consensus from the various moderators lists that I sub

don't provide support because groups are a free service. >>

True, it's a free service. But that's because it's advertising
supported. It's reasonable to assume that advertisers would like to
advertise to a group of "happy campers" rather than to a bunch of
prospects who are feeling disgruntled, upset, ignored, frustrated, or
maybe even angry. In business, it's been shown consistently that
companies who really EMPHASIZE keeping their customers happy, do
better.

A good example of that in the tech field is Dell. I've subscribed to
PC Magazine for a LONG time. In recent years Dell has been at the TOP
of the PC Magazine customer satisfaction ratings, consistently. The
data is gathered from PC Magazine readers. Is it just a coincidence
that Dell is also so successful as a business? I sure don't think so.

Another tech field example WAS WordPerfect. When they had a first
class customer service department they were in very close touch with
their customers. They got direct feedback from their customers
regarding what was needed and wanted. In Word Processing, they
were "king of the hill". Then new owners (Novelle)came along and they
abandoned the "stay close to your customers" strategy and WP tumbled
down the hill.

So I believe that if Yahoo were to make listening to their customers
and RESPONDING to their customers' quality complaints a priority,
then Yahoo, their advertisers, and Yahoo forum customers would all
end up being much happier.
