The message search feature has been broken for some time now.

[OLDONLINER: I tried again, still does not work for me - I cannot drag any of
the Groups at all any more. It may have something to do with the number of
Groups I am member of (lots ;-)]

[Mod note: Just went and tested this at http://groups.yahoo.com/ and
it worked without issues. Scroll down, click "Organize" and drag and
release and then hit Save Changes.]

The MyGroups list on
http://groups.yahoo.com/
has been broken for some time. I believe I have already mentioned this at GMF,
but cannot find it here with Message Search.

Anyway, this is a fairly major annoyance for me, and for others who are no-email
members at YG. In order to participate in discussions at several Groups, I
need the ability to sort my Groups dynamically. But this feature is not working
at YG, even though it does not show up on the issues* list at:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/ownmod/index.html

Apparently it is not considered as a top priority for the YG team, so it won't
be fixed anytime soon:

Sigh…

* Top Known Issues
• The name listed as Author when I post a message from my group website has
changed - why?
• When I post a message to my group I'm getting a pop-up about sharing my
updates and I can't get past it - why?
• The member information on the Members page in my group is blank - why?
• I'm experiencing issues with the Message Search feature.
• My polls are not automatically closing.
• Why aren't my files being auto delivered?
• My group was mistakenly moved behind the adult wall when the group has no
adult content.

Daily digest is a good choice. Weekly isn't an option. You can also use Grouply
to fetch your messages, but I don't like multi-purpose social networking sites
all that much. Perhaps I haven't used them enough to feel comfortable with them,
but I see security issues in the news from time to time on the big social
networking sites.

Grouply gives group managers some nice tools, though, all in one place.

Another option, if you want to keep your inbox clean, is to just set yourself to
no mail and read all messages online, or set to no mail and use PG Offline
reader, which is easy to use, or one of the open source tools (that are
difficult at best to set up) to do your message gathering separate from your
inbox.

One more option you might consider is to set up your email so that message
filters put messages from GMF into a folder called GMF, messages from group2
into a folder named group2, etc. That way you get to those messages when YOU
want to and don't have to work around them to read the "important" messages in
your inbox from friends, relatives, banks, etc.

Using a file in the Files section of this group, if I open the file and copy the
URL from the browser, I get something like this:

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/UDn-Sip69T2_e1NR33nxy-jvRrmeIQpY7BYzarXxwBfWeimo0CF\
Di2UHn5LqPxa86yMKpuBRpzVc69va0nXca36DPHTD58lg3B4AQg/Helps/Hosts.000

This is dynamically generated from a database. It will NOT find the file, ever
again.

Instead, you have to add the filename to the URL for the folder, like this:
folder
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GroupManagersForum/files/Helps/
filename Hosts.000

Resulting URL
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GroupManagersForum/files/Helps/Hosts.000>

If there is a space in the filename it must be replaced with %20

Hi, Yuh . . . go to the link at the bottom of this message where it says
"Visit My Group". This will take you to GMF home page.

Presuming you are signed into Yahoo, select "Edit Membership" (to the
right of "Group Member -") just above the GMF banner and below the banner
on the upper left side of the page.

This will take you to where you can scroll down to step #2 and simply
change it to "Daily Digest".

You need set your membership to be notified when a new file is added to your
group, you will get that notice to your e-mail that will then contain the link
you need to use that will work correctly.

Those links are "dynamic", they are generated by Yahoo servers at
time of use, and will soon expire. On the plus side, during their
brief life, those links work for NON members, too.

What you need to use is the "static" link to the file(s), one that
never changes and works only for members. That link exists and you
can "construct" if you understand the syntax. (And here is a good
place to mention that this is easier to do when your the files in
your Group's Files area and the Folders in the Group's Files area
do NOT contain spaces in their names.)

Using GMF as example:

The "dynamic" URL, generated on the fly by Yahoo Groups servers, and
pointing to GMF's New members info message, looks like this garbage:

XANoqQU7QfyYpHmDO7u6yaauKk7Em9l9WU/Group_Files/GMF_Information.txt>

The "static" URL to that same file, looks like:

ion.txt>

You will note how the ending path matches in both URLs - that's the
folder name and the file name. The first part is made from the usual
path to the group's file page. You need to edit a URL to merge them,
thusly:

Take the left column - Files link:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/GroupManagersForum/files

and then you add /folder and file name to it:

/Group_Files/GMF_Information.txt

and, to shorten it, remove the prefix "tech" (in this case, it is
never necessary), to get a nice, short and permanent URL:

ion.txt>

which always works and will never expire.

Just a word of caution about generalizing.

Not all Yahoo Groups are set up with members-only Message Archives. GMF is proud
to be visible to anyone who is interested in content posted here: you are not
requird to be a Group member nor a Yahoo member to read messages posted here.

GMF also offers a public Links section that is available to any interested

If you're talking about the messages that you see on your group's front page
when you first visit your group, then you don't need to worry. Non-members don't
see any of those messages that you see. Only members see them.

There are a couple members who do have their addresses hidden. BUT, then they can't post to the group.
When we moderate a post, we delete who sent it. When we get the post, it always says its from NOBODY. Yahoo puts that in there, we don't.
What I can do is forward a post to you as I get it. Then I'll have Geri go on daily digest & have her forward it to me & I'll send you that one. Just don't approve them to go to this group! Then you'll see what I mean. I'm not real good at trying to explain some things.
Anyway, our goal is to just hide everyone's address from possible spammers, etc. I mean, I've been in groups where one member didn't like what another member posted & actually wrote nasty letters to that person's address. We don't live that drama crap. Its not a social group! Its only for sending or getting funny stuff. But we don't like OUR addresses showing either.
Heck, I'll just forward the examples to here so you can all (mods) see what I mean.

[Mod Note: Forward to GroupManagersForum-owner@yahoogroups.com, or
to Shal's personal email, not to the group.

Members who hide their address /can/ post to the group (witness the
many that post here in GMF), but they must do so through the group's
 web pages.]

When a member opts to hide their email address (in a group that allows it) their email address is /completely/ hidden -- not available in even to the group owners. A consequence is that the member must post from the Group's "Post" link, in the left column, they may not post by email.

There is also a consequence to the group: the option is irreversible and it disables the Poll feature. But if you don't need polls in your group that's of little consequence.

Let's not forget that Yahoo as promised to make polls available to even those
groups that allow hiding email addresses, and it's supposed to be done this
year. :-)

I don't believe their going to do that, at least not this year, considering all
the problems they've had with other things, but that would be nice.

But for now, I would consider it as Shal said, irreversible.

Thanks Shal,

That's a good idea, but I've already checked that and no messages are bouncing
or pending...not for me or anyone. They just aren't being sent sometimes, and
there's no apparent rhyme or reason for it.

Steve

[Mod note: Can't recall seeing anyone mention this. Be sure you check
your email service's spam or bulk folder for the missing messages.
Also check the filter settings to see if spam is deleted instead of
moved to a spam-trapping folder. If retrieving via client, you may
need to look at the web-based email to see spam folder content (e.g.
Gmail's service, or ISPs like Charter, Cox and so on).]

Steve: Followed up with Customer Care, and they have been replying to your
contacts. But my guess is that the same thing that is happening to some of the
messages from your group is happening to the Customer Care emails: your ISP is
bouncing them.

Remember that everyone can check their bounce history here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/member/preferences/communication/bounce_history?email=PU\
T_YOUR_EMAIL_ADDRESS_HERE

Meanwhile, given the way our system is architected, here is a good rule of thumb
to keep in mind if you're not getting messages:
- If the problem is affecting every member of the group (i.e. the messages are
making it into the archive but no one is receiving them via emai), then the
problem is almost certainly on our end.
- On the other hand, if it's only you who is not getting the messages (or just
you and a few other group members), the problem is almost certainly your ISP
bouncing the messages (or spam filtering or just dropping them). In this
situation, your best bet is to start with your ISP or mail client's Customer
Support.

I type in Italian for the word I'm looking for in my group, but nothing shows
up. I have an Italian Group. How can I get this feature to work? Did I shut it
off?

Hi,

I would like to collect various contact details from my group members
and share them with other moderators, and instead of plain database, I
would like to use applications, as they have more form-creating options.
Therefore I choose Address book and adjusted it (created some extra
fields etc.).

As I have to do some math operations on the fields (count and sum), I
need to export that address book from time to time (it would be nice if
it's possible to sum in the application).

Also, for backup purposes, I would like to save data from time to time.
However, I don't see any option to export data (table).

Am I missing something or it's like that by design?

In database I can export data, but I cannot add several phone numbers in
a single record (apps form have a + feature so user can add extra fields
for extra data)

Any idea?
Nik
