Google does their own thing. However, what you are looking for is
called "autocomplete". A search for "jquery autocomplete" should bring
up some decent results but you won't find anything as fancy as what
Google does. It is essentially an iframe overlay carefully positioned
and sized below the input text field.

'Firebug' and 'Live HTTP Headers' are the two tools you will need to
watch what happens in Google search.

hello.

I've found a few good examples of AJAX tutorials. (& have created 1
working AJAX script so far)..

a few good ones are here :-
http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/#search_as_user_types

THOUGH - a few queries

1)

I know when you go to http://www.google.com, that uses Ajax to give
"suggestions" on what you type in..

EG suggested words/phrases get listed below the search box.

Query :- has anyone found an example of that code ?

2) in the above playground examples, I cannot see where the script
actually calls the script that does the search (I'll design the search
script in PHP...)

Does anyone know how it calls the php (or other) script ?

I'll check again tomorow night - Goodnight...

Favicons are cached by most browsers. Firefox, for instance, will look
for a new favicon when a link is visited and the page is fully loaded
and only update the cached icon if it has changed. I don't know how IE
handles favicons, but caching in IE tends to be more aggressive.

Hello.

it there any htaccess commands that I can use to REMOVE any ico /
favicon imagews from a directory (& sub directories)

Basically, a few days ago, I created a subdomain for a website, & all
the html code looks fine etc...

there is NO inage of the favicon in the browser when looking at the subdomain.

But - when I look at the SAME site, using the new domain name, it has
my favicon..

Ive checked each directory - Upwards, to the root directory, no ico file

Ive checked the HEAD area of the HTMl output, & no ico file.

ive checked my css file - No references to ICO file or anything..

I'll talk with the server admins now -

QUERY :- are favicons cach'ed ? the domain name DID point to my
existing site when I came home & that has my favicon.

i've now been online & pointed the domain to the correct directory....

Thankyou Nigel / Michael for an easy way to know when to use class / ID .

I've markled this thread as 'starred' - easy reference - I'll go &
look on my page & see whether I need it multiple times or not..

I wonder why online tutorials can't be written so easily - They answer
everything except the most basic questions that people NEED to know :)

Hi Gordon,
As I understand it, an ID was originally intended so you can jump to a certain
place in your page.

Example:-
<a href="#heading">Skip Navigation</a>

<h1 id="heading">Main Content Heading</h1>

That's why you cannot have more than one in a page, as it wouldn't know which
one to go to. It can be styled just the same as a Class. It seems now to have
been adopted for use as styling just like a Class.

I Class can't be jumped to, so that's the one that can have multiple references
to it.

You can also use both (and multiple classes) in the same tag.
<div id="column" class="centered large justified">
I sometimes use this to temporarily test sections, where I already have classes
created for other things.

But, unless you are jumping to the middle of a page (or using JavaScript for
something), there is no advantage to use IDs, except that ID is 3 characters
less than CLASS (grin).

Use all Classes if you're unsure.
Regards, Bob E.

You're right.
I got confused somewhere between book and keyboard.

# is id and can be used only once per page
. is class and can be used multiple times

I think you have those reversed....

<div id="part1"></div> is styled with #part1 in the css.
<div class="part1"></div> is styled with .part1 in the css.

id can be used only once per page. class may be used as many times in the page
as you wish.

So, if you put the following in your css....

.blue {color: blue;}

Anything on the page that you put the class="blue" attribute on will be styled
with the color blue.

<p class="blue">
<h1 class="blue">
<li class="blue">

All three of those will result in the included text being blue.

.name1 goes with <div id="name1">
<div id="name1"> can be used multiple times within a page.
id is used to give each element on the page a unique name and is required if
accessing elements with javascript.

#name1 goes with <div class="name1">
<div class="name1"> can only be used ONCE within any page.

Otherwise, they appear to be interchangable.

Hello..

I've got a named div (table layout), which I want a certain colour
(borders) or no borders at all..

However, It is extracting the settings used for the other areas of the
page, & not the specific settings for the div..

Can anyone advise how to use stylesheets for a specific area (& not
for the whole page)...

Ie.

==================
div id='name1'

(content)

/div
================

and in the sylesheet, do we use

#name1 (whatever)

.name1 (whatever)

or without the # or dot

name1 (whatever)

????

thankyou...

Hi

is there a very easy tutorial on WHEN / WHERE to use

.word { blah}

or

#word {blah}

in stylesheets

also What is an ID / CLASS

I'm googling - but cannot find any tutorial to tell me which one is
which & where to use it. (in external stylesheets please)

All i want is a header text to be 200% regular size font - & color red
(just an example) - but ive been trying to do it for 1-2 hours :(

Ive got 2-3 examples on my page - Sometimes it changes color, but the
font doesn't change.. Sometimes the font changes & the color is
wrong...

Thankyou.

Didn't work with Avant for me, it went to the top of the page.
It worked with Ocra which seems to be the same browser as Avant bar the name.

Thanks Nigel,

I usually test with IE7 and Firefox because they have most of the
market. That will not work on my machine with those browsers.

It does work with Safari, Opera, Avant and Google Chrome. Where do I
look next for an answer to my problem?

Yes, I kept answering them to see what they would do.

Even telling them I'd get back to them in a week. When I didn't
(after posting a note on the web and here regarding the
situation), they did email me back.

I asked them how much it would cost and they said $86

I wrote them back telling them not to email me again, and they
didn't'.

They are very polite, in their email, much more so that you'd
ever find in any domain name company :)

Hi,
After my previous post about Internet Keywords, I've just received this
message:-

Dear Bob ,

Sorry but these domain names had been kept for you company for several days, and
I wonder if you have made a decision, if you consider them important to your
company and need to protect them, then we will send you the application form and
finish the registration for you. If the domains and internet keyword are not
important to you, and there will be no bad effect on the internet, then we will
confirm their application and register to them. Please make a quick decision and
inform us. Thanks for your support and cooperation.

Look forward to you reply soon.

Best Regard, Lake Fan.

.

As I'm a bit evil, I'm wondering how I should reply to this, to keep this scam
going.

The last time I did this to a Nigerian scam, they theatened to shot me, as I'd
copied every email to my website, but they found it. I made them wait until 4.00
AM in the morning to meet me at the Dakar airport. I used the name Bob (Lucky)
Diamond.

I had to remove it eventually, as no-one could get on my site due to a DOS
attack. I still have it saved, if anyone wants to read it, but it gets a bit
naughty.

Any suggestions?

Regards, Bob (Lucky) Diamond.

command-line/terminal.

Mail server?
Mailing list software? (e.g. mailman)
YahooGroups? :P

Specific services exist for doing "e-mail campaigns" such as MailChimp.

It is a hoax.

Company is usually in China.

They are trying to get $86 or so from you

If you own the .com or . your country, you still own the best
property available.

Hello.

I've seen in the past, an internet process where if i am sending 10 x
emails to hotmail.com users, I only send ONE email from my server, &
when it arrives at hotmail, it 'expands' to send an individual email
to each of the 10 hotmail users (as an example)..

Not planning any spamming - But I remember it was a good process to use..

does anyone remember its name (of the process) and any URL to advise
how it works ?

Hi Thomas,
The Hong Kong company have just contacted me again, saying they are sorry to
disturb me, but do I want to buy the domain names and Internet Keyword, before
their client snaps them up. Typical high pressure selling!

As you say, it's a Chinese thing.
http://www.webnic.cc/ps_chineseinternetkeyword.html

But, I can see this may happen to the rest of the world in the future, as
companies are now looking for more ways to make money.

p.s. If you enter "circlecity" into Google (no spaces), my site comes up first,
so co.uk sites are worthwhile (big grin), but I take your point that .com will
normally come first.

Regards, Bob.

The only worthwhile domains are .com. Web browsers will automatically
attempt to figure out the domain name if the .com/.net/whatever is
missing. Typing 'google' will search for google.com first.

Speaking of Google, one would think keywords would be something you
would turn over to a search engine to handle. It would be considered
cheating if you were to type something into the address bar that would
normally be result #348,652 in a search engine and yet you are taken to
that site anyway.

Internet Keywords (more like a phrase) seems to mostly be a China thing.
You apparently have to install specialized software to get it to work
and the minimum purchase of an Internet Keyword is 10 years in length.

Isn't it though!

Thanks again for the extra set of eyes. I would have been at that all night

Hi Margaret,
Dreamweaver was revolutionary when it first came out, but it generates too
much code, including duplicate stuff in the stylesheet.

I heard that they deliberately released unorthorised copies in the early
days, to get Dreamweaver circulating. Then, everyone wanted it, and it was
expensive.

Glad you like hand coding. It's cheaper <big grin>
Regards, Bob E.
